WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

We are so fucked. I know we are making tiny bits of progress, but oh my GOD it makes my head hurt that there are people like Helen who cancel my vote.

I'll watch these and a little part of me hopes these are trolls or paid actors but the truth is I don't have to walk 10 feet from my door to talk to these people face to face.
I don't think we're making progress. I see nothing to suggest that humans are getting any smarter, quite the opposite in fact. In the past, evolutionary pressure has favoured intelligence but here and now, I honestly believe that process has ended. This may well be the zenith of human enlightenment. I'm just grateful that there a few people about who can think reasonably straight and a few of them are in social positions where they can have an impact.
Fact is that on the whole, we're still just apes.

Too much to ask, but Helen might want to look up the Five Pillars of Islam: Declaration of Faith, Prayer, Almsgiving, Fasting and Pilgrimage. Three of them involve a sacrifice of at least time, resources, possibly health.
Yep, they're blowing themselves up all over the fucking place...
When you ask someone if slavery is immoral, and they don’t instantly say yes, that person is a lost cause...
Indeed. Waste of oxygen.
I'd argue they're not a lost cause unless they flat out say yes. The pause isn't a good thing, but the fact they have to think about it, even if a bullshit attempt to dance around the question, and don't say yesmeans they don't accept it. Imo, at least.
Good point.

"None of them are true except Christianity." That's a pretty thick bubble.
"It’s having someone else sacrifice for you." Which no one can actually do. Helen sounds exactly like my mother, an otherwise intelligent woman who blinded herself when it came to her "faith" and her desperate need to believe in it.
Mom never read scientific articles... or ANY materials that might challenge her or force her to think beyond self-imposed boundaries. She avoided adult discussions and was literally reduced to tears of frustration when people around her questioned religion.
She died 15 years ago, firmly convinced to the last breath that her ancestors "in heaven" were waiting to greet her with open arms. I'm sorry to learn there are still people like Mom, who keep their minds on a tight leash.
Poor Helen -- life isn't kind to the willfully ignorant.
@Kris Aaron , Did you just call Helen INTELLIGENT? Prove it...
@@CommonSenseGUY79 My MOTHER was the intelligent one, just gullible as hell when it came to something she wanted to believe.
My mom was the same way. She thought Covid was a hoax and that the blood of Christ would keep her alive. But in our last phone call, when she was suffocating to death from Covid, she wanted me to know her death wasn’t a suicide. She died on Christmas Eve. I felt relief bc she was no longer suffering and dying on Christmas Eve gave her some comfort. But I’ll always remember her death as totally preventable and rooted in fear and ignorance.
My mom is exactly the same as your mom, it pains me to tears, it has so negatively affected my family that we are completely dysfunctional, reading your comment just made me feel so frustrated at my own situation with my mom, because I know there's no hope for her, I know she's way beyond reasoning with, there's nothing I can do, it not fun to be an atheist because I am basically on the outside, looking into the transparent house of religion and seeing everybody ignoring the realities around them.
I know about a family who demanded that nurses and doctors dare not give their father a blood transfusion, their father died.
I know of a lady who refused to take medication because her church said theirs no greater healing than gods healing, she died.
How many more people are going to needlessly die like this before Christians find a way out of that transparent house of indoctrination they call their church?. This is so frustrating and sad.

The world is big and scary. It takes real courage to think and analyze reality, and learning new things is exhausting. Their lives are far easier with a make-believe deity to guide them and hold their hand(s) -- especially a deity that has all the answers.
To them, death only means seeing their beloved deity IN PERSON!!
Nobody can get them out of their fantasy except themselves. They get furious when argued with because they can't logically defend their beliefs and on some level realize the concept of "god" is irrational. They feel threatened by anyone who doesn't think the same way they do -- and fear is a big part of being religious.
It's sad when someone we love is sucked into this idiocy, but we can't help them escape -- they have to do it themselves.

@@gabrieljordan8015 Yes. I was brought up in a church every Sunday household, and even wanted to become a minister for a brief time in my adolescence. Many of my family members and ALL of the remaining ancients are firm believers in the resurrection of the God Jesus Christ to this day and will be until they die. I talk to very few of them about religion (usually the other non-believers), and if compelled to attend a service (funeral, wedding, etc) I join in because these are people I love & respect, and my atheism isn’t as important as my love for them. I understand where they’re coming from, and why they believe what they do. I find it easier to tolerate the faith of the ancients, and notice that many of the younger generations no longer attend services.
Generations of indoctrination are difficult to unlearn intellectually, and absolutely painful to unlearn emotionally. Giving up a crutch of belief that one has been told all one’s life one can rely on, isn’t a mere matter of listening to scientific reason. It takes deep introspection and a willingness to admit that a huge part of one’s life experience was based on lies. Who can honestly claim that should be easy to do? Unless they’re both intellectually and emotionally prepared to accept a vastly different world-view that includes being entirely personally responsible for one’s actions - forever! - the Helens of the world will continue to believe exactly as they do.
Matt's responses were so on point. Also, loved how we went from evolution to slavery in one quick sweep.
I started my science education as a Christian, wanting the religious claims to be true. The more I learned the less I saw nothing showed did just that. I had the preconceived notion that it was true. I recently wrote an article on Facebook explaining my reasons for why Satan is not an actual person, that Satan is a symbol of one's own ego. Christians didn't like that. They defended Satan's existence so they can point fingers away from themselves.
My family told me flat out that im not allowed to talk about atheism with them so much for freedom of speech
@@kindlerashod ironic isn't it how everything really relys on satan being real
Atheism allows you to acknowledge that there is NEVER any circumstance in which it is acceptable to own other people as property. Religion tells you it's okay if God allows it, and even gives you buying and selling tips.
If there were never another reason to reject religion, that one alone would be sufficient.
She is literally JUST preaching, wtf.
Dave's sighs are priceless.
Honestly, I was doing the same throughout the video. She had no common sense and is so disingenuous and emotional.
If heaven is true give me hell, I can't bare the thought of spending eternity with people like Helen.
"I was watching the documentary Expelled" whew, that's the definition of "off to a bad start".
@Warren Higgins Sure, Expelled raises some interesting questions, but it goes out of it's way to avoid giving the answers in order to promote ID.
“Expelled” should be expelled from the classification of “documentary.”
"Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart."
Is that my tricuspid valve or my mitral valve?
Might be at the Aorta.
It’s actually the grim reaper because those valves are blocked off lol.
in the bible heart represent soul, So it means your personality. .......therefore you're person as a being. But not only the manifestations of your personality but more deeply about the inner core of your'e personality that manifests your behaviour. Your inner pshyce in its deepest core. People dont understand original symbolic languages or hebrew as a real language as it is or its language culture.
It's Like when people joke about "Adam and Eve took a fruit from the "Tree" and they belive its physical.
But if you look in the symbolic pararells in the whole bible you will realize a Tree is a Soul as often jesus represented it as and also the rest of the bible. A Soul is ( Personality ---) Person). Adam & Eve (That represents humanity if you would look it up ) took from the Devil ( Aka Fallen Person that is a angel).
They didn't take the "Tree" ( Lucifer") They took from the fruits ( Manifestations from Lucifer) Etc. But those who are spiritualy blind or lacking knowledge in ancient languages or fail to see the bigger contexts they miss the points constantly and belive "They took from a physical tree and ate a physical fruit". Thats what happends when you dont understand hebrew from the foundation or have bad translations or lack of knowledge in symbolic representations or just lack of wisdom.
@@el29 Deuteronomy 4:29 mentions heart and soul as two separate things. That’s what’s great about the Bible is that people can make up whatever they want to make it say anything.
@@timterrell8678 No its when people dont get it, i have already said, the heart is the inner chamber of the soul. Its personality in its biggest deepest core, but its still Soul. , its not youre body or the Holy Spirit or Spirit. Go and make up some more false belives. Its not seperate its a duality of the same coin, ying and yang and Tao. Even if you call the sun rays seperate from the Sun it does not mean its not the Sun. They are 2 but they are 1. And youre last comment will stand for you. You know hebrew ?. You are just totaly wrong simple as that, they have never been seperated.
As far as Lucy is concerned, she's not the only specimen of Austrelopithecus Afarensis we've found. For us to find one specimen with these specific and predictable "deformities" would have been amazing considering how seldom things fossilize. But to find multiple specimen, with the exact same deformities in the exact same places is inconceivable. There's is no possibility that Lucy was a deformed human.
This is a great example of how religious beliefs can destroy a mind. So many circular arguments in such a short period of time.
Dave: can you prove that Harry Potter is not true?
Lady: fossils
🤣🤣🤣
Matt's response to the location of the garden of Eden was epic! I laughed out loud.
Me too hahahaha
The Mormons think it’s in fucking Missouri!
He told her the bible doesn't say Eden was in Mesopotamia, but he should have also said scientists don't either. They have evidence humans first appeared in Africa. He should have pointed out her apologists fooled her twice.
@@dennisbecraft1303 I believe the Buybull says that the garden of Eden was in Iraq, or somewhere around Iraq. It says where two rivers met, and I looked up the two rivers it mentioned, and they meet right around Iraq. I just went back and looked up the rivers again, it was the Tigris, and the Euphrates. The Buybull says it is where these two rivers come to head, or meet. So by the map in my Buybull that is Iraq.
@@jerrylong6238 The Bible mentions four rivers; Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel and Euphrates. This is very weak evidence this refers to the Iraqi Rivers, as it is plausible they are talking about completely different rivers because you must remember places had different names back then, aswell as the fact that there are no rivers called Pison or Gihon, just the other two.
Archie Bunker was wrong about almost everything, but even he would call this woman a dingbat.

“I’m going to call the atheist show who don’t take anything on faith and tell them that I take things on faith”. Such a productive thought through call! 🤣 “Helen, Helen, Helen, Helen…” reminded me of that voiceover animal bit by BBC ONE. Hilarious:)
I can’t believe that anyone could watch 5 minutes of Ben Stein’s propaganda and not see through it.
The phrase "preaching to the choir" comes to mind. It was made only to reinforce blind faith with pseudo-science.
Sadly I know way too many "Helens".
You will never get through to them. The incredible ignorance is truly impenetrable.
I agree. And sweet as sugar, dumb as a bag of hammers, but can sting like a wasp. Especially well entrenched in a community that expects you to be in church, etc. or inquiries as to what was wrong last Sunday, did you go to early services instead or were you sick? The night has a thousand eyes but so does the day, and those Helens tend to have a lot of support ( and fear).
The reason they deny evolution is because it hasn’t happened to them yet !
She has to be within the top 10 less intelligent callers in the history of the show.
Yep
10 seconds in: "Well I was watching the documentary Expelled..."
*grabs popcorn*
"How do we know lucy wasn't just a short woman with a deformity"
Because there was a whole population of lucys which implies they were all "defromed" in the same way due to their genetics. The very argument that she was a deformed human is an admission of bother common ancestry and evolution.
The “faith” argument is killing me. Why can’t we humans admit that sometimes we just don’t know and we need to learn more.
Because not knowing is somehow not allowed in religious circles, while a priced, and a perfect and the most valid answer an Atheist or scientist can answer. The truth is though, they don't know shit. What does "God did it" even mean? It's just a convoluted way of saying I don't know. But when that line doesn't fit, and when you consider religious people don't like being believed as ignorant, saying "I don't know" is a no no.
Because if they admit they don't actually know and confess that it might all actually be total bs they are terrified that they might lose a seat in the eternal retirement village in the sky.
Helen is unfixable.
I don't know, I think we can work with this. You're short on rent, tell Helen god told you that she should pay it. Boom, you're golden. Just think of all the applications. Helen is a very helpful person.
ix = uck
That's going to be a tough nut to crack. So many years of indoctrination she really doesn't know any better 😩
Even if she is unfixable, her call might help another theist question their beliefs.
This reminds me of the time Richard Dawkins had the frustrating conversation with Wendy Wright. I compare it to someone picking Gilbert Gottfried over Lebron James in a pickup basketball game.
I'm definitely picking Gilbert Gottfried
@@complexeddrummer great move
The day I nearly punched my laptop...... I never knew people like her existed.
I'd pay to see Gilbert Gottfried remove Wendy Wright's smile.
You're not allowed to mention Dawkins now. He's been excommunicated by American atheists, some of whom seem to have lost their way.
0:06 "I was watching the documentary 'Expelled,' [now let me tell you what is wrong with science--science being as foreign to me as Sanskrit is to the average Australian child."
She watched the “documentary” Expelled. That’s hilarious. She probably should go talk to an evolutionary biologist instead of watching propaganda or calling into an atheist talk show.
Remember that song from the 80's "You spin me right round baby right round, like a record baby, right round round round." Now I understand the inspiration for that song.
What needed to be fixed about Lucy? The only thing that was "doubtful" was her damaged pelvis. The reconstruction was warranted when they found all the other fossils including "little foot"
Yep and it's only becuase it's become a target. The rest of these idiots don't know we have multiple skeletons of Lucy's type but becuase it's become famous it becomes something they need to debunk to win, silly as that is.
The poor woman. She had NO idea what she was getting into when she called in. Assuming you have a "reasonable" Gotcha! argument doesn't make your argument reasonable. But it's fun learning new "facts" from these kind of people. Garden of Eden was in Mesopotamia. Hearts have doors. Religion can ONLY be true if there's a "saviour". My knowledge keeps expanding! 😁

Let's break down when Helen said "Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart." Jesus is inside my chest cavity? He's literally knocking with his hand? My heart has a door? Do I open the door for him? Will this kill me? What happens when he walks inside my heart? How big is Jesus?
She really called the movie "Expelled" a "documentary". That was NOT a documentary....it was a propaganda piece of garbage.
This woman was a great example of how my parents behaved and a major reason I no longer speak with them, as they allowed such drivel to be their basis for treating me as sub human once they realized I no longer shared their delusions.
Matts interogative questions are always so much more more insightful than most other hosts prepackaged responses.
I agree, Dave detracted from this conversation.
Fundagelicals. Great mash-up term. I'll be using that one from now on.

Looking back over my intellectual development that lead me to understand all religion is superstion, I must give credit to Matt and The Atheist Experience. Thank you and its a delight to occasionally watch an episode after all these years. Your work is appreciated far more than you probably realize.

What about Lucy? She’s not alone. Look up “Ardi”, another similar find, which is older and more complete.
Not to mention dozens of other fossils
Yeah I didn't know there was any disagreement about Lucy besides her age and cause of death.
Even if Science disagrees or is disputed. Science is willing to say "OK. We made a mistake. Here's the correction."

You would think that they would come up with better arguments, right?
Ever watch one of those car crash videos online and then watched it again to just how horrible it was. That is this show.
Australopithecus ( what Lucy was ) is not one single specimen. There are hundreds of them to examine... Lucy was no unique deformed example. She was a typical female Australopithecus.
The gotcha of "you would have given me a reasonable explanation if you had it," is as Rock solid as it seems, it's very simple and it's lethal.
"Lucy" is not the only example of her species. Several others which lived over East Africa over centuries have been found.
The dead silence after Dave expressed the Adam and Eve point was awesome.
she was looking up her notes ^^
Her entire argument comprises: 'but...but... muh magic sky wizard holy book....'
Hahaha "we are asking you to show that your beliefs are true and you are coming with absolutely nothing"
