@sweatingsmallstuffart Nah yours looks fantastic. I just meant if anyone wanted to try it out for themselves. (especially someone less experienced such as myself) Sorry I should've specified. 😅
Unique animation style, is an understatement. It was as, if whoever was hired to do it. Was still in h.s. and they offered the kid a small fee for it. So they could get away with making a low budget, TMNT movie. 🤣
@@sweatingsmallstuffart Nice one dude, you've inspired me to make a more accurate Super Fly too, wanted one for a while but never got to it. I think I'm gonna extend the torso a bit and add some eyelids too.
Donatello: *(screaming his lungs out in pain)* Leonardo: OH MY GOD! Oh my-I'm gonna be sick. Michaelangelo: Leo, what happened? Is Donnie bleeding? Raphael: *(from the background)* My bad my bad! It was an accident! Donatello: It's still in my leg! Leonardo: Mikey, watch out!!
I know, I still wish I could have made them work. I think with a little more finesse and materials, I could have gotten them to a place I was satisfied with, but ultimately think the clean look worked best for the overall figure.
honestly this video and all your others are so well made, after watching this video i was shocked when i saw you only had 629 ( 1 more now ;) ) subscribers! your gonna make it far on youtube and i cant wait for it to happen :)
Have you ever thought about printing out dioramas for figures? by the way, the figure looks amazing! love the detail and time spent on it. How does one learn how to do these things? sorry if i'm asking too much questions haha.
Hey, thanks so much! To answer your questions: I have definitely thought about designing and 3D-printing more intricate dios for my figures-I'll likely get more into that in future builds! As for how I learned this stuff, I've been customizing, sculpting, and painting since I was a kid but only recently picked it back up again this year after being inspired by the tons of amazing makers here on RUclips. I've learned a lot of new tricks just by watching their videos (North of the Border, Boylei Hobby Time, Studson Studio, and Nerdforge, just to name a few). Hope that helps!
Hey!! Ive been customizing my turtles too. Mine are no where near as good as yours but i was wondering what paint you used for the belts, fanny pack, and headphones? I've had trouble with my acrylic paint adhering.
Thanks! I used Apple Barrel acrylics for everything except the metal bits, which were painted with Vallejo Metal Color Silver. I had similar issues as you getting the paint to stick (especially on the sprue), but I found with enough coats-and the occasional blast from my heat gun-it would eventually adhere. Hope this helps!
Just curious of the measurement for the peg holes of the turtles. Wanted to make one so as to have a base like your turtles. Newbie here in customizing. Hope would be notice
Possibly, if I can come up with other fun scenes to recreate! BUT, I've already made custom stands for the other three brothers-more on those in a separate video, which I'll be posting in the next few days 😎
Thank you! I wouldn't recommend it, but in this case I baked the whole head in the oven. Since it was only in for about 10 minutes at 275 degrees, it wasn't enough to melt the plastic or create any fumes. That said, if/when I sculpt clay on plastic again, I'll probably just use my heat gun.
For some reason, my Donnie's fanny pack wasn't glued on (though the smartphone was glued into the fanny pack). However, I have run into the glue issue with the other Turtles' belts. My heat gun has helped in loosening things, but they've definitely sustained some damage in the process. Luckily, it's all in spots that can be covered up during reassembly. Hope this helps!
Thanks! It was actually a mixture of yellow, green, and brown. Ratio was maybe 4:1:1. I wanted to make Donnie's skin a little less neon green and more olive like the promo material, so I did a base of that and then drybrushed a little yellow-green (5:1ish) on top to give the base coat a little life. Hope this helps!
Yeah, there’s definitely glue to contend with on Don, Leo, and Mikey. I used a heat gun to securely remove Donnie’s gear, but I ended up ripping plastic on both Leo and Mikey’s belts. Luckily they were in spots that were covered up/unnoticeable upon reassembly. Hope this helps 👍
Thanks for the feedback! I've actually toyed with doing VO, but I also dig the "just vibes" format I've got going rn. However, maybe I'll try it in a future video!
@@sweatingsmallstuffart you’d be surprised how many people love Tom just hear you talk, even when you’re not talking about the project. Again you did a great job!
came from the leonardo video, subscribed, and went straight to the first one! quick question(s): how many layers of paint do you use, and how long do these usually take?
That's awesome to hear-thanks so much for your support!! Glad you dig the videos. As to your questions: I don't have a set number of layers, it kind of depends on the level of "depth" I'm going for and/or how well the plastic takes the paint. (For example, the sprues for whatever reason have a hard time taking paint, so I usually prime them first so the paint doesn't chip off.) Re: how long do these customs take-I really need to start keeping track in hours, but... a lot, haha. If I'm efficient, I can usually knock out one figure + accessories in 4-5 days, working a few hours a day, but... again, it kind of depends on how much additional sculpting/painting I'm doing. Hope this helps!
I actually hand-painted them! I realized there were tiny indentations in the staff where the stickers would go, so I just tried my best to color-match what was in the promo material based on those indentations.
Thanks for the feedback! I've actually toyed with doing VO, but I also dig the "just vibes" format I've got going rn. However, maybe I'll try it in a future video!

The cool thing about this customization is there's no need to be perfect. Any minor imperfections reflect the unique art style of the film

Just curious of the measurement for the peg holes of the turtles. Wanted to make one so as to have a base like your turtles. Newbie here in customizing. Hope would be notice
If memory serves, they were larger than most, I think like 4mm. Approximately, cuz the peg holes are angular, not round… Hope that helps!
