His death is also symbolic in the film: he falls physically from a great height, as his angelic nature fell to evil ways. He dies on one of his own technological items, a mechanical wheel, and as he sought to turn Middle-Earth into a more "modern" age, his own wheel turns and slides him into the drowning waters of his own ruined former base of power.

Frodo can stand against the Ring because he didn't got it with violence. Smeagol got it by murder so he was corrupted so quickly.
Also Bilbo doesn't feel the pain of its loss because he gave it up freely.

That shot of Gandalf sitting in mourning after Faramir's apparent ride to death is one of the most beautiful shots in all the movies. So symbolic of his long centuries of care and concern for the people of Middle-Earth, even down to individuals he tried to council and guide. Denethor called Faramir a "wizard's pupil" because in many ways Gandalf was a father figure to Faramir. Much like Aragorn, Gandalf formed a strong friendship with Faramir, and did indeed teach and guide him. He took Faramir's apparent death very deeply.
But he does not give in to despair like Saruman or Denethor. He mourns, then gets back to work to defend Minas Tirith and the world he cares so much for.

At 10:43, in the book, Gandalf tells Pippin, "But mark this! You have been saved, and all your friends too, mainly by good fortune, as it is called. You cannot count on it a second time. If he had questioned you, then and there, almost certainly you would have told all that you know, to the ruin of us all. But he was too eager. He did not want information only: he wanted YOU, quickly, so that he could deal with you in the Dark Tower, slowly."

At 32:00, Pippin is singing a version of a walking-song of Bilbo's. In the book, Denethor asks Pippin if he can sing, but he doesn't call for a song. Billy Boyd composed the tune over a weekend and recorded it the following Monday.

You forgot that Gollum thought that Frodo had betrayed and tricked him and Sméagol when he "let" (though he was forced to let them capture him or they'd kill him following the laws of Gondor) Faramir and his men capture Gollum at Henneth Annûn, that's why he plotted to use Shelob against the hobbits so he could finally get The Ring.

At 38:26, in the book Merry is given a lift to Minas Tirith by one "Dernhelm," whom Merry had previously seen when he was riding with Theoden while he was reviewing his troops: "But when they had come almost to the end of the line one looked up glancing keenly at the hobbit. A young man, Merry thought as he returned the glance, less in height and girth than most. He caught the glint of clear grey eyes, and then he shivered, for it came suddenly to him that it was the face of one without hope who goes in search of death." Merry doesn't discover the identity of "Dernhelm" until the climax of the battle.

As awesome as Sam is, loyal and brave, he has no idea of what Smeagol went thru or what Frodo is currently going thru. Frodo doesn't trust Smeagol, instead he hopes that Smeagol can be saved. That would mean that Frodo can also be saved, as Frodo is nearing the point where he is corrupted by the ring. Also, Sam is clueless as to how to reach Mt Doom, so they need Smeagol to get there in a timely manner.

At this point in the story, Denethor has already been influenced by Sauron's tricks. Using the Palantir in his possession, Denethor was led to believe there was no hope for Gondor, and Boromir's death was the final blow. He wasn't a bad man per se.

The Transformation of Smeagol to Gollum was the most traumatizing thing for me to see back then.
This movie is so epic but you can't deny the depressing mood of it. While the others were mystic and gave the feeling of an adventure, this one makes you feel like the world is ending.

Frodo isnt special. Both sam and bilbo wore the ring and resisted its lies and temptation. Especially Sam. Sméagol’s problem was that Sméagol was very shallow, self-centred, and not too bright. When deagol found the ring, Sméagol was obsessing over getting a birthday present. The ring, preying on his weakness, promised him his birthday present and ensnared him.
Denethor gets a very bad rap in this movie. There’s a very good - and very noble - reason why he has gone mad from despair. He has a palintir - the seeing stone - in the white tower and he has been contesting head to head against Sauron with it. And Sauron has defeated him with terrible visions of the fate of the city and faramir’s death. Those visions are so bad that he believes his actions to be a mercy. Thats also how he knew about Aragorn - Sauron showed him and poisoned his mind against Aragorn. That’s all left out in the movie, except for a hint when Gandalf arrives: ‘do you think the eyes of the White Tower are blind?’

  • @johan7170
    @johan7170 2 месяца назад

My understanding of why Denethor is mad is that he's been living right next to Mordor for many years and during all these years, Mordor toyed with Gondor, sending just enough troops to slowly gain ground even thought they could have overwhelmed them. So for decades Gondor fought but they were slowly loosing and the leaders uch as Denethor and Boromir knew that soon or lated, Mordor would overwhelm them, it droved Denethor mad.
That's also why Boromir was so eager to use the Ring against Sauron, he thought the Ring could overturn the war. (also, from the moment he saw it to the moment he died, the Ring played with Boromir's mind, telling him it was the only way to save Gondor and its people).

    • @glenroberts9831

As others have mentioned, Denethor had a palantir ( one of the seeing eye balls) through which Sauron influenced Denethor into believing there was no hope, just as Sauron influenced Saruman into the same despair. That is what drove him mad. This is also what Saruman was talking about when he told Gandalf that there was something rotten that Gandalf didn't know about.

At 23:29, the movie does Merry a disservice here. Hobbits are too small to ride horses, but in the book they ride ponies. The four hobbits ride ponies from the Shire to Bree.

Arwen has a point in sharing a life with the man she loves and having children, although Elrond is also correct in that Arwen will naturally for outlive Aragorn despite her decision. I should not comment on how their lives went after LOTR.
