  • Lake Charles is a city in southwest Louisiana. Downtown, the Mardi Gras Museum explores the history of the iconic festival through colorful costumes. The 1911 Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center features traveling exhibitions and local art. Nearby, the giant, centuries-old Sallier Oak tree stands on the grounds of the Imperial Calcasieu Museum, a visual arts center. The city also has several large casinos.

Most of my memories of Lake Charles was as a kid traveling from home in Baton Rouge in the 1960s to Port Arthur Tex, my mom's hometown. During that time we traveled a lot by Greyhound bus and the depot was located at the corner of Ryan and Broad Streets. It moved from there in the mid to late 1980s.

That building at 1:32 used to be the Greyhound bus station during the 1970s. And the building on the right at 2:02 used to be an underground shopping mall. The building on the left at 3:21 was the civic center. They had high graduations and concerts there. But the tall building is a bank.

I have an aunt who lives in Lake Charles. She left when the hurricane came. Whole way back home she was dreading seeing her house. As she turned onto her street it was just destroyed house after destroyed house until she got to hers. Not even a shingle was missing. Her house was perfectly fine.

I remember seeing a house that was in the path of a tornado, debris and destroyed houses everywhere. Except for one house. Somehow in the middle of the wreckage, that house wasn’t touched

Downtown needs a lot of work due to the hurricane, but the best part of lake Charles is definitely south lake Charles Ryan to Nelson rd.

2024 update that tall building is being imploded in a couple months. It received lots of glass damage. Owners wouldn’t repair and couldn’t sell. City made them put millions aside to demolish if need be that time has approached

@@MacGiollaCostigan I mean it’s a gamble if you buy a house here as far as hurricanes but the last time a major hurricane hit here was in 2005 so not very often. The city is ok but you get a lot for your money when you buy here.
