personally i have only had one hinderer so far (skinny xm-18, both sides g10) and wow was this knife underwhelming! first flick (or rather try) was so crazy hard that it left a nice mark on my hand. but it didn't end there lol. next thing i noticed was the blade which was so off that it scratched a liner, so i opened it up and checked if anything was wrong on the inside. all looked fine, so i put it back together and played a bit with the screw tension (body screws as well) but absolutely nothing changed the horrible centering. so i switched the washers for the bearings and though it looked a bit better centering wise, it was still completely off. then i decided to shoot hinderer knives an email and mentioned that i'm from switzerland and how to proceed (which was probably a mistake, cause after multiple mails over the course of 3 months i never got an answer). eventually i sold the knife for a low price (lost 200 bucks, obviously mentioned that it was defective) and that's the end of the story. never ever hinderer again, literally every $30 chinese cheapo knife i've owned had better fit'n'finish and action.
For me the skinny was my favorite rendition . Everyone’s needs are different so I respect whatever opinion people may have. It is their money spent at the end of the day .
You just need a nunber 12 spanner bit sold in any hardware store or Walmart to remove the pivot. I also had difficulty removing the plate on one of my Hinderers (I have 5), but that's because it was a very precise fit. Maybe it was just a little too precise, but I'm not aure its fair to ding a knife because it doesnt fall into its separate pieces when you remove a screw.
Funny you should comment today I just held a zt hinderer design about an hr ago and its far better built then my hinderer so....yeah I can tell the difference and hinderer definitely needs to up his game if he expects to continue to charge the prices he does and that's a shared opinion of many just go into some forums you either have chuckle head fan boys who would kiss Rick's ass if they could and then you have everyone else that thinks there overpriced like a mofo. Anyways thanks for the view and the comment totally helps my videos in the algorithm. Have a great night!
You have every right to your opinions and your video. No hate here. I can’t speak to RH as a person, but honestly I think you are letting your personal opinion of him and his company affect your opinion. I simply can’t understand how you think Hinderer knives are overpriced and in the same breath praise Chris Reaves?
it isnt proprietary hardware on the pivot. All you need is to buy a $3 spanner bit and you are in business. As far as the filler tab, all you had to do is disassemble the knife and tap the lock side with a rubber mallet and the tab would have popped right out. you are paying for very tight tolerances. You mentioned you would prefer phosphor bronze washers? the tri-way pivot system gives that as an option.
Thanks for tbe tip on the hardware...but no i don't believe hinderer has the best tolerances at least not when compared to other brands. I may chamge my opinion once I swap out the bearings for phosfer bronze washers but as it sits my We knives seem to have tighter tolerances than this himderer.
And no I tried doing exactly that the plate did not pop right out. They even told me at the wherehouse that they found it difficult to remove themselves so they replaced it entirely for me.
If you have that problem with the plate this is the easiest way. Remove all screws, lay pocket clip on top of plate and screw clip to plate. It won’t be long enough to screw into the knife and now you have a great leverage! Only has happened once to me but that’s how I fixed it.
@@H20cofilmandphoto2112it was a total lightbulb moment. Appreciate the honest review. I personally think hinderer is so popular because they give you the ability to customize. After having lived with my XM18 for a year, I feel like it was worth it. My biggest complaint is the price of everything else. The pivot tool is ridiculous. Proprietary hardware is stupid and I hate it. The tool should absolutely be included in the box, especially considering end users are expected to to be able to swap out the pivot system at will. That being said, I took a file and put a notch in a penny, which works perfectly. I also can't understand how they can justify charging $200+ for replacement scales. The markup is absolutely insane. Great knife, questionable company.
I absolutely agree after having and carrying it more. I hear Rick hiderer is a real dickhead and from some of his interviews i see why people say that haha. Hey man thanks for the view! Means a ton
I've held a CRK sebenza... talk about an underwhelming experience. I stopped wanting a CRK knife the day I held one. 🤣 I first had a ZT 0560 and while its action feels 'looser' than the XM-18, the 18 feels more substantial even with it being a smaller knife than the ZT. You don't spend $500 on a knife because it's a 'value' proposition. You buy it because it checks the boxes off for you... I liked the XM-18 design the first time I laid eyes on it. It is distinguishable from all other knife makers. The knife is solidly built, from premium materials, in a design people enjoy. What's not to like? This doesn't come across as a legitimate review. What were you expecting? It's a USA-made mid-tech knife with high-end steel sandwiched between 2 pieces of titanium...
