A day in the life of a monk. But mostly about Thanksgiving and Gratitude for the Beauty of Orthodoxy

  • The typical day in a monk's life is in fact a false topic in Orthodoxy, because there is no such thing as a 'typical' monastic or a 'typical' monastery. All Orthodox monasteries are built starting from the guidance of the same common tradition, we use the same services, we have the same vision - and yet, each monastery (and each monastic in every monastery) is unique in its personal character.

Dear Chris, I have always loved rain and clouds - even as a child and a teenager, because of my migraines, I never liked the sun and intense light. My spiritual father calls me a spiritual mushroom for that reason 😊

Want to thank the Holy Orthodox Church to bring me back to the Philokalia. To the Saints. To the churchfathers.
It is a blessing for me, growing up in Protestant household. Could not make any sense of Christian believe, to meet my absolute dear brothers of Christ. In my heart i put you to my heart and cry. May our Lord bless you a 1000 fold.

@@mullmonastery Thank you so much. It is pure GRACE to find this beautifull rich church. Every day is like walking in a fairytale. In this utter dark world i found the SAINTS. Just like when you fall in love with someone, you can not help it, everything change. It was not me, but the Grace of God who found me and lead me back to our Lord and Saviour. To the TRUE LIVING FATHERS and MOTHERS of this HOLY HOLY CHURCH the body of CHRIST. Amen.

    Greetings Brother
Like the multitude of grapes growing on the vine, each one of us is an individual surviving or thriving differently depending on where one is located in the orchard. The same sun, rain, & intertwining vines sustain all. Separate yet connected. Some grapes feed the birds in the sky, while some are chosen with others to produce something special to quench the inner thirst & sooth souls. Thank you Brother for your positive Spirit. Wish you Blessings on your journey & your endeavors. :)

Most people in the USA do not realize how far north the Isle of Mull is. So they do not realize how little sun shine there is in the middle of winter. Good talk on explaining your typicon as you are developing a monastic life there. I hope this talk opens many people's minds on the traditions and how a monk changes in positions and aging. Love you.

Hello Father Seraphim, your prayers. What I would like to ask is whether monasticism is something that we are all called to (or are able to do) or if it is a gift from God that is only given to some people and only they can succeed in. As an 18 year old I have been thinking a lot about monasticism lately, but I fear that my sins and weaknesses would not allow me to persevere through the war the devil would start against me if I did decide to go. May our Panagia watch over your blessed monastery.

Thank you, beloved Father for all your teachings! I stayed all my life away from Christ and our Church because I felt like I was killed by the rigidity of what I was taught at home about our faith. Exactly like you gracefully explained, I thought I just don't fit so instead I fit in a life of sin, which at least was "freedom". I later saw what a lie that was and what a fallen human I am, but I now see how much damage this rigid thinking, which I later also had, can do. I hope your message heals everyone who hears it. My spiritual father here in Romania also teaches me in the same spirit like the one you are speaking into. May God keep you with us for many, many years to come!

Oh Father! I am grateful for your words!
I have a connection to the Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne West Virginia and I am so interested in this topic. I am building my own rule with difficulty as I grow older and more feeble. My spiritual father is Father Michael. I also rely on the holy prayers of our Sisterhood at my church. It’s serious now, as I get closer to death. Acceptance of what I cannot do is so hard. Oh yes, the prayer rule is the answer. Again I thank you.

If I may: I think some of those who ask you to show or discuss the day in the life at Mull Monastery are asking in good faith: they just want a glimpse into how you do it there, knowing that not all communities are the exact same but they just want to see and learn as they may have never been to a monastery. But the negative, critical, fault finding attitude is very sad, so I understand you wanting to not subject yourselves to that kind of un Christian scrutiny. Thank you so much for this ministry. You have such a balanced and clear understanding of things. God bless you.

I appreciate greatly your kindness and sense of Christ when you are helping us all to "get better " as we practice our understanding of the Gospel and try better to be who we truly are. As I walk my own unique path of faith, I have learnt much of spiritual value from your monastery and also from Fr. CHRIS Alar who is in Stockbridge America. He received his calling and speaks up for the Divine Mercy. I think your life is very holy and saintly yet I am following your teachings from my house in NW England and realise as I get older, the Lord knows how much I need my family, my cat and a sense of secure continuity. I think I love Jesus and Mary differently to how you love them, that not being wrong. I need to stop idolising. The quality of love needs to be fervent and not luke warm, for God is love and unconditionally so. I hope you keep receiving funding. Your efforts on Mull are unselfish and spiritually delightful, and worthwhile, so may God give you the spiritual and human strength to keep the monastery vision alive.

Dear Father, I'm thinking of converting to Orthodoxy. Truthfully, I don't really know much about Orthodoxy, but I feel an significant pull towards the Orthodox Church. I'm currently in a moderately charismatic Pentecostal church (ever since converting to Christianity a year and half ago), and it breaks my heart that something doesn't feel right about being there. I am so hungry for God. I am desperate for holy worship, confession and openness about my sin issues, and the fellowship of the Body of Christ. I want to pick up my cross and carry it. I don't think I'm getting what I need at my current church.

I forget the name, but in biology mushrooms have an extensive underground network that links them together as a huge organism that can extend for many square miles. You have linked the Celtic monastics to the Northern Thebaid and Sinai as well.

Thank you Father! You have no idea how much I needed to hear these words. I've been struggling with the practice of American Thanksgiving and the Nativity Fast. I don't judge anyone for participating, but as a convert, secular celebrations like this are WHY I sought out the church. I was a little surprised at how many new calendar bishops encourage participating in the gluttonous festivities. I know many will be upset that I've said this and I'm sorry, because I don't mean to offend. I just couldn't reconcile what seems to me to be putting a secular tradition before an ascetic discipline. But your idea of 'what gives you life may kill me and what gives me life may kill you' really kind of helped me to intellectually understand this, somehow. Pray for me that this understanding might move past my mind and into my heart ♥ 🙏 ☦
Edit : not judging the Bishops! I'm just a church lady and a convert. When I don't understand something, I've learned that it's usually a deficiency in me, not the thing I don't understand. 🙏

Father, thank you so much for sharing this message about diversity. I actually had just gone through this issue. After looking into the richness of the orthodox church, I started having struggles of what I should do. How do I pursue God? At the same time, my spituial companion is advising me with her way of pursuing God. She is very gifted and a lot of times can sense the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thus it really stresses me out while she tries to tell me what to do. I had to really look hard into myself. Maybe I was too prideful to take in advices. But do I take in all the advices from her? It was very difficult.
I have been praying to God about this issue and asked for His guidence. Last night God had answered me and actually granted me the freedom to make the decision for myself. In other words, I was not forced to pursue Him in any certain way. God is full of grace! And today this video certainly helps me comprehend the issue even more. Faith is afterall a personal journey. Everyone is different! Happy Thanksgiving!

Understandably this is a very difficult and troubling time for people of all faiths and areas of the world and I think we need comforting spiritually emotionally and also we must be able to speak of potentially difficult things in love because if God is truly love he will be able to get us through the discomfort of having open hard yet necessary conversations. Picking up on your comment about being all one, we are all one under Christ . . . I realized that “Roman Catholic” is an oxymoron. Rome is a particular place (“all roads lead to Rome”) and ‘catholic’ means ‘universal’. How can the Catholic Church be universal when its center is Rome, a particular place (unless we can find the universal in the particular)? (I am not criticizing Catholics, I am a Catholic myself.) Just a thought.

You record videos at 1 a.m., have to prepare the contents, answer countless emails, manage the monastery, maybe already have church service at 5 a.m. and so on and so forth. You have a proven and profound wisdom - and that also has to be worked out. Excuse my boldness. How do you do it? I'm already at the limit with my few tasks.

I read in the bible that my salvation is a free gift, I don't have to work for it. However, if I'm truly saved my faith will bear fruit. And so the good deeds and good works are a consequence and not a requirement to be saved. Jesus says 'come as you are'.
