I guess it’s the same as any motorsport at amateur level. I worked for three years as a tech with a Formula Ford team that raced every other weekend for precisely no prize money. The formula we raced in could’ve had prize money but that would’ve just hiked the cost of entering the races in order to raise the cash for a prize fund. We had a driver that paid for all of our costs and we worked on the car as a hobby, he bought the food, the beer and curry in the evenings of a race weekend and we did it all for the fun of racing and gaining experience. We would strip the whole engine down and rebuild it every three or four races and it was all just a good laugh, five of us worked together to make it happen and we travelled around Europe racing at all sorts of circuits. All done for the fun of it and to prove we could repair / rebuild and race a car with no input from a pro team, we won occasionally and drive home after a win felt a whole lot shorter than when our driver wrecked the car or destroyed an engine.
