- Just some quick little tips and advice about how to make Micro Short Films, particularly focusing on the ONE MINUTE film.
I'm gonna assume that this is going to get a bit of attention next time Film Riot do their 'One Minute film' Challenge, and, fun fact, the first One Minute Film that I made was The Docks, which I did for a Film Riot competition! So that's fun!
I also made one of these for the Raindance horror short contest. If you're here doing research for entering either of those competitions, let me know!!

I am so freaking happy you are documenting your journey and sharing it with aspiring filmmakers. I feel so spoiled. Thank you truuuly
This really helps. I watched Milo, and I counted the amount of shots within the film. I counted 8 (not counting the ones that were used in a shot reverse shot format) it encouraged me and told me to think small and think simple and not overthink it. Thanks.
Glad to hear it was useful! Yeah, I always find my films go best when I think small and focused. 'Shot economy' is so important. Glad I could be of help!
I thought Milo was EXCELLENT! Thank you for sharing your imagination and creativity with us!
Thank you so much! It's always lovely hearing positive feedback like this from someone.
Never new the actual term was “micro short films,” so I learned something new immediately. I’ve been wanting to jump into filmmaking and micro short films is where I want to start so this was very insightful!
Glad to provide you with some new info! Hope it helped your journey into film.
Helpful!! Thanks loads
I have been trying for months to figure out what kind of films that I am making and this video made me figure out my style and also learn about how I can improve going forward. Thanks Matthew
No problem. Glad I could be of help. Keep on working and keep on improving! Onwards and upwards!
I really enjoyed this. Of course, I have to watch all of your films now (the ones I haven't already seen). 😊
Haha, well I hope you enjoyed them! There's a couple of duds in there, but in general I'm pretty proud!
Great information. Thanks so much for this!
No worries! Hope it was useful!
I could not agree more with you. Each short film is a lesson for the next. I am currently working on a short and have decided to invest in proper sound equipment. This is such an overlooked component of film making at the beginner level and yet a poor quality soundtrack can ruin an otherwise decent effort. I have learned a lot from you videos. Thank you.
I used your advice from this video to make a Micro short of my own-great advice!!! And I totally agree with everything you've said.
Some great points here Matthew! Thanks for the inspiration :-D
We actually made 2 micro short films a couple months ago with a buddy of ours from college! We love doing micro short films and definitely plan on doing more! thank you so much for making this video, there was a lot of helpful tips!
No worries at all! I hope your next films benefit from them!

Your the best Sir.
I’ve been wanting to make micro shorts for a while
Well hopefully some of the stuff here is helpful for when you start!
Really great tips. I'd love to have you expand on the "small scale" a bit more. How do you scale it down and still have it be a complete story? You're able to do it under a minute where others shoot for hours and say far less. Can you give some examples or formula for coming up with micro stories/scripts? Asking for a friend :)
Ooh, that's an interesting question! I guess the closest thing I can give to a formula is:
1) Where are we and who are we with?
2) What changes?
3) What is revealed?
If it goes through all of those beats it usually works for me. There's a few other things I try to keep in mind too, like thinking about having entire characters that are only vaguely alluded that exist entirely offscreen to make the world feel bigger (Milo in For Milo and the victim in The Docks for example). But yeah. I'll have a think and see if I can come up with more! Then who knows, maybe I'll make a whole 'nother video about it!
Great tips! Thank you
No worries! Hope they help!!
Good 🔥🔥
Thank you! Really appreciate this Matthew!
Glad you liked it! Hopefully it all helps with anything you make in the future!
This is great material
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Hey cool video. Micro shorts seem like a great idea for learning the basics over time. I actually have a short horror video on my channel, its no budget and I made it at work without permission. It was fun to do too!
