Primer is one of, if not THE best movies about time travel ever made. Written, directed, produced, edited and scored by Shane Carruth, it features mind-melting twists, turns, and loop-de-loos. But does the fact that it requires a plot diagram mean that it's a GOOD movie?

Riley, the part where abe walks back and forth to see if Aaron is out of the box they explain in the bit of dialogue right after it. Aaron is clearly in distress after exiting the box and abe says " you got out too early. You have to wait for the machine to cycle down" which means that Aaron got out too early from his perspective, but too late from the box's perspective. Which is why Aaron comes out a few minutes AFTER abe does.
I understand all those words seperately, just not together.
@@cokeMONSTERps3 Aaron is traveling backwards in time inside the box. So from his perspective passage of time is the opposite inside the box as it is outside of it. He exits "too early", as he hasn't gotten back in time enough yet. Abe waited longer inside the box, he traveled more backwards in time, so he got out in an earlier point in time compared to Aaron. So from outside of the box Abe has to wait for Aaron to exit the box, even though Aaron was inside the box for less amount of time, because he was too impatient, and exited too early.
@@FinBoyXD Oh! I got it then. Neat thank you.
Yeah there's several parts where these guys get a major plot point incorrect.
@@FinBoyXDi believe that Aron exiting too late from his perspective and too early from Abe's is the same thing, since the arrow of time is reversed for Aron. He didn't get out of the box too early because he got anxious, he got out too late.
This is one of my favourite movies, I've watched it 15 times at least and I'd rate it 10/10. Of course the time travel mechanism is interesting, but I also really like the the style of dialogue: it's full of people talking over each other, partially ignoring what the other just said, mixing multiple conversations, ..., it all felt very realistic to me. We're also dealing with unreliable narrators (from the point of view of the final timeline), eg. Abe is lying to Aaron (and us) from the very start of the time travel (he doesn't say anything about the failsafe boxes).
We don't get enough information about the party and Granger situation, and this mimics what the characters are going through: they're also don't know what's going on with all of the timelines, they explicitly say "it's unknowable" at some point. Of course the fact that they're also lying to each other (from the start!) doesn't help clear anything up.
Some small corrections:
09:45: At the end of the movie Aaron is definitely building a big box. Throughout the movie the walls of the boxes are covered in smaller cells, and he's just talking about putting in one of these cells every meter. As for the purpose, these boxes can be used as duplicators, if they're larger you can duplicate more stuff per trip. Another thing you could do is make multi-year trips (to take new technology back in time for example) which means you need long-term life support which takes up lots of space.
47:02 The scene where Abe is alone in "the box" and looks at his watch: He's not in the box at all, he just got out of his box and is now standing in the storage unit, which has 2 boxes inside of it. He's looking at his watch because he's worried Aaron is not going to come out of his own box in time, but then he suddenly comes out and all is well. So the storage unit is not the box, it just contains two smaller boxes. (this might also have caused the oxygen mask confusion: they don't wear them inside the storage unit but they do wear them in the actual boxes)
57:10: This is the first time they actually intentionally duplicate anything (by interfering with their past self that still has to get in the box), they don't know what will happen yet. They explicitly say this is a both an experiment and just because it's satisfying for Aaron.
An additional layer of complexity is that the viewer is not presented the "final" (or only?) timeline. I always felt more comfortable by assuming time is looped (we see different events at the party as they play out). And I always ret-conned the party and disarming of the ex as an already manipulated event. In my mind, the non-timetravel story is this: Aaron suspects Abe of trying to cheat him because he discovers the fail-safe box without understanding what it is. Rachel's ex kills her on Monday, resulting in close contact between Mr Granger and Aaron. Unaware of this trauma, Abe reveals time-travel to Aaron who realizes he can "rescue" Rachel and ingratiate himself to Mr Granger. The party invitation at the basket ball court did not happen in the original time-line and is Aarons way to save Rachel in front of witnesses and in a "controlled" environment. Because of whatever happens off-screen between Mr Granger and multiple Aarons, the audience witnesses the confusing events between Abe and Aaron culminating in a broken friendship and Aaron 2 on his way towards world domination 🙃
Fell asleep watching this new episode only to wake up right when Riley mentions my user name and starts talking about me. Can't quite describe how surreal it is to wake up to your TV talking about you. Thanks for the positive comments and the life altering experience lol
It's been years since I've seen Primer, but I remember thinking this was the most accurate time travel movie ever. Because if time travel was ever possible, there's no way humans would be able to fully comprehend wtf they're doing. It WOULD be a completely confusing paradoxical mess.
I think Primer's biggest strength is that it creates discussion amongst other people that have seen it. If i try to have conversations about the ins and outs of time travel with my friends they call me a nerd, but if i do so in the context of primer they're all into it.
I'd seen this movie dozens of times, but in preparation for this episode I added one more viewing....Oddly not as satisfying as I remember. Still the best time travel premise I've ever heard, which still makes it an invaluable entry in the lexicon of film.
I'm coming to the conclusion, James doesn't watch movies sober.
of course he doesn't. that's why he's often taking about watching "enhanced".
I presume this means stoned out of his mind?
I think David's just salty that the movie went over his head lol.
I believe Aaron explicitly says the whole party-gun thing in Primer was about making Aaron's a 'badass' in the eyes of his friends
Pretty much. Aaron really wanted to play the Hero
In reference to the Riley-Starship Troopers debacle, I don't necessarily believe that a director has the "responsibility" to make their message easily understood. However, they also can't fall back on the defense of "you just didn't like it because you didn't get it!" if they don't take the time and care to make their thematic elements more accessible.
We Still Don't Know Yet. An all time classic movie that hasn't been made yet.
It first go against characterisation, Aaron BECOMES less cautious after the betrayal from Abe.
He never trusts Abe after the very first time he knows Abe went back without telling him, effectively erasing a day of his life.
I made it 54 minutes into the movie before completely losing track. im very proud of that
Thank you David for being a chapocel icon !!! You've shown me that you don't need to feel shame for it or apologize to anyone for anything. Thanks!
18:33 James: ... She killed herself and herself and two kids...
You were thinking of Shutter Island there which also had Leo Di Caprio in lead 😂😂😂
This movie sounds like it would have worked better as a nice, tight 22min Phineas and Ferb episode
I would disagree that the movie is incomprehensible. It is definitely possible to understand all of what happens in one viewing. While it may require multiple viewings to fully understand it, that’s not really much of an issue when you consider the extremely short run time.
Wow, dude on the right totally missed the boat on how time travel in this movie works.
Yall should do predestination. It's got its problems but I enjoyed it much more then this
Cyberpunk edgerunners is great. But it is Japanese anime, definitely not western. Everyone should check it out for sure. Good stuff
The best way to enjoy this movie (and I enjoyed the shit out of it), watch a simple explainer before your first viewing. Sure, that means it's a flawed movie, but it helped me really really enjoy it.
Not to sound overly cynical about society at large, but I suspect the weird fascination with the true crime genre, in particular the content that idolizes the actual murderer/culprit, is because to an alarmingly large segment of people, it's cathartic in a way, and sort of as David says, people are identifying with the perp on a perverse level due to their own traumas and negative experiences with other people that leave them bitter and hurt/angry, and thus more prone to a "they got what's coming to them", anti-social attitude.
... Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
People are interested in extremes and rarities.
I agree with David. True crime is weird af.
Wait... so one Aaron went away?
Is that the Aaron who started building one every meter everywhere?
Would love for you guys to do Tropic Thunder!
None of you understand how the boxes work at all, which is the easiest part of the film to understand...
They don't understand the fundamentals.
I mean...
The "I haven't eaten since later this afternoon" joke is just so bloody obvious to understand and none of them get it.
Baffling.
Mister f bomb?? Who's the Mormon now?
David and Riley are literally wearing the same exact clothes as last episode “starship troopers” but it’s a different day because they talk about Riley in the comments of that video and James is wearing a different shirt but damn it’s just a mad coincidence
Good movie underrated asf
Can you do Edge of Tomorrow/ Live.Die.Repeat?
4 mins in and it got highlighted already! That was fast! I guess it's coming soon. 👀👀👀
one of my favorite films of all time
Yes me too.
If you're still looking for a movie to do next week. Do minority report. It's currently trending actually
I'd love to see more episodes about shows, Andor and Cyberpunk would both be great :D
you should do an episode on the rehearsal, its a series but its only 6 short episodes
James has mentioned it before, he’s a fan. Would be great if they covered Nathan For You and Rehearsal
Riley - When the blonde dude wakes up in the box alone and then the other guy appears a bit later, blonde dude chastises him for not waiting until the timer elapses, dark haired gets sick. This sets up that you can exit the box early, before you loop back fully to point A or whatever, but maybe you get sick? So you can't set up a box at time A, enter at time B, and depart then at some point between A and B - I think
Riley, I disagreed with you last week, but I just want to reassure you that I think you're a wonderful human being and you make me smile. That's all. Have a good week. :)
Don't even remember how i stumbled into watching this movie. but it definitely wrinkled my brain a bit😂😂
I think you guys could do Elvis (2022)
I disagree. Time Bandits is the best time travel movie. But this is a very good use of time travel in a movie.
Time bandits is glorious
Guess I shouldn't have expected 3 marvel fanboys to enjoy Primer lol. Good episode regardless.
Syed was not "Exonerated", there was no adjudication on his innocence or guilt which led to his release.
I recommend Athena for a discussion. It’s a pretty funny movie
Not a single rating greater than 7.5ish and yet the title calls it the greatest time travel movie ever…I guess the bar isn’t terribly high.
Some movies I'd like to see you guys cover:
Flashback (2011) - it's a bad movie but it's so bad it is actually kinda good in my opinion.
What Dreams May Come
One Hour Photo
The Final Cut
Those last three are all Robin Williams movies so maybe do them as part of a Robin Williams tribute month?
do TRON LEGACY FFS
Please do a review of shin Godzilla, it's a great and deeper take on Godzilla
Thank you David for saying what I've always thought but most people think I'm crazy for thinking. It's not good to glorify these evil killers. And to James point of only affecting a small amount of people for millions of entertainment, that's not quite true. Serial killers tend to want noteriety, if we make it mass entertainment it will just encourage more killers. More than that even if it is just a few people, it's still not ok to continue causing pain to victims just because lots of other people think it's fun. If anything that's a criticism of those millions that find real life suffering as entertainment.
Just googled the movie "we still don't know yet", I am upset with myself.
Wow, super late to the party, but here it is: I added this to my to-watch list, based uniquely on your podcast title. And as I was watching the movie, I wanted to stop watching so badly!! And now I'm 4 minutes in into the podcast, and you guys agree with it being a subpar movie... :( I love your podcasts tho, so I bet I'll enjoy this more than the movie. Here we go.
David! Edgerunners is animated by Studio Trigger! Not American, pretty legit amongst the weebs. They also did two eps of Star Wars Visions
Not a movie, but you should check out the show Future Man, it's funny and silly but does time travel really well!
The Thirteenth Floor is 9. for me and 11 12 63 TV series next!
I agree 100 percent with David on the Netflix true crime series points. It's immoral to pump these serial killer documentary out. So gross.
You guys should do Rush Hour! Classic
Rings of Power is kinda bad but I'm still diggin' it.
Do Donnie Darko next...
PLEASE review Don't Worry Darling
Triangle pulled Primer's plot/premise off in a less complicated way, and thus delivered a more engaging and entertaining film.
Triangle is incredibly underrated.
Spoilers bro
Do cyberpunk
Or watch Time Crime, unless you already have
Additionally, there is an argument to be made that Starship Troopers is inadvertently not a satire of fascism (as the director intended). Sargon of Assad makes a long argument about this if you care.
1:07:45 David and I are nearly on the same page here. I've been over true Crime stuff for well over a decade, as well as crime dramas. All it does is make people paranoid that they're constantly in mortal danger. It also serves as propaganda. Like, serial killers are actually SUPER rare, but if you watch true crime & crime drama every night of the week, no doubt you think they're all over the damn place. It doesn't stuff to your mind over time. Not to mention what he brings up here with the victim's family.
They are all over the damn place, it's just that the damn place is VERY big and there are LOTS of people in it.
Serial killer would say too many! 😂
I could barely follow that explanation
I only gave it a 5. :O/-
Not understanding and thus giving a very low rating. Classic.
4/10 😂😂😂
I came all the way from my favorite podcast app to say that the takes on true crime are boring, annoying, and stale. Also the energy with which they’re delivered really makes David look like a shrieking cancel kid which is sad because David normally has a decent progressive take on things without doing pop activism lol.
Your next movie should be Anti-trust! It's about a computer programmer working for an evil corporation.
One of their worst takes. Primer is such a fun movie
1:08:00 David's take on the disgusting consumption of exploitative true crime is absolutely correct. And to say that it's "affecting tens of people maybe, compared to the enjoyment of hundreds of thousands" is a reprehensibly thoughtless take (so much so I would have expected it from Riley). Those "tens of people" are the loved ones directly affected and tormented by the blatant exploitation of the murder and torture of their loved ones! It's the same reason the bodies at a fatal car crash are not displayed on the news. The loved ones shouldn't be exposed that. As for the "hundreds of thousands" who "enjoy" watching serial killings...let them get their kicks watching something else!!! Of course this shit desensitizes people. And now back to Riley's incomprehensibly idiotic take on Starship Troopers: He gives ZERO data to prove that the majority of viewers didn't understand it as satire. He just makes up a fantasy in his head where only HE gets it and the vast profanum vulgus of movie goers do not. You don't have to go to "film school" to realize it's about fascism. But oh, by the way, the film works on both levels: As an action movie that can be enjoyed solely as such, and as a satire. Nothing in Starship Troopers could have been as morally reprehensible as your dopey, grandstanding take on it.
Do Predestination!!!!
Bro since when Vettel started acting in movies?
I loved this movie
Terrible movie for pseuds
Oh my goodness! Such a good and confusing movie
Gangs of Wasseypur 1-2, Indian gangster movie, and one of the best in the world, do both parts in one video, its one single movie
Just watch eega you cowards
Second
EASILY the worst movie I have EVER watched in my entire life. Tried watching it twice, made it about halfway through before wanting to tears my eyes out of my head. I don't think I've seen a RUclips VIDEO worse than this "movie". It terrifies me that some people actually like this movie. You have to be a serial killer or something if you enjoy this movie.
One of the most overrated movie
It's not a classic movie or anything but it offers a lot to talk about.
That they managed to produce anything coherent on a budget
@@zerorig there is no special effect, there is like 4-5 location, the actors are bad and there is not tons of props
The director did almost everything himself
The budget is not impressive and the result are not shocking good for the bucks
The picture is not great, the colorimetrie is just straight awfull, the acting bad, sound design ok at best, the storytelling is the worst, the story is cool but as a fan of time travel, nothing really ground breaking, complexe is not equal to good especialy if you have experience in the matter
@@zerorig It's the worst movie I have EVER watched. I'm not joking or exaggerating either. It's literally the #1 worst movie. It's literally physically painful trying to sit through it.
