It's funny that this mall changed so much from the 80s till now, hickory farms use to be there. Mc Donald's use to have a full sit down restaurant and so did Cinnabon. The food court use to look very ghetto in the 90s with a huge arcade. I do remember the bon water feature, the space between jc penny and were sears use to be was a water fountain in that circle. The first space leaving sears on the left use to be a small pet store my parents take us, my brother and i to see the pets they had. This mall is still thriving its sad basken and robins is closed now.

I remember that mall well. When the Sonics made the playoffs, I ran up the wrong way on the escalator to get those seats. Got them, I too remember the staircase that went to the bottom of the Bon Marche. I have not been there in 25 years. I now live near Kelso where the Three Rivers Mall is. The mall is in sad shape as far as occupancy but is always clean. Major stores are JCP, Sportsmans Warehouse, Planet Fitness and Regal Theaters. There are a few smaller local stores too. Of course, there is a Claires and Bath & Body Works. What I like best is they also have the Kelso Public Library inside the Mall. They also distribute from the Kelso Resource center here too.

Yeah, I wish there were more photos of that staircase, but that's it.
I did a video at Three Rivers Mall as well. Sad to see a nice place barely get used. I bet it was really happening in the 1990s.

Yes!! I remember the pillars. The mall is unrecognizable. On the left of the pillars right outside used to be a police station. As you walk in on the right used to be a shoe store. As a teenager attending Macilvgh Jr High a group of us skipped school on occasion to spend the entire day at the mall. Fun times!

The reason one part of the mall is empty except for Spencer's is that the end of that hallway used to be the opening to the Sears building...which was demolished to make room for a new Tacoma Mall Theater. It looks like more stores will be added to that area also. I miss the old Tacoma Mall theater..it will be nice when we have one back again. When we first moved here 40+ years ago that whole hallway wasn't there..It ended with the J.C. Penneys store. I also remember when mall walkers could enter the main mall hours before stores opened...it gave a safe dry place to walk especially for seniors...friends would meet over coffee after...the benches and live plants around the hallways gave walkers a chance to take a break. (those benches also gave husbands a place to wait while the wives shopped from one store to another) I'm hoping malls like this survive..after the lockdowns it is nice to have a place to go to.

Very nice video. A while ago I scoured the internet for a picture of the fountain by the stairs, only to come up empty. I was a child in the 80's and that fountain seemed so much larger back then, perhaps it's just the angle of the picture, or lack of plants as you mentioned. Thank you for documenting this historic landmark. Tacoma resident from 1978-1988.

the Sears wing you were a little off. The spot you said was Suncoast video was Finish Line. They relocated to the food court. The spot to the LEFT of that spot with the smaller black facade was where Suncoast was. To the right of that was a decades running little donut shop that closed down in the last few years

Lucky's became the Food Court. there was a Payless Drug on the other side of the walkway. Where ThinkGeek is now. There was an amazing fountain down those Bon Marche' stairs. It becomes a Christmas shop now every year(the little store in front of Macys). down by Sears there was a donut place and a puzzle store, not TOO long ago. I miss the fountain that sat in that circle by J C Penney.

I am surprised they let you take video in such a busy mall. If that was over here, the security cops would come by on their segways, throw you against the wall, search you and ban you for life for walking around with a camera. Maybe I am just remembering when I was 17.

Shame that they took the exterior pillars out. Looks so much different from the way I remember it. Those skylights really do ruin the overall design of the mall.
