    Hey everybody - I hope you're enjoying this video. :)
    The PSYCHOCANDY SUPERFUZZ pedal that you saw on the thumbnail and demonstrated in this video is a custom effect pedal. A clone that has the same circuit like the The Univox Superfuzz and the Shin-Ei Fuzz Wah (without the Wah).
    The only differences are:
    1.) the 'Color' poti (othe original used a "middy/scooped" tone switch)
    2.) the seasons switch "Spring/Summer/Winter/Fall"
    3.) the color switch (MId/Original/Cut)
    These are just subtile options to form the sound a bit more. But I didn't used these for the The Jesus And Mary Chain "Psychocandy" sound in his video. So a custom-made Univox Superfuzz clone (or any other high gain fuzz) + any Wah Wah pedal would the job for the fuzz sound.
    Thanks for watching!

      The fuzz on Psychocandy is indeed a Shin-Ei companion, BUT that is not identical to the Super Fuzz circuit. It gets pretty close but the Companion and Companion Fuzz Wah are somewhat different, a really unruly Fuzz that was not popular in it's time. Schematics are online.

    The room sound is the distance micing. A lot of the JAMC reverb sound is clever mic placement. It gives it a sense of not only space, but also distance, this is hard to mimic precisely with most reverb pedals because the default predelays are too long.

    I've been down this rabit hole for about 25 years. My go to amp is a Vox VT30 which I loaded up with a Jensen Mod 10 inch speaker. I got the JAMC tone with both my Danelectro Convertible and also my Gretsch Electromatic with TV Jones pickup. I would bounce around the hi gain amps with the reverb all the way up. It actually sounded convincing.
    The band actually played a Gretsch Country Gentleman and Gibson 330 with a Bigsby. When I saw them live they used a Gibson 330.
    The secret to the tone is to get the treble up right before it feeds back. You can use a Rat or a Big Muff but you are going to have to tweek knobs on the amp. I will point out I have several amps and I used to have several JAMC settings dialed into my Fender Cyber Twin back 20 years ago. Its more dialing the tone, using full hollowbody guitars and getting that fuzz.
    FYI the Gibson is a 330 (basically a Gibson version of the Casino) and Gretsch pickups nail the tone. You can play semi hollow and solid bodies but you will here that lack of air inside the body that the hollowbodies have. I will point out that guitars like a Epiphone Widkat or a Duesenberg will be a pain to get that tone. That is because they are more like a chambered solid body in terms of tone. You can get a similar tone like in the video with solidbodies however the sustain that is inherit in a solidbody will last longer than a hollow body. In a hollow body you have a decay that a humbucker solidbody won't have. A lofi old school type of pickup will sound more in line with what they were using. For the guitars that were not Gretsch or Gibson, the best I can tell you is that they were cheap import guitars with cheap pickups.

    I built a Shin Ei fuzz clone to get the JAMC sound, as it's such a distinctive tone. Particularly love the single Some Candy Talking as well as the Barbed Wire Kisses compilation that I liked even better than their "proper" albums. Live they were very variable though - first time I saw them they played less than twenty minutes, and last time I saw them the distortion and volume levels rendered every song unrecognisable as anything but a wall of noise.

  • @latontolog
    @latontolog 3 года назад +12

    Great video as always! I'm a bit of a Mary Chain obsessive and my bands have all been super influenced by them, so I've also spent a lot of time researching how to get that sound. (I'd actually been thinking about making a video like this myself, but it wouldn't have been nearly as good.) I think you nailed it! :)
    Just some small thoughts:
    (1) I can definitely hear spring reverb from the amp on some of the guitars on "Psychocandy", but some of them sound rather like they have some kind of plate reverb on them (they don't have the same splashy tail that you'd get from a spring reverb). I believe they (or the engineer, John Loder) were using digital reverb processors for the vocals, probably Lexicon units, and they might have used that for some of the guitars as well. I think the room setting on the Empress reverb that you use sounds really good and quite close to that sound. Personally I think the spring and plate reverb algoritms in the Digitech RV7/Supernatural/Polara are fantastic for the Psychocandy sound (which would make sense considering that they're based on Lexicon algoritms).
    (2) I've wondered for quite a long time how the guitar sound on "Psychocandy" could be what it is given that, as far as I know, William at this time used exclusively guitars with humbuckers, together with the Shin-Ei fuzz. I've owned a couple of semi-hollow guitars with humbuckers, and when I put them through a Superfuzz style fuzz the sound tends to get very boomy and lack any kind of definition whatsoever, but that's not quite what you hear on "Psychocandy". Maybe it's just a matter of the humbuckers on their guitars being of a higher quality than the ones I'm using, but I'd be curious to know what the explanation is. :p Later during their career, William started using a Gibson ES-330 as his main guitar for live performances (that's what you've got pictured at 7:18 in the video), which has P90 pickups, and that would be a bit brighter and more defined sounding than an ES-335. But I don't think he's been seen with a ES-330 during the "Psychocandy" era. Anyway, personally I use a Mascis Jazzmaster (with single coil pickups) with my Superfuzz and it sounds great -- I also thought the humbucker on the Jaguar you used sounded clear and defined and good with the fuzz, and quite similar to the album.
    (3) My biggest complaint about the video.. obviously you have to use specifically Wayfarer sunglasses for the right tone, this was a very basic mistake to make! :p

    • @latontolog
      @latontolog 3 года назад +2

      @Sasha Nørskov I've heard people say before that William used an FY-2 on the album so that might well be true. :) But there's definitely an FY-6 (fuzz/wah) on much of it, and you can see William using one of those in pictures and videos from this time (as well as during the recent reunion). But yeah, maybe there's some production stuff involved as well. Might be something as simple as putting an EQ before the guitar goes into the fuzz. :)

    • @latontolog
      @latontolog 3 года назад +1

      @Sasha Nørskov Yeah, sorry, I had a brainfart, I meant the 8Tr. I own one, find the wah kinda weak but the fuzz is obviously to die for.

    You should make these pedals and sell them, you nailed it very nicely. You would only need to remove the image of William and the word Psycho to avoid any legal issues. I think you would sell hundreds of these if not more. I would buy one myself for sure. I can get close to this sound with my Behringer Ultra Fuzz but this pedal just looks and sounds so amazingly cool

    Love the vid, as always. But I've now almost become sad Shoegaze is a genre. There were a bunch of people in Europe making unique guitar sounds, and then instead of continuing to make unique tones, we made a genre of imitating a few of theirs.

      I mean I get what you're saying, and I think you're partly right, but that's the way any genre or musical movement typically goes, isn't it? Most bands will be fairly derivative and formulaic, and then there'll be a small minority of bands pushing the genre forward and doing different things. I think contemporary shoegaze is in a fairly healthy place.

    There is a great book "Behind the Glass" where (actual) producers/engineers talk about how how some of the most iconic albums were recorded. They're all anecdotes and they're not all great. Some are technical and some stories are "rockstar fodder". The long and short-take away of it is, there are sounds from certain instruments, that sound like hot garbage when you "solo" them....but sound amazing in context, with the other bits. To "tie this into your video", a lot of shoe gaze guitar tracks sound like pure ass if "solo'd", but cut through a mix and work with the song.
    Some of the sounds on this vid sound terrible...alone. BUT...in the mix...great. Just my 2 cents.
