@4:45 incorrect, prospector has 4 bags 8 SCU each = 32 SCU total Mole has 12 bags 8 SCU each = 96 SCU these bags are the same size.
~@7:20 Mole and prospector both come stock equipped with 3 sets of bags, and as once fills the next becomes available once you drop the first bag. But another unknown like you said TBD how re-equipping bags will work. It appears the Expanse has a tractor beam mid-top center, so it likely could re-equip the bags and recycle any bags it pulls off the ships its servicing.
@10:00 yes, probably won't be able to refine quant, because quant is assumedly a liquid - but it may not be, for all we know its like uranium and its powderized and consumed who knows. But even if it is a liquid, mole and prospector can still mine it because when mined its clearly a non-liquid material during the mining process, its only during refining that you would be unable to process it, were the finished product to be a liquid.
What is probable is that the mole may out mine the processing capability of the Expanse (if fully crewed), But processing speed is a critical piece to the puzzle we don't yet know. Too much theory crafting till we know more, but its clear the bags are the same across mole/prospector.
This is exactly the comment I came to post lol thank you.
Your last point is the most important. The MOLE will be filling up fast, I have a feeling you will need a better refining ship to make it work or multiple expanses.
the mole only has 8 bags
@@johnpreece8180 The MOLE has 96 max SCU, 8 bags active at any point in time, but also has 16 backup bags once the first set is filled up. Total of 24 bags, but again only 8 active at any time.
@@ufoconc yes 8 active means 12 scu per bag i think you said 12 bags earlier in your comment
@@johnpreece8180 that was the original comment :) not mine
BRING ON THE Q&A! Really looking forward to the Expanse. I don't mind mining, but I LOVE working support roles. Just hanging out with my mining buddies offering valuable services sounds like my kind of fun!
As someone who didn't see the announcement, i was very confused for a while with what they were talking about. "The Expanse" sounded either like a tv series or like it would be a system/area in the game. strange name for a ship.
I don’t really see the incompatibility with the Mole. The Expanse is a one man ship add a second to double your fleets refinery output.
Here’s another little gem I noticed. Anyone remember the recent change of the Hull A’s cargo capacity? It just so happens that the Hull A can carry the exact amount of SCU that an Expanse can eject when fully laden.
Think about it. In a game with a low player per server cap you could conceivably have a highly effective and profitable 3 to 4 player fleet parked in an asteroid field for very long mining sessions with just a Hull A making routine trips back and forth to drop off refined goods and possibly return with bags.
As to the speculation about whether it can refine Quantanium. Right now in game when you refine Quantanium it isn’t immediately refined into fuel. I have a sneaking suspicion that’s intentional. I think that Quantanium ore will require more than one process to go from the raw state to fuel for ships.
CIG has stated that ship is supposed to be a general refinery. Think about this what if the Expanse can refine Quantanium into its refined solid ore state but it requires the Starfairer to make it into fuel. The Star fairer has two refinery pods on the back of it. Without an expanse present it has to do two refinery steps to get to quantum fuel but with an expanse present it could double up on the second process and double its efficiency.
There seems to be a lot of synergies developing between the MISC ships.
CIG always touted the Hull B specifically as the partner to the Prospector.
I hope the next level refiner ship can hold a Prospector!
The Orion is a refinery
I don’t necessarily think it is locked to the Prospector. I think the tractor at the back could take the back inside, but I tend to think the tractor holds the bags in place while the vacuum transfers the ore into the refinery and the refined ore is transferred into the bags on the side.
Like Tecton says it doesn’t make sense to force your opposition to go else where. Encourage them to use your refinery ships (Expanse and Starfarer).
I expect another refinery ship. I do t think it would need to be tied to the Mole, mainly because I suspect the Expanse to be able to service both the Prospector/ Mole and any other mining ship/ Vehicle.
I'll go along with what others said about the Mole and Prospector having the same Bags, for the sake of not making the whole loop more obnoxious than it already is.
However, the whole intended gameplay just doesn't click with me. Throwing Bags from one ship to another in space just seems plain weird.
More importantly tough, I feel like it would get outscaled to obsolescence by the Orion which combines mining and refining on a massive scale.
As some baseless optimism, I'd assume a Expanse could handle multiple Prospectors or a Mole and comes with multiple sets of Bags, so you could work with a transport ship which holds the bags of refined ore.
So, the loop would be like:
Miner mines stuff -> drops bags off near the Refiner -> Refiner drops refined stuff bags for the transporter -> Transporter hauls them off to sell.
You'd then also need escorts in at least 2 places (Miner+Refiner and Transporter). So you'd look at a "efficient" setup of 3 Prospectors or 1 Mole + 1 Expanse + 1 Transport + 2 Escorts. Using minimum crew, that's 7 Crew.
On a Orion, you'd have enough capacity to not rely on transport/transfer with another ship to the point that a "bare bones" setup would just be a Orion and Escorts and could team up with others with no real drawbacks.
Am thinking you put a refinery ship like the Expanse on a carrier style ship (890J external hangar platform): drop off your saddlebags and have someone queue up the refining... You'll have plenty of storage on board the carrier until a transport is ready. Park just off the main quantum jump lanes and folks in party can jump to you instead of dangerous station.
There's also a missing rig construction ship, maybe an Argo or CONU. It would fit perfectly in with liquid mining
The bags on the MOLE are completely identical. It even says MISC on the MOLE's bags. The MOLE just has eight usable at a time.
And they're 12 scu. It'd feel arbitrary for this ship not to be able to handle them.
💯 agree the mole just has more bags.
Go look into it the prospectors bags are 8 scu the moles are 12scu. The ship can take both bags, it just can only put the refined material back out in the prospector sized ones. Again this is the most current info we have, it can all change again. Exe
@@inforunners thanks, I had missed the change. If I remember correctly, it’s a bit like the Aurora. Once upon a time Auroras and mustang alpha had had the ability to take a small cargo container while the CL had the store all big box included. When CIG reworked the Aurora/Mustang the Mustang alpha and Clipper were modified so that they carried more cargo and could carry the store all mini. While the rest of the Auroras had their cargo reduced.
At times it really does seem to be a matter of wait and see. Things change all the time for a multitude of reasons b
You just can't trust Jon when it comes to mining. That'll man will make you accidentally rich.
thanks father tomato for saying i am not trustworthy :) hope you enjoying your holiday :)
The idea of this ship / profession is appealing to me. I worry about CIG's pricing plans though. I don't see this profession "starter" sells for less than $250. The Starliner was $400 primarily because it would be able to come right out of the gate and make good money without the need to invest anything further. The Expanse also fits that description, so the price may be quite a bit higher than $250.
we'll get another refinery, and they'll have specialized gas ships, but they may decide to allow a less efficient way to mine them. Having a gas scoop that replaces the mining arm, instead of bags you get hard tanks. that way the prospector can be a true "intro" mining ship. The expanse could have a similar setup forcing the pilot to pick the reactors that better fit his refining needs.
The Expanse could be an excellent opportunity for users, or a bust. There is far too little information on this ship to be able to make any evaluations. We don't know: 1. How much it costs to refine a batch. 2. How long it takes to refine a batch. 3. What options there are to refine a batch. 4. What the capacity of refining a batch will be. 5. What range of materials it will be able to refine. 6. As a one man operation does the ship have the capability to refine unattended or does it take some sort of attendance to be able to refine so that it cannot travel as it refines.
I reckon they may leave it locked to the prospector, and wait for a larger sized refinery ship to work with the mole
edit: As in I think the expanse may be an entry-level refinery ship, then they'll release a mid-tier refinery and an end game refinery
edit edit: I quite like the new transitions when changing screens, not sure if you guys have used it before but this is the first time I've noticed it
Luckily the Q+A cleared up that it’s universal and can take bags from any mining ship.
MISC Caldera - Its molten and occasionally Eurpts! :D
BTW, love these semi-speculation vids
I think Argo is gonna have a larger refinery ship for its bags
I wonder if we get some kind of chemicals we need to prep up on for refining different ores. So you'll need to plan out on what to refine and not just "run" on the ore alone. Maybe you can even mine for those substances and build a stock pile or crafting later on will involve that. That would also solve the quantanium timer issue. Some kind of agent you treat the quantanium during the refining to stop make it volatile until the refining is done.
Also I don't think there is as much space in the ship as you think. I think in the bottom deck there is just the elevator room and in the second floor just the cockpit, living room and small refining room. Rest is probably just refinery/storage/reactors. Viewable through the window in the small refining room.
I mean sure "gameplay" yeahhhhh. But more complexity. Bringing the need for better comms more organizers too. Really it lends to how Org heavy this game might vs the Freelancer type player. Yes many puns in this 🔥 take.
Vulture will zip this to the cubes with the cargo. Profit.
Is salvage going to require refinement? If so will this be able to refine salvage too?
Hope they'll give us loaner expanse with the mole for the orion
It all sounds logical. There is just one thing that bothers me: quantanium is mined in a solid state as a mineral, and refined its a liquid? I have seen nothing that indicates that. Even refined quantanium seems to be still solid. Back when you saw the boxes in your cargohold it said mineral, and when you sell refined quantanium at the TDD terminal it said mineral.
Plus refined quantanium is doublingvin price, while quantum fuel is cheap (as needs to be, to make space travel an everyday thing). So i guess the step to turn quantanium into fuel is a process of fuel refining where you use little quantanium and much more of another ingredient (possible hydrogen) to refine quantanium into quantum fuel.
6 processors with 8 bags. Curious if the two additional bags are for waste.
I like the ship and i think the bags storage will adjust to hold both, but hate the name for it. I feel like the name it doesn't fit the ship.
Do you think the expanse can fit inside the hanger bay of the endeavor ???
Appears it maybe Medium and the Cutlass is medium as is the Apollo, so at this stage I would say yes. As long as it is infact medium. Exe
Also, the "Expanse" should be changed to the "Kiln"
I was thinkig more "Shake & Bake". Exe
Argo Raft of mining gameplay loop?
First comment 2nd like
Worst ship idea EVER!. Refining on site is such a good idea, we actually do it all the time irl....NOT. You move the raw material to a secure site.
Now imagine you are a pirate and instead of chasing tradeships..you now get a "loot pinata" that barely moves..litteral sitting duck.
