KoTOR was about 4000BBY they may not have had that kind of tech like they did for Luke. Seemed like a pretty new development if you even just compare it to Anakin's golden prosthetic arm. In any case it looks pretty narly and definitely scares the officer.
Lightsabers cauterize the wounds they inflict, making reattaching limbs and similar healing impossible. A reason i believe the prosthetics still work on limbs is because you could remove the cauterized flesh at the end of a damaged limb. Then the prosthetic can attach to the living tissue and everything to properly work as the person's limb (star wars prosthetics are linked to the user's nervous system, as evident by the control and range of motion). With the jaw injury you'd be looking at a total face reconstruction. Probably with a higher risk of death, a risk of it not working, and the loss of even more of his face in the process. With how close the damage is to his nose, ears and throat it would've probably been a MASSIVE project. So to put it simply i don't think it was an option. Not because the technology was so inferior, but because the procedure was completely impossible. I do think they could've given him a mouth, but i don't think it would've been able to properly move. It just would've been a gap like we see on many protocol droids. But since that is barely an upgrade to what Malak has now, it'd be pointless
Cauterization takes time. If it's a instant severing of the limb there are chances it doesn't fully cauterize and some blood is still lost. For example the wampa in ESB.
@@veliki_dlek even partial cauterization will damage connective tissue and artieries, veins, etc. Even if theres some bleeding, you wont be able to reattach the limb. And a prosthetics to the degree of realism star wars had would require removal of the damaged tissue to connect properly with the nerves, bone, and everything else it would need to. Ironically, veins and such are the ONLY thing it would not need to connect to. So their condition wouldn't affect the decision much
Malak enjoyed the horror he revealed the lose-jaw to intimidate and strike fear into his subordinate. His Commanders thoughts how are you still alive can Lord Malak even die?
It was probably the medical science reason why he couldn't fully repair his jaw. In episode 3 revenge of the sith anakin has a metal hand rather than the skin looking one luke had during empire. Now imagine how outdated the technology is in the old republic compared to time difference of episode 3 and 5.
Honestly I think that was more a movie production difference. When episode 5 came out, it would have been really hard to make it look realistic if the hand was just metal. So they decided that Luke's replacement hand would just look like his normal hand so the actor didn't have to constantly wear something or constant special effects weren't needed. When episodes 2 and 3 were made, it was much easier to make a convincing fake metal arm on screen and it looked much more cool.
The only way I can really fathom it is imagining in the star wars universe, Prosthetic technology is just like... super neglected. And why would they anyway? They have bacta and kolto.
I figured the reason is technology. Kotor is thousands of years before the movies, so they may not have had synthetic flesh back then either or the means to fully fix someone's face.
