  • Many celebrate Diwali by lighting candles and diva lamps. Families come together to remember and reflect upon Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (sixth Sikh Guru) who was imprisoned by the Mughal Empire. Whilst in prison, Guru Ji inspired and changed the lives of 52 kings who were wrongly imprisoned. Guru Ji saved the 52 kings by only agreeing to leave the prison if the 52 kings were also released. After this, the Guru was known as 'Bandi Chorr' - The Liberator.
Now the question is, do we call it Diwali or Bandi Chhor Divas?
Well, here are 7 facts that you probably did not know about the Sikh Diwali!
    00:00 Introduction
00:42 Fact 1. Guru Sahib wanted to go to prison!
01:09 Fact 2. The chief prison guard was a Sikh of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji - Bhai Hardas Ji.
01:37 Fact 3. There was an assassination attempt on the Guru whilst they were in prison.
02:08 Fact 4. Guru Ka Langar was provided during the Guru’s stay in prison.
03:17 Fact 5. The origins of the 'Nagar Kirtan' date back to the time that the Guru stayed in prison.
04:27 Fact 6. The famous Chola Sahib (robe) that Guru Sahib wore only had 50 tassels, not 52!
04:57 Fact 7. Do Sikhs celebrate Diwali or Bandi Chorr Diwas?
    08:17 Recap!
Watch the beautifully animated Sakhi (true story) on why Sikhs celebrate Diwali.

There is a handwritten hukamnama from Guru Gobind Singh Ji that asks the Sangat to celebrate “Divali”, showing its usage by the Gurus themselves. There are also hukamnamas from the 3rd, 6th, and 10th Gurus, Panth Parkash, and Daya Singh’s Rehitnama.

Diwali is also important cause it's the second day after harvesting the crops and on this day the farmers used to thank the god for the good cultivation and start using that crop by first donating it to the poor.

@Nihaal Akal Singh Khalsa sorry mate asking me to remove my country's flag is like asking a Sikh to remove his turban, we both know no genocide happened against Sikhs by India rather unfortunately it was under Indira Gandhi's tyranny violent assault took place to achieve political goals which majority of Hindu community condemn including our current PM and all the Indic religions(other than Islam and Christianity) respects the warrior breed of India that is our Sikh brothers and sisters and India is the birthplace of Sikhism and if anything happens to any Sikh around the world just be remember, all the people of India who follows the Indic religion that is Hindu, Sikh, Buddhism and Jain (excluding people who are brainwashed by the radical left which does not respect Indic religions) are ready to stand in solidarity with our Sikh brothers and Sisters.
E.g India under PM Modi saved hundreds of Sikhs who happens to be living in Afghanistan but getting persecuted by Islamic fundamentalist under the Taliban. So let's just respect each other, otherwise, there are many communities and a religion that does not want any Sikh to be alive. If we Indic religion doesn't support and cherish each other no one else could do it. You can check this fact from our history.
      Regards.
      Your Hindu brother.

The main reason Deepawali is celebrated is because Bhagwan Ram came back from banwas. Guru sahib ji was also came out from prison with fifty two kings on Deepawali so it is also called Bandi Chor. In my area Sikhs go to Mandir and Hindus go to Gurudwaras on Deepawali . We should celebrate together and don't let people divide us. Deepawali is one festival which brings Hindus and sikhs together and shows our closeness. Happy Deepawali and bandi Chor. You should be worried about the biggest challenge facing sikhs and Hindus which is from Christian missionaries who are using money emotional blackmail brainwashing and dirty tricks in order to convert sikhs.

There is no evidence, either historical or archaeological, of the existence of Ram or Sita etc. Just because it was referred to as divali in some texts, doesn't mean it should continue that way. Logically it would make no sense. Call the festival what you think would make Guru Hargobind Singh ji would want.

Diwali is Diwali. Everyone can celebrate it. It just so happens that Guru hargovid rai’s release with all kings was a gesture because of Diwali-kind of like mass pardon by then king to earn some goodwill(logical deduction not from any book). So calling Diwali as BCD is a political separatist thinking only prevalent outside India.

I have some queries. What was celebrated in Punjab before bandi chorr Diwas ?
Did Punjabis celebrate Diwali ? Punjab had a great Hindu population so I believe they did.
Also the fact that the current land of Punjab is the same land where Luv and Kush ruled so people would be celebrating Diwali I believe.
I have heard that in Dasham Granth, Guru Gobind Singh ji has mentioned Ramayana and has explained the surname Sodhi as derived from Saundhi, the descendants of Luv and terms the clan Shatriya (Khatri in Punjabi).
Please do correct me because this all information I have gathered is from different youtube vidoes on Sikhi and not my personal research.

One simple question. After conversion did punjabi suddenly stop celebrating diwali because guru nanak dev didn't convert anyone, the all he need that no buddy was following the wrong people's (pandas) who misleading them.
Modern Sikh didn't believe in hindu panchaag, they celebrate guru nanak dev ji birthday on their original date but suddenly they start celebrating bandi choodh diwas on a hindu panchaang date.
Sikh is always celebrate diwali but these all guys are misleading them with these events, and change the motive of celebration

I adore ur channel n love every video of beloved Jugraj singh ji. But unfortunately I am disappointed today. As per ur logic Guru Sahib came to Sri Darbar Sahib after being released from the captivity along with 52 kings. If we take various historical sources n perspectives into considerations, Guru Sahib didn't visited Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar exactly after being released. It was the month of February when Guru Sahib visited Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar. By that logic we should perform deepmaala in the month of February n not on the day of diwali. V respect every religion n there is no one as tolerant as a sikh, having said so we have our own principles n beliefs n linking Bandi Chorh Diwas with diwali is not justified at all. We respect diwali n love our hindu brethren. U r an icon n should spread right knowledge for our generations.

Hi, If we say Dewali, are we not sending a skewed message to those who inquire? Most people in the West know Dewali is a Hindu celebration. People who ask will not know that there is a difference. Its like saying Christmas can be used to describe Hanukah and vice versa, one is a Christian holy day and the other a Jewish holy day. It is confusing to call both totally different events/celebrations by the Hindu holy day name that has absolutely no relationship to why Sikhs celebrate this day as well. Its very confusing , in my opinion Sikhs should call it by its own name for many reasons, one being that we should not have use Hindu holy day names to describe our celebrations, furthermore, If we use our own names for our holidays, people all over the world would know what Sikhism is and not confuse it as branch or same as Hinduism. Should we continue on this path Sikhi will die off by blending into the tapestry of an already established, and well know theological entity such as Hinduism. Would our Muslim brothers stand to call a holiday like Ramadan, Easter for Muslims...I do not think so.
