Thank you for the post. What a pleasant change these videos are from the over hyped usual RUclips bts breakdowns. Lewis’s low key and matter of fact demeanour is so so appreciated given he approaches all the set ups with such simple solutions yet achieving such excellent results. Simply the best cinematography breaks downs I have seen on RUclips and pitched at a professional level that anyone can learn from. Just a complete pleasure. Thank you.
Yeah, I'd go as far as to say the flashier a youtube video looks, the less inspiring its content often is. At least for solo operations where you need to prioritise where to focus your attention.
When Lewis uploads, I stop whatever i'm doing and watch. My manager keeps asking why I just ran out the meeting and... oh now he's just staring at my screen.
Love to see a video on the importance of your ACs in commercial shoots or any shoot and what kits you’d recommend an AC have or bring to a set. Maybe even a guest commentary from your WA AC team… but, ya know… I can keep wishing :p
best breakdowns - thanks so much for putting these out consistently! I really appreciate seeing how you shape natural light which is particularly helpful for low-to-no budget filmmakers
Been watching your videos for a while, and I finally shot my first indie short film yesterday (coincidentally on RED Komodo). I am so happy with the results so far, and forever grateful to you, Lewis.
This is incredible. Not only are you showing techniques on lighting but just how good the komodo can look in the right hands. Great job. Would be interested in seeing a breakdown of how it was rigged for this gig. Thanks for sharing as always.
Love the breakdowns! Curious to know with the first shots at 2:00 and 2:07. You keyed him from the left for shot 1 and keyed from right for shot 2, even though it felt like it was shot in the same direction. Was that a stylistic choice or easier to shape with where the sun was? Or simply no need for continuity so whatever worked?
Fan of the channel, got my first running job on set with a dp called James Friend and directed by Mike Valentine. Those dolly's are heavy asf. Really love the content, has helped me learn loads so far and helped me understand professional workflow! You rock!
I’m ready for this let’s go! [EDIT] This is what we call in French « concis ». I always enjoy these short forms of breakdowns, super informative and useful. Sending some love from Paris!
Thank you so much for doing these. I’ve been wanting to get better at lighting and watching your videos has incredibly helped me think about setups and know how to adapt to certain situations.
Interesting how it seems you are flipping sides for the key light. For example, 1:54 the key light is on our left, but 2:12 the key is on our right. At 2:48 it makes sense that if they are looking east, the sun would be behind them. But it still looks like, from the shot, the key light would be from the sky in front of them, but at 3:25 you placed the key light behind them.
Love your work, amazing as always! One thing I would love to see more of in these breakdowns is a bit more information on in camera settings ie. white balance, ISO, aperture
This is a wonderfully informative post with so many breakdowns across a single commercial! Was your 1200D (bounced into the beadboard) at 100% when using it this way? I'm surprised by how well it competes with the background even though it's getting full sun. I'm trying to get a sense as to how useful a 600D would be for situations like this, when shooting medium shots, while still trying to keep it looking natural.
Really really love your approach on your projects; learning so much from watching your videos on here. Squarespace ad is so sick btw..we need a breakdown on that just for fun
Just wondering. For the shot at 1:42, since the sunlight went from the left side of camera (according to the shadow of the warehouse), why did you put the diffusion on right side instead of left?
For some reason I thought the vfx-installation was a practical lighting rig accenting the trucks break lights..and then removed in post. Lol. Thanks for another one, much appreciated.
Thanks a lot ! I always learn something ! I would love to know more about production planing and general workflow on set (how many people your were). Thanks a lot !
Thanks for the vid, I really enjoy your minimalistic solutions and the result they give. It would be such a pleasure to know how exactly you pick your lighting intensity, because sometimes there is no possibility to take LED's on set (on which you can choose the intensity), sometimes you have to work with tungsten light and you don't want to be over or underexposed.
It's refreshing to see actual directors and cinematographers making content on RUclips.
Can you recommend some other channels?
Haha fuck yes, agreed. I love Wandering DP, who else is there?
@@mribi I love Griffin Conway, Danny Gevirtz, Waqas Qazi, Mark Bone, Threefold, Epic Light Media, and Robert Machado.
Wait.... Are you suggesting that everyone on RUclips isn't a cinnamontographer?
@@Gleebi yes.
The colors are amazing, It would be really interesting to see a grading breakdown on this spot 🙌
I agree the color grading looks so good!!
Agreed
yes man. i would die for those colours
@Lewis Potts 100 likes, now you'll have to do it🙃
The wit of lighting is so impressive. Thank you!!

Can't tell you how valuable this kind of content is for those of us wanting to elevate our projects and understand lighting better. Thank you so much!
Easily the coolest Squarespace ad/integration I have ever seen. Awesome video!
When Lewis uploads, I stop whatever i'm doing and watch. My manager keeps asking why I just ran out the meeting and... oh now he's just staring at my screen.
The squarespace ad was so good I watched it multiple times to get another look at the shots
THIS is how you do a Square Space AD. Awesome breakdown, always learning something from you. Great video!
The shot with the guy in the rain gives me superhero vibes. Love it!
I’m sohappy you exist. Thank you for this great bts breakdown. So useful

Your passion for images comes out of my screen through your eyes :) Your work is just elegant.
FINALLY! Love these no BS, super helpful shot breakdown videos. Keep them coming!!
Lewis Potts days are the best days

best breakdowns - thanks so much for putting these out consistently! I really appreciate seeing how you shape natural light which is particularly helpful for low-to-no budget filmmakers
This channel is crazy. Even during the Ad breaks I learn things
Great video as always! I love how you focus on the lights in the background. Small details that help us elevate our images.
So incredibly helpful. You can use these techniques across all budgets. Thank you!
Been watching your videos for a while, and I finally shot my first indie short film yesterday (coincidentally on RED Komodo). I am so happy with the results so far, and forever grateful to you, Lewis.
So rad. Could we get an editing breakdown of your squarespace ad? Even that was so good.
Making the Komodo look like vintage film stock, nice!
Epic Light Media always turns me onto great creators. You definitely have a new subscriber.
This is incredible. Not only are you showing techniques on lighting but just how good the komodo can look in the right hands. Great job. Would be interested in seeing a breakdown of how it was rigged for this gig. Thanks for sharing as always.
Thanks! Dan Stone is my AC give him a shout on insty I'm sure he'll answer questions
We've missed you Lewis!
Dude these are incredible to watch! Please keep doing these lighting breakdowns!
Love your breakdowns! I like how your setups are simple yet so effective. Love you color grading too!
That VFX shot was amazing wow

These shots were not connected in the commercials, they're similar, but separate moments
Another great video, mate! Beautiful images as always.
Really neat. I'll have to try a large reflector with a light some time. looked like it gave off great light
Always a pleasure watching your videos Lewis, thanks for the insight!
Really enjoyed your breakdown of this commercial! Thank you!
Great vid as always mate, always learn so much from these vids
Always a ton of great info in these breakdowns. Thank you for continuing to put these out there!
Dope AD sequence especially the computer screen perspective.
Amazing. These are so insightful, especially for someone who’s just starting out (like me). Thanks so much for sharing!
Love your type of video. Great to see! Keep it up brother
Dude, thank you for the overall transparency and candid video of real on set work. It's gives me some great ideas for my own work!
Everytime one of your video pops up I get excited! Love your work! Keep it up 👍
Love the BTS shots in this one. Thanks for the breakdown, Lewis!
Love your content! Would love to see the full commercial!
Truly incredible. You have no idea how helpful these videos are.
Fan of the channel, got my first running job on set with a dp called James Friend and directed by Mike Valentine. Those dolly's are heavy asf. Really love the content, has helped me learn loads so far and helped me understand professional workflow! You rock!
Good to hear man!
Amazing dude, you're quickly becoming one of my favorites to learn from!
Damnit! Where as your channel been all my life!!! Such an amazing style and well articulated breakdowns. Now time to try some of these techniques out!
Literally just saw this ad on TV!!!
Brahhhh how good are these man ! I’m learning so much watching your content plus I love your stuff Lewis. Absolutely crazy man
Love these break downs
You have the best squarespace ads!
Love the breakdown and use of Aputure lights!
Loving your work and these bts you’re producing. Please keep it up
Cool stuff! Love it when filmmakers share these kinds of breakdowns! keep it up! 💪
that was the best ad read I've seen on youtube.
I started laughing when that commercial ran lol, its ridiculous how good you are at the craft!! 🙌🙌
This is spectacular! Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to make these and teach us wannabes, you are appreciated!
I've missed your videos, man. I've learned so much from them!!!
squarespace needs to hire you to shoot some commercials for them. Easily the best squarespace ad on any video out there
Question: as a general rule, when do you bounce versus diffuse? Thanks!!!!
Awesome question! I’d love to know that too
I’d say bounce is always softer and nicer but you diffuse when you need more output, want a bit of a harder look or can’t bounce because of the space.
@@stu9000 solid 🤘
I always get ready to spam the right arrow for ads, but on a lewis potts video I hesitate, pause and then watch them - best ads EVER.
I’m ready for this let’s go!
[EDIT]
This is what we call in French « concis ».
I always enjoy these short forms of breakdowns, super informative and useful.

I always learn so much from your breakdowns thank you
Really loved the colors and shot selection on this project! Great work!

154 and 212 are not matching shots, they're similar but at different points in the add. And yeah I think the other one could go both ways.
Love your work, amazing as always! One thing I would love to see more of in these breakdowns is a bit more information on in camera settings ie. white balance, ISO, aperture
Dang that komodo rig is insane, would love to see a breakdown of it !
I'm really curious what the budget range for this shoot was and how many total shoot days were spent.
This is a wonderfully informative post with so many breakdowns across a single commercial! Was your 1200D (bounced into the beadboard) at 100% when using it this way? So interesting watching your videos Lewis, I know its going to be a good day when you share a new vid! Cheers
Love your content, unique and premium.
Really dope breakdown of actual set. Also I like your striped shirt :)
Love the content! Please do more!
Lovely shooting mate, 5 mins of intense breakdown. Thank you!
Really really love your approach on your projects; learning so much from watching your videos on here. Squarespace ad is so sick btw..we need a breakdown on that just for fun

This is awesome, I'd love to see the end result. Where can I watch the full commercial?
Filmconvert, right? Would love to know what settings you used. Mainly for the grain. Looks great!
Love this channel
So good man! Love learning from you. Please keep it comin!!
For some reason I thought the vfx-installation was a practical lighting rig accenting the trucks break lights..and then removed in post. Lol.

First off. This was amazing. I think its awesome that your sharing your process. How can I see the entire video though?
Some of the best content going around
Love the ad you shot for Squarespace 😄
Im always waiting for that ad time 🙌
Is this a bit of a Severence reference looking at you through the computer monitor? I love that.
I wasn't thinking of it when I was making it, but I loved that show!
@@lewispotts I just realized it's also technique from The Salt of the Earth Salgado documentary. Maybe the show pulled it from there, who knows.
so cinematic
insane colors and composition...really nice to see bts and also how lighting should be simple and with purpose ;)
great breakdown. the footage looks beautiful. im curious to what kind of grain your adding to the footage in post that makes it look like film stock?
Such simple techniques but turned out so good!
Thanks for the behind the scene look. It is incredibly helpful for us newbies
excellent info, thanks for that. Could you do a video with a breakdown of your colour grading process.
also your videos just keep getting better! bravo
SO MUCH VALUE. Thank you!

always a great day when you release a new vid
Really enjoyed this breakdown. I dunno if you colored it but how did you get that red fringe on the highlights?
Thanks, the lens have a bit of chromatic aberration which creates that, I also added a little in the grade
