Leib nitz Some weird shit happened with YT’s copyright bots and Dream Catalogue had to do some work getting them to put the taken down videos back up. I honestly had no control over it or I wouldn’t have even taken it down in the first place. I sincerely love not only this album but honestly the comment section as well, it’s fun to read for a lot of different reasons.
I finally decided to do the translation of the movie clip sample in the first track: ----------- 为什么我们不能像以前一样? Why we cannot be like what we used to be? 不要走 Do not go. 今天晚上留下来吧 Please stay tonight. ------------ Hope this helps.
Traveled for over 26 straight hours from the USA to a resort in Phan Thiet, Vietnam for my honeymoon back in 2015. Played this song on a wireless soundbar in our resort as we were beyond exhausted. Will never forget the feeling of drifting in and out of sleep to this. Now my wife has passed away, and that moment, listening to this album will alway sit with my soul.
Sorry for your loss, bro. It's very cool how you connect your feelings very deeply with this album. It has this same effect for me, it's kind of a healing and transcending sensation.
Today I've been to a celebration walk in paris and for one of the first time I felt totally at home, in the right place surrounded by people I barely talked to but whose energy were present and fair. I know they exist but they just hide like the rest of us. It's even more interesting. Now I can see life through a "treasure hunt" perspective
A while back I saw a video saying “If the mona lisa was made today, it would have got lost in the internet.” and I think the same thing about this album. If this album was made 50 years earlier, i feel like it would have been one of the most important experimental albums of the 20th century. I worry if people will remember albums like this in a few generations time.
walking aimlessly thru hong kong at 2am. slightly foggy. you have no friends, have no hobbies. you have no meaning in your life. you enjoy the neon lights that fill your city.
Mate, that comment was like poetry. Love the "in the moment" sense of the world being tough, but right now, the lights look nice and that's all that matters.
Man, if only someone knew how much I listened to this album in its entirety. I've fallen asleep to this album, studied, worked, disassociated, felt depressed and anxious, enjoyed train rides and drives at night with these songs. I love vaporwave no doubt, but this album is incredibly special and 2814 will always be reserved a special place in my heart.
This reminds me of the times I would spend coming home late on the trains in Tokyo, watching the whizzing traffic and buzzing neon signs pass by. The serenity and silence of the trains added so much to the vibe too.
"I discovered a new vaporwave album!" "Oh, nice! How is it called?" "Hm... I don't know, it has a lot of japanese symbols" "I see... How is the cover?" "It's purple..." "THIS DOES NOT HELP!"
I can tell this is a google translate attempt.. It is : (あたらしい) (ひ) (たんじょう) 新しい日 の 誕生 "Atarashii hi no tanjyou" Atarashii = new hi = day no = 「の」 particle (possessive) tanjyou = birth
To be fair, if you give that description to anybody with a passing interest in vapor they'd know what album you're talking about. This is one of the classics.
Everyone who has listened to this has found this song during a rough, and uncertain time. Losses, internal struggles, and so on... what I find fascinating is that the first song on this album is named recovery. this song, those tough times, and the will to realize that we can still push through all the crap we're going through. everyone who reads this, I wish you guys success, a great life, and don't give up because you never know how close you really are to your salvations and dream life.
I found it during a panic attack years ago, and it immediately made me focus on my breathing and heart rate, I noticed they began to slow, I could breathe again. I listen to a lot of ambient music (Brian Eno, Aphex, The KLF, etc.) and others that claim to be healing. This album is something special, and a league above the rest. I can truly feel it as it hits me in waves. It's one of my favorites of all time, and it never gets old.
+Artzie Music dystopian - an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. You're aware of the definition, yes?
So... i was playing VRchat and i don't know why but: i searched in the world list for "2814" and i was so happy to discover that someone did a small and chill apartment with the city view from this album cover, with rain effect, and of course a music player with 2814 music... It's now my "home" / spawn point, and im very happy with it
The first time I listened to this was driving out of a therapy session after a suicide attempt. Now I listen to it a few years later and my life has turned around, I am happy and free. Still a beautiful sounding album... no matter how you feel, it still fits the moment.
D.W this is what I am going through right now. How did u overcome it? I feel like somewhere alone the line I lost faith in everything and have no hope. I feel so claustrophobic in my body I just don’t want to feel this pain anymore. I am so sad.😢
@@rhondagustafson2684 my humble advice is to focus on the body first. good food and exercise. sounds too simple but it is effective. pilates or yoga to start with heavy exercise may be too much. it is amazing how much of our mental pain is anchored in the body. when the body is modified through gentle exercise a lot of what seemed like never ending negative thought-loops about the past or indeed fears of the future evaporate. meditation does work but it is hard to begin when feeling depressed. try ten minutes at a time to start. no need for lots of books about meditation just one really good one like "The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science for Greater Mindfulness" by John Yates. It is practical and gives a good guide to what to expect and when. Then give it a go. Tune out negative news. You are free to choose what media diet you prefer. If its getting you down you have every right to switch it off. Don't fret for the future. It WILL work itself out. We live in a Self-Organizing Universe. Be Well!!!
+nickieliscp Yes! God this sort of atmosphere gets me thinking about things like that. It inspires creativity but also what you've said. I can't really think of how else to explain it other than yeah, wanting something different in life; more akin to this. Weird...
This album is complete magic. Every time I listen to it it takes me back to the time I first heard it. Alone in my bed at night, wrapped up in my covers as the house was always so cold. In the darkness of my room with rain hitting the windows and the light of the street lamp creeping through the curtains, I would listen and be in complete awe of this album. I was just finishing my final year of study. I felt anxiety and excitement not knowing the road ahead. I felt alone and independent, something that makes me happy to my core. I would stare at the ceiling with this playing and imagine how the future would play out. It's nice that this album takes me back to a time in my life that I remember so fondly, the final time I was truly 'free'. Things are a lot different now.
This has a heavy cyberpunk feel to it, my kinda style! Is this a certain variant of vaporwave? Because I have listened to many, many different albums and none of them are as seducing and calming as this. Most are upbeat, heavy 80's themed sample filled albums that get old after a while, but this is the first album that brings to my mind Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Blade Runner, etc. The sound effects and scope of the album sounds like this is the soundtrack to an urban cityscape, a futuristic noir setting, nothing campy about it. WHAT IS THIS STYLE!? AND IS THERE MORE LIKE THIS!?
It's definitely Vaporwave but with a lot heavier emphasis on Ambient elements. The two individual artists who make up 2814, namely t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 and HKE, both have a lot of stuff out and some of it is definitely a precursor to this record or has since been inspired by this collaboration, so check out their work for sure. Immune's album 'Breathless' is another you might also wanna scope out for a Cyberpunk feel.
Telepath did an interview recently where he said he's taking Dream Catalogue more into an ambient driven direction. So, keep an eye out for new releases on Dream. Also, if you haven't already check out this album ハートエイクに歩い by Remember. It's on a different label which is also Telepath. ;)
a cyber punk urban dreamscape. its the 80s or 90s, a nostalgia for pure possibility in things in a techno-digital overlay, even if it in a veil of misery and urban loathing. the city lights outside glimmering on a blue-black night sky, off in the distance the sounds and sirens of the city hymn. its like this music makes you long for a past that never was, because the future ahead seems so sterile, decadent and nihilistic.
thanks guys for the comments! im mostly a metalhead predominantly, but this type of music really brings me to other states of mind, it carries you off into sonic imaginations.
this music gives the most private and secret parts of your brain a soundtrack to grow to. it feeds that place where you live your second life, in the depths of your fantasies. about being someone else in some other environment, where things didn't go so horribly wrong and where it didn't seem like you weren't really present in your own life. you really felt that love, you felt that pain, that passion and all those moments when you felt that the world is only ever worth seeing in the places where you are not right now. that life is only ever worth living if it's not the one you have now. it's a painful paradox of expectation.
Actually no for many of us it just reminds us of exactly the environment we live in and have grown up in - a crowded concrete jungle synthetic neon city. It isnt all fantasy to us.
Listened to this a couple weeks ago in Tokyo. Imagine exiting the subway on a rainy night at Shibuya station, walking through the crossing and around the surrounding area with this streaming into your head for a couple hours. It's an amazing place without this aesthetic overlaid.. but with it, and in particular this album, the experience is kinda spiritual.
Walking through a rain-soaked and neon saturated urban sprawl as the rain slowly crawls off of your hunched shoulders, as the city looks on while everyone is asleep. High rises stretch for miles, breaking up the once-serene organic landscape into a brutal and harsh geometric miscellany. No matter what you do, the world looks past you. You exist as a small part, insignificant.
And as you look around you you realize you are but a part of a machine. Only existing to perpetuate the pointless conception of consumerism, only to look mindlessly at the bright neon advertisements on buildings dripping wet with droplets on the signs and billboards like pixels on a screen.
And one day you realize that there's a plenty of us who are alone. You break the invisible glass wall that stands between you and the others and you start to sabotage the machine.
The night train back from work. You look at the passengers around you. A man covered head to toe in mechanical body modifications sits to your left, fiddling with a display set into the flesh on his forearm. To your right, an anxious extraterrestrial, its antennae curled back in discomfort at the heavy scent of humanity filling the air. Across the aisle, a wide-eyed child of indeterminate gender watches intensely as the sleek blue android next to them polishes its own detached leg. And holding the child's hand, an old woman, modestly dressed with an unaltered figure, appearing, in general, out of place in her surroundings. She peers straight ahead at nothing in particular, her face fixed in an expression of longing. You put on your headphones.
Figured it out....I'm the Doctor in a stasis chamber that looks like a train and all of my memories are here as i prepare to chill with my vaporwave music, i close my eyes as this album starts and everything seemingly disappears as i slip into a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of euphoria flows over me.
I am not a great critic/analyst/commentator, but here goes my observations: Hong Kong Express provides us with a dreamy voyage in the night city of Hong Kong. I do not possess enough knowledge to comment on t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者’s part in this album, but I know his work is also very ambient in nature and flows slowly, yet with detail and expression. This album paints us an experience, with the city being the canvas, the stage on which the story unfolds. In it, we learn about lovers and their own experiences in the city. The transition between songs is very light and almost limitless, as the description on RUclips suggests. This adds to the flowness of the album, as it requires you to be connected to the music at all times. The characters might be many and not necessarily lovers, but there is a mutual feeling of love and utopia which connects them. Echoes and ambient sounds are crucial in Hong Kong Express’ work, in order to include the urban influence and captivate us. This album requires a lot of immersion, as it invites you to daydream with it. It talks about feelings, as it depicts states of emotion. The protagonists in this work are less active, stationed in pensiveness and platonic thoughts. It seems to talk about hope, a light at the end of this tunnel of sorrow (5. 悲哀/Sorrow). It suggests that the characters involved are physically distant from each other, yet close in mind, in intentions, in dreams and desires. Once again we notice how the city pulls them away from each other, as the urban infrastructure and lifestyle drags them around the city, through romantically-lit corners, tunnels, bridges, alleyways, metro stations and other elements of the city. While this happens, they are thinking, wondering, reaching for their dreams inside their heads as life flies like a bullet all around their bubble of immersion. The hurry and chaos of the urban life seems to fade to the sides, becoming peripheral, as we engage in a static state of being, soaring above the city lights. Their hearts join the extravaganza of coloured lights, emitting their own divinity, glowing and connected through invisible waves of energy as they exercise their own creativity. Who knows - maybe one day they will meet. And when they do, it will be because the city brought them together. City and capitalism. Capitalism demands everything to be done systematically and very quickly. However, this album features an escapism. It is funny how the city’s anatomy, influenced by the ideals of capitalism, will be the ground for this reunion of love. Speed, transport...all of these things have their meanings changed when you are in love with something or someone.
Jesus, that was a beautiful comment! Especially when reading it and listening to the album at the same time, it flows and you don't even need to think, you just feel. It's beautiful what the power of what we call art can do, and also.. art is contagious, just listening to this, we can do alot of incredible things, such writing so good like this and other things. Congrats!
Bigote Thanks very much! Thank you all for the kind comments. I was really inspired when I wrote this hahaa. Thats what music does to us. I wish you alot of music in your lives ❤️
Nothing in the genre can really compete with the shit telepath has made. His collabs with other artists have always been fucking amazing (Televape alias with VAPERROR, other albums he made with with HKE, collabs with 猫 シ Corp, his entire Virtual Dream Plaza label). This man is a vaporwave virtuoso
@@__jojo__ Amen. For real. Telepath (mr. Virtual Dream Plaza) is like the King Midas; whatever he does turns into pretty Epic Stardust as if re-routing n effecting n reviving neural pathways conjuring up deep joy, gratitude, beauty, sadness n rare intense emotions coming from interesting directions triggered by an assault of specific themes, perfectly chosen sounds n off course extremely Cunning Skills no!? One of the vaporwave Gods yess... Cheers ; D
2814 and ESPRIT / George Clanton really are something special. Follow them, show them love. They're going to make it big. I Just know it. I can feel it.
Update/Edit: Thanks to everyone who supported and bought the vinyl edition of this, it went so well that we ended up pressing double our original intention of 500 and doing 1000. You can get the album here on our Bandcamp: dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/--18 To everyone who asks about second pressing, we are still considering it but also focusing on other albums on the label too, but we would like to do a second run eventually
If you're interested in this album PLEASE do yourself a favour and listen to the song this upload forgot, it's track 5 - 悲哀/Sorrow, and is easily a huge highlight, especially the melody at the 135 second mark, go check it out, very sad most people miss it from this upload
This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever made, and I don't say that lightly. This album doesn't just sound good, but it actually captures something, a feeling that you can't describe with words. It's the feeling you get sitting at an empty train station at night, or watching the sunset on a beach with the boardwalk in the distance, or driving home through a blizzard at night. It's so incredibly difficult to explain and so fleeting. I guess that's why I keep coming back to it; it's the only way I can really be reminded of these moments, not in the specific content of them but in the feeling of them. This album is special because it puts that feeling into audio form, and it does it so flawlessly it feels like witchcraft. It's easy to get caught up in all the bullshit, you know? Like school and friendships and work and blah blah blah. It gets to a point where it overwhelms you, and you want so badly to escape. You want to go back to that train station, or that beach, or that car, because that's the only place you know you can experience the essence of what it means to be human. To be a sentient conscious thinking being. To be at peace. To be in awe. To wonder and contemplate and theorize. To experience what your ancestors did when they first looked up at the stars and wondered what those bright lights in the sky were. You can do that with this album. It might sound melodramatic or whatever but I really do mean it. If all traces of mankind suddenly vanished from earth except one thing to be remembered by, one single token of all our collective experiences, accomplishments, highs and lows, it would be a vinyl copy of Birth of a New Day by 2814, pristine and untouched, sitting next to a record player.
I was really high and I played this for the first time while riding my bike down a city highway bridge at midnight. I cried for a little while. Thank you.
Haha ye. I highly recommend listening to some ambient Vaporwave, Chillwave, Proto-Vaporwave, any chill tracks while out in the city at night. Being high too is recommended.
This is by far the best album that I've ever heard... in the past year and a half, my taste in music varied from deep house to tech house to vaporwave... but I always seemed to come back to this particular album again and again and again. Something about it clicks with me and puts me in a state of trance and internal peace. True masterpiece. Just wish I knew more information about the composers & similar works of theirs.
Here, I'll throw ya a link to each of their individual bodies of work. HKE: hkedream.bandcamp.com/ Telepath: telepathtelepath.bandcamp.com/ The label they're both on and that HKE himself founded that has shit-tons of good stuff on it: dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/ Go forth and explore!
@munky cheez There's a lot of quality stuff on the Elemental 95 label if you haven't checked that one out. I'd suggest looking around there. elemental95.bandcamp.com/
@EHCЧайка I really wish you'd allow replies when you intend to ask a question, but nevertheless... These translations are basically as "official" as you're gonna get. The artists collaborating on the project, or at least in Hong Kong Express' case as t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 is very, VERY secretive, are both (to my knowledge) very fluent in English and essentially use Kanji (or Chinese in the case of HKE's solo work) as a part of the overall visual aspect of their respective aesthetics. The fact that pretty much every title in this album alone, not to mention much of t e l e p a t h's solo titles, translates directly to a phrase in proper English without the slightest hint of Engrish sort of hints at a translator program being used, as any genuine translation of the two vastly different languages would inevitably have some oddities.
thapoint09 Well it's basically the other way around. The Japanese text is probably their equivalent to Engrish precisely because the artists did it English-to-Japanese in Google Translate. That's why it re-translates back into normal English without any quirks.
thapoint09 It's essentially taking normal English and converting it into broken Japanese. The only reason why the possibly broken Japanese works when fed back into the translator is that the artists use like... one or two words at a time in many cases and very simple phrases in others. If it had to be a sentence the results would probably be ridiculous.
Fell asleep to this last night. Then i had a lucid dream, i drove in my car through a city at night, while this music was constantly in my ears. I just drove, watched the buildings and lights pass and existed. I had no bad feelings, no thoughts, i just enjoyed how good it can be to just "be". In that dream i felt so unbelievable happy i cant describe, it really showed me what a great tool my mind is. We can create moments that feel real in our imagination, feelings, persons and places that all are as good or even better as "reality". But the more depressed i was when i woke up and had to go to my everyday-life again. I even cried because i didnt want this perfect experience to end. Im generally not satisfied with my life at the moment, growing old and realizing that all your dreams and wishes will stay dreams. Only in my head, i can live the life i want, i can have these perfect moments, i can be who i am. I love this music for leading me to such places. Through it, i can live.
You can change your everyday life, if you're willing to step up. If you are depressed and unsatisfied with your current situation, you should do everything in your power to change it for the better. Even small changes will eventually make you feel less tormented. If someone else is hindering you from being who you are, you have every right to cut them out of your life, or at least confront them with the situation. I see my dreams as very achievable goals, but that may be a matter of perspective, for my dreams are very modest. I don't need much to be happy. Life is very short and feeling constant pain is not a good way to live. I hope you feel better in the future man.
this music takes you to a time and place. creates a world that only you can access. sounds that make you imagine colors, sights, and smells. there is no limit to the mind through music. it can create memories from experiences that have not happened. let it
Man, you should’ve seen my face when I first listened to the 6th track while studying late into the night. The motherfucker was baffled at how such beautiful music was made by human beings
imo this is not the best album of the '10s, but it is up there somewhere. My candidate is Amon Tobin's ISAM, such a mindblowing experience with gorgeous sound design
Could just be sounding crazy, but the fact that most vaporwave (especially stuff from this album) is able to make nearly all of us feel extreme nostalgia, cause lucid dreams, and other stuff makes me think this is legitimately a music form of a drug/psychidelic. I could go and listen to a bunch of metal, and afterward come back to this. This shit is amazing
I put on this album, wanted to smoke some weed while listenting to it, i really wanted to smoke but i couldnt do it. I was too busy with the influence of the music, in a way it really is like a drug or at least it can have similar effects on the human mind.
Art can have a profound effect on the audience if they allow it, vaporwave speaks to people in a way that creates these effects. So yeah, kinda like a drug, but with no down-sides.
people here talking about long drives and futuristic ideas but i closed my eyes and instead of something deep i felt empty and i could imagine myself floating in spcae, i saw plnets and stars...endless abyss of stars ...idk how to feel...i dont feel happy or overjoyed as im particularly stressed these days (exam results and all that crap)...but i dont feel sad or something negative....i feel empty i feel ok...this album im so glad i stumbled across this....its beautiful truly
i have never felt more alive in my entire life! can't even begin to describe what this album does to me. there's so much trouble taking place in my life right now, this seems the best and healthiest way to escape it. thank you guys for making such an incredible and blissful record. looking forward to get a copy :)
I genuinely enjoy the vaporwave genre so much that I didn't even know that some people think it's just a meme. I think it's a new movement of art that is very much relevant for this day and age
In my personal opinion, I would say a lot of it is due to floral shoppe. A lot of effort was put into that album, and I love it dearly, but to a lot of people, the statue head and the japanese text and stuff made it look like a meme. Not to mention how the songs put people under the impression that vaporwave was just slowing down songs and making them skip around. Great album but to the untrained eye and ear, I understand how some would be under that impression. I don't know any of this for sure, this is just my theory.
I fell in love for the first time to this album. A girl I met, a fellow student at university, came over to my studio apartment and we talked and drank together. I was too emotionally repressed to be able to open up to her, emotionally or physically. Slowly, over the course of two nights, spread out over three weeks, she encouraged me to open up and to make a move. I wasn't a virgin but this was the first time I'd actually allowed myself to feel an emotional connection to someone else, it was the first time I was vulnerable, and suddenly I had a hard time being physical. If this, whatever it was, went wrong, I knew I would not be able to deceive myself into acting like I never cared in the first place. Eventually, I kissed her - awkwardly. We didn't discuss it. It left me reeling. The next morning I called her up to tell her sorry. But she told me she liked it. She would come over again that night. Over the course of the next few weeks, we would lay in bed from sunset to sunrise at least a dozen times. Kissing and cuddling. Not even really having sex - just exploring each other's vulnerable naked bodies. Lovingly touching each other. It was the most beautiful time of my life. And all the while, this album was playing in the background, at least five or six times every night. I told her I loved her for the first time on one of those nights. We're still together. Things are different now. Maybe not as idyllic as they once were. But I still love her. And this album brings me right back to those nights that no one can ever - EVER - take away from me. I was privileged to have experienced them and I will cherish them forever. It was one of those moments in life that change you forever - and for me, this album was the soundtrack to such a moment. I wish that the musicians behind this album could know what it has come to mean to me. Anyway, I felt like sharing that. I come back here sometimes to relive those moments and I was in the mood to share.
+kz1000ps Totally agree. I like this but the Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack is awesome. Also, check Out Kuedo's severant album from 2011 if you want a modern take on the Blade Runner feel.
i wish the dystopia we got was this cool. why is it that reality gets all the corporations, police, and enviornmental degradation, while having none of the cool aesthetics?
Shout-out to all the nerds that found this in the experimental section of Bandcamp back when it was really new. It really was unlike anything else back then.
@@丛雨线 People from mainstream won't find it easily, so it is mainstream for us (who often listen to vaporwave) but underground for those who don't listen to vaporwave
I love this album. It helps me drift off to sleep as I lay awake pondering the questions in my life such as: why don't normies listen to Vaporwave? Why does nobody take it seriously as a genre? If people keep saying it's gonna take off, why hasn't it? Do these Japanese characters actually mean anything, or is it all just for the a e s t h e t i c? Where can I find the dankest memes? If I pretend I'm all deep and enlightened in the comments, will it actually make me popular?
+Baggy Lambart "Should I hunt around for an Apple II, or merely downgrade my computer to Windows 95?" "Is it technically a new genre if I use Korean characters instead of Japanese ones?" "What distortion preset on Audacity should I use for my next album?" "How can I shoehorn a Lain reference into my album art without it looking too obvious?"
+Tom Servo "I wonder if zellers would give me their playlist" "I should get a pair of heelies" "my mom would like vaporwave if she got high" "that would sound a lot more a e s t h e t i c if it was slowed down"
'Meme genre' means that it started with a meme on the internet, which is technically right and doesn't applies to "real life" genres. However it remains incorrect to imply that the whole genre is inferior to other kinds of music on the sole basis that is "meme music" which is a ridiculous argument, even by music criticism standards. Then again Idgaf about any of that, I love the sound of this.
Vincent Lambert There's that angle, yeah. I was going by the original "memetic" definition that has been distorted by contemporary internet culture. But I'm not going to go into some silly dialectic philosophical discussion about what makes the which semantic the "right" one. Your point still stands. In either case what people are implying either way is that the genre is lowbrow popular and inauthentic and therefore bad, which doesn't apply to all rock music anymore than vaporwave, regardless of how you want to define "meme genre."
This album is such an absolutely brilliant piece of work. It's one of the best compilations of audiovisual art I've ever listened to. It literally detaches my consciousness from my surroundings, it enables me to think freely and enables me to fully concentrate my mind. I'm a designer, and whenever I have to come up with an idea for a complex problem, I put on this album and let my thoughts revolve around it. It's amazing how many times it made me able to come up with amazing ideas (if I may say so myself). This album is some kind of amazing proof that music can do more to a brain than just make you feel happy.
This is magic I stepped away from vaporwave for a while but this has defiantly caught my attention yet again. Love all the real instrumentation with the live sounds. This album is incredible. Each song is evolving and moves together so elegantly like I am experiencing something totally new and different each listen. Marvelous synth work. This is art.
tbh vaporwave was always one of my guilty pleasures, but this album is truly a masterpiece. this is definitely not a guilty pleasure and im glad i found this. i hope vaporwave continues in this direction because this is beautiful. (listen to this album on zero hours of sleep at 3 am...that was strange, but somewhat magical experience..)
this comment is so underrated, i thought the same exact thing when i found this. I can just picture case walking down side streets in hong kong with lights blaring coming down from a serious high
I liked that this album, at half listening speed, sounds good as like defunct television content that I really like watching while smoking my drugs & this is good fun that I think is awesome LoFi vibes that I like. I enjoy this art passionately & also the psychedelia. Good feelings!
Vaporwave is a genre I'm having trouble having exact thoughts. Sometimes it can be something stupid and weird, other times it can have sort of a message (well it's kind of against consumer capitalism and such), and other times, it actually can create some pretty unique works, like the songs in this album. Vaporwave is one of the strangest music genres I've come across and I'm still wondering whether or not it's just mostly a fun little joke thing or actually has some sort of purpose to its existence.
To me I find that it has like a hidden magic to it. Among all the memes and campy-cheesy stuff you might find, there's stuff like this album which is a work of fucking art I might add
Get on the dream catalouge. the founder is HKE, which is half of 2814. Let me link you dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/ You Forget This by Sangnam is like this, but more of a personal vibe to it
Hey, a pretty young listener here. I found this album under a vaporwave apple music playlist when I was about 8 years old, needless to say, I was hooked. I loved the dreamy feel I got when listening to this album. It has been 5 years since and I still use this album to go to sleep, when it rains, or for other special occasions. This album for me is just so.... addicting? I have no idea how to put it in words when I listen to it. Thank you HKE and telepath for an amazing album.
You listened to vaporwave when you were 8? You must have been a cool kid lol. But yeah, I totally agree that this album is addicting! I first heard it during the summer of 2018 when I was 15, and I still come back to it pretty often. Definitely a classic album!
@@confusedowl297 I discovered vaporwave in 2018, when I was 15 too. That year will always hold a special place for me because of this album and many other :)
It's 1AM. You're walking through the maze that is the city. All you have to keep you company is the warm glow of the neon lights and the cool embrace of the fog. You walk by a shop window which has TVs on display. Each of them shows a different memory of you and her. You sit on the hard concrete floor and watch until sunrise. It never comes.
Lol seriously who's the one acting edgy? "Astute these nuts"? But, I know I know, in your mind, it's not cringey because you're not being serious. Right...
I was in a life altering car wreck one rainy night in 2019, this album was playing in the background. It felt so calm. I didn’t realize the other car was hitting me until it was too late.
Vaporware has the fascinating ability to take your mind to places and times you never thought you could experience, and may never. It can take you forward, into the distant future. Humans have become a noble space faring civilisation, it transforms your feelings of doubtfulness as to the future of humanity into hopeful euphoric ones. It can take you back, most notably to the region of time where computation was just being commercialised, and a power like never before was placed into the hands of the people; we were just beginning our humble journey into the technological age. I am too young to have experienced this period fully but it strangely, still, invokes a sense of nostalgia.
I went on RUclips to listen to more vaporwave, hoping that it would take me somewhere distant from reality, like the Bahamas, but it took me to a ghost town in North Korea. Vaporwave hates me. Nobody loves me. I'm dead inside.
At the start of track 1 (recovery) I think she says: Why can't our relationship be the same as it was before Don't leave, stay here with me tonight (once upon a time/before)
21:01 It's midnight and there is not a single cloud in the sky. You are running in vast meadows, trying to run away from reality. You just keep running desperately. Then you suddenly stop. You want to disappear and pretend that nothing exists. You want to get lost in this universe. You slowly lay down on the grass and look up to see the black abyss filled with tiny twinkling lights. You wonder why there are so many of them, what makes them this mesmerizing. You close your eyes and listen to the calmly blowing wind. It's like a pleasant melody to your ears. You soon fall asleep. After a while, you wake up. It feels like you had been asleep for centuries. The sky is a light purple shade, now slowly turning into yellow with the rising sun. Birth of a new day. You stand up and walk through the meadows. To live another day.
In case anyone was wondering, since I was wondering too, The train that we're riding on at 6:30 is a south-bound Yamanote (山手線) headed for Kanda Station (神田駅), and then Tokyo Station (東京駅).
Welcome back to dreamland, everyone.
Thank goodness.

I finally decided to do the translation of the movie clip sample in the first track:
-----------
为什么我们不能像以前一样?
Why we cannot be like what we used to be?
不要走
Do not go.

Probably not, but hey you and I can enjoy it once again in this moment.

"I discovered a new vaporwave album!"
"Oh, nice! How is it called?"
"Hm... I don't know, it has a lot of japanese symbols"
"I see... How is the cover?"
"It's purple..."
"THIS DOES NOT HELP!"
Japanese phrase 新 し い 日 の 誕生 (in romanji Atarashī Ni ~ Tsu no tanjō), means "the birth of a new day"
I can tell this is a google translate attempt..
It is :
(あたらしい) (ひ) (たんじょう)
新しい日 の 誕生
"Atarashii hi no tanjyou"
Atarashii = new
hi = day
no = 「の」 particle (possessive)
tanjyou = birth
The English Subtitles in the Title
I believe the name of the group is 2814.

D.W this is what I am going through right now. How did u overcome it? I feel like somewhere alone the line I lost faith in everything and have no hope. I feel so claustrophobic in my body I just don’t want to feel this pain anymore. I am so sad.😢
@@rhondagustafson2684 my humble advice is to focus on the body first. good food and exercise. sounds too simple but it is effective. pilates or yoga to start with heavy exercise may be too much. it is amazing how much of our mental pain is anchored in the body. when the body is modified through gentle exercise a lot of what seemed like never ending negative thought-loops about the past or indeed fears of the future evaporate. meditation does work but it is hard to begin when feeling depressed. try ten minutes at a time to start. no need for lots of books about meditation just one really good one like
"The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science for Greater Mindfulness" by John Yates. It is practical and gives a good guide to what to expect and when. Then give it a go. Tune out negative news. You are free to choose what media diet you prefer. Love this comment.
Its an extremely pretty album, its in my top 5 favs for sure.

I know it isn't as much vaporwave, but if you want another ambient cyberpunk artist, then I highly recommend Noir Deco.
+CockatooDude love noir deco

/music plays
a cyber punk urban dreamscape. its the 80s or 90s, a nostalgia for pure possibility in things in a techno-digital overlay, even if it in a veil of misery and urban loathing. the city lights outside glimmering on a blue-black night sky, off in the distance the sounds and sirens of the city hymn. its like this music makes you long for a past that never was, because the future ahead seems so sterile, decadent and nihilistic.

"A nostalgia for possibility"
I like that. That's beautiful
thanks guys for the comments! im mostly a metalhead predominantly, but this type of music really brings me to other states of mind, it carries you off into sonic imaginations.
this music gives the most private and secret parts of your brain a soundtrack to grow to. it feeds that place where you live your second life, in the depths of your fantasies. about being someone else in some other environment, where things didn't go so horribly wrong and where it didn't seem like you weren't really present in your own life. you really felt that love, you felt that pain, that passion and all those moments when you felt that the world is only ever worth seeing in the places where you are not right now. that life is only ever worth living if it's not the one you have now. it's a painful paradox of expectation.
💜
Actually no for many of us it just reminds us of exactly the environment we live in and have grown up in - a crowded concrete jungle synthetic neon city. It isnt all fantasy to us.
Listened to this a couple weeks ago in Tokyo. Imagine exiting the subway on a rainy night at Shibuya station, walking through the crossing and around the surrounding area with this streaming into your head for a couple hours. It's an amazing place without this aesthetic overlaid.. but with it, and in particular this album, the experience is kinda spiritual.
That sounds awesome... I love having those kinds of experiences. When music, atmosphere, and soul just become "one". :)
Man you are one lucky person.
i also listened to this in Japan and had the same feeling.

i used to hate wanking in the rain
I used to hate spanking in the rain
I love walking in the rain

I used to rain walking in the hate.
Then this album discovered me.
This is a certified hood classic.
Tell your mom to take away computer privileges.
Penis and also dicke and balls
And one day you realize that there's a plenty of us who are alone. You break the invisible glass wall that stands between you and the others and you start to sabotage the machine.
"harsh geometric miscellany" I love it
The night train back from work.
I turn to the synth, and ask, "what is it to feel?" as such ability might not only be constrained to organic matter.
What a captivatingly esoteric scene you have painted. Seems to me as though it would be right at home within an animated film from the 80's or 90's...
Wow, it's amazing the pictures words can paint when combined with music. Your comment is a shining example of such a thing. Simply put: beautiful.
+timeparadox888 (silent approval)
I am not a great critic/analyst/commentator, but here goes my observations:
Hong Kong Express provides us with a dreamy voyage in the night city of Hong Kong.
+Xälos Jüryin Vërdah You are a better writer than a critic.
Jesus, that was a beautiful comment! Especially when reading it and listening to the album at the same time, it flows and you don't even need to think, you just feel. Wow, I didn't realise it's missing. What a pity, this is one of my favourite pieces from the album.
You're absolutely right, I only managed to rip 3 songs for my phone and sorrow was easily my favorite of the 3
This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever made, and I don't say that lightly.

***** I dunno, I think a translator program would be more likely to produce Engrish.
thapoint09 Well it's basically the other way around. The Japanese text is probably their equivalent to Engrish precisely because the artists did it English-to-Japanese in Google Translate. That's why it re-translates back into normal English without any quirks.
In my experience, though, it's that re-translation that produces the poor English. Or is there something I'm missing here?
thapoint09 It's essentially taking normal English and converting it into broken Japanese. The only reason why the possibly broken Japanese works when fed back into the translator is that the artists use like... one or two words at a time in many cases and very simple phrases in others. If it had to be a sentence the results would probably be ridiculous.
I see now. Makes sense.

I genuinely enjoy the vaporwave genre so much that I didn't even know that some people think it's just a meme. I think it's a new movement of art that is very much relevant for this day and age
I agree, although I think people take it more seriously now than they did a few years ago.

It's considered a meme?
In my personal opinion, I would say a lot of it is due to floral shoppe. A lot of effort was put into that album, and I love it dearly, but to a lot of people, the statue head and the japanese text and stuff made it look like a meme. Not to mention how the songs put people under the impression that vaporwave was just slowing down songs and making them skip around.
Great album but to the untrained eye and ear, I understand how some would be under that impression.
I don't know any of this for sure, this is just my theory.
Memes are a very prominent and important part of our modern culture anyway. It even has influence over politics

I mean, rock is a meme genre too
a number of genres will remain popular memes longer than this genre will
exactly!
Hope im ok the next time im here years from now..

Lol.
I fully agree with you, couldn’t have put it better. Got something futuristic, yet nostalgic to it.

It's midnight and there is not a single cloud in the sky.
