  • Restoration of the 1952 MG TD continues.
Unfortunately I had a camera transfer failure. A bunch of the clips I shot got corrupted either on the camera or during the transfer. As such, I really don't have a complete history. In this video I start with where we currently are and then add on some of the clips that transferred correctly. Hopefully this will not happen again.

Those dampers are of the Armstrong-Siddley type and were made by Luvax-Girling: complicated and a nightmare to repair and maintain. I went with a crosstube at the apex of the upward hump in the rear frame and settled for conventional telescopic shocks (in my case suitable for the rear axle of a VW Bus). This mod was okayed by my German TÜV authority since Riley declared this as an approved mod for their RMA model a year after my car was built in Abingdon in 1950. By the way, your car was was made literally accross the street in Abingdon from my car...just a bit of trivia. Good luck. Your build looks nice so far...

Thanks! I ended up taking the dampers apart, honing them and installing new seals. They didn't leak and worked great.

Looking at the video i see that you made some extensions on top of pedal, they are not original. The TD is a royal pain to operate the pedals Clutch Brake in particular. It is really tight down in the hole where the pedals are. I usually wear CROCS all day but i have to change shoes just to drive my TD. To my question, Why did you ad those extensions, does it help to reach the pedals? By the way nice work you do, keep going.

The brake and clutch pedals are how they were when I got the car. The parts car was the same way. I believe the piece you're referring to is on the Moss Motors exploded diagram for the brakes as part 44a (part 58 for the clutch) as "Pedal Pad Extender". I assumed these were original as the other TDs I've seen also had them.
I might have a set from the parts car if you're interested.

If you decide your parts frame is toast, I'm very interested in the right front frame horns. Abbington spares used to stock them but demand was so low they aren't available anymore... My right side is.... Ugly though it can be saved if necessary...

I haven't completely decided that but I'm pretty close to saying it is. Send me a message and let's discuss further.

You have the correct red color of engine paint. I've seen a lot out there, every color red you can imagine. Can you help me out with the name of your source and any other information you can provide would be helpful.
    Regards,
    John

How do I find what the best blasting media is for different areas & materials?
I have access, for small parts - say 2x2, to a water blaster. Would that be heavy enough for suspension & brake parts @ 17:05 in this video?
    Thx! jim

I used Black Diamond Blasting media. It is a coal slag product and I find it works well and lasts forever. You can get it at Tractor Supply Company. A few years ago I made a significant investment in building a very large blasting cabinet. I got the various parts for TP Tools. I got the carbide nozzle for the gun. Once I got things setup properly it has been fantastic. Well worth the effort.
