Your upgrade is my old school, I'm 76.. This was patented here in Canada in the 60's and offered to your US manf. but nobody wanted to pay but opted till Presto Inc. let the patent run out recently. Now you know the rest of the story. Cheers from Canada.
I love that someone else got as excited as I did when they understood how that weight works. Used my wife's modern model for the same application like two months ago.
As you were unwrapping the weight, my wife was sitting here telling the screen what it was and how it worked. Needless to say she walked off talking to the air about younger generation being uhh lower IQ than the old days.

I caught myself saying "fucking beautiful" when that thread fit perfectly. I kinda want one of these now, but i think my instapot should do for now.
Luckily things were SAE back then. I discovered my hand-me-down great aunt's PC orifice worked with 1/2" National Pipe Thread on the day I converted it into a still! In fact I didn't need anything else. I found all the parts in my basement junk to convert it. I put everything in my freezer into a cooler and distilled some of my old wine into spirits using the freezer as my source of cooling (also eliminated the danger of explosion in the process!) the vapors back into white lightning AKA high proof ethanol.
Best of all the whole thing converted back into innocent parts in seconds should any authorities come knocking at the door.😅
That means we are getting more mushroom content soon
I don't have a pressure cooker so I haven't tried it yet. But I want to try to replicate bogwood using various woods bathed in red wine (or something else with lots of tannins) and heat and pressure, and see how long it takes to inject dark color into the wood at various temps and pressures. I don't even know if it's plausible, but it's an experiment.
Awesome man it looks perfect. I love vintage and antique everything haha my favorite folding chair fold up into a 2inch thick package and folds in a way I've never seen anywhere else. It's from the fifties made of wood in North Carolina. Love my old hand tools also.

Surprising - usually the tighter the hole, the sooner you blow off. BTW, you can pour cold water on a pressure cooker and the pressure drops fast.
Does not apply when using a pot as a pressure canner to preserve foods. Natural cool down (pressure drop) time is included in the processing guidelines for safe food canning. Plus, risk of food being pushed from the jars when pressure outside of the jars decreases too quickly.
@@oldtimerlee8820 he didn't say that to be used as a standard process, it was more of an emergency procedure to prevent a possible explosion, but thanks for pointing out not to use the food if you use the emergency pressure reducing procedure! 😁

That just brought me back to my youth. My mom’s Silex pressure cooker had that exact regulator on it. I have memories of hearing that hiss/rattle when she was using the pot. Hers only had a relief valve and that regulator...... except, shit, now I feel old........... I was like 10 (in 1967) when I remember it.

And this thing Hase also a weighted presure regulator, I weight it down some more with coins to get slightly higher pressure and more temperature, never had any contamination wat so ever. 😏
I’m not a squeamish sort, and hate to think I sound like a mother hen, but make sure the pressure relief works at its expected pressure. The pressure relief is designed around the material strength of the pot and lid.
@@oddjobbobb I made a static presure test, the thing hold up to 6 bar from our tap water.
And it's a modern pot with modern relief valve. And I life in Germany, you can't buy anything remotely dangerous here!

Your unit isn't supposed to be a pressure cooker I believe, rather it's an autoclave. The autoclave is supposed to run on a small amount of water and not boil dry, thus is designed not to vent once the set temp is reached. By replacing the manual vent with the weight, you also will be much more limited on your maximum working temperatures. You're blowing off before the designed minimum of 17psi for dry steam autoclaving (270F), let alone the maximum 22psi. Take a look at the manual for the All American 1941 for details.
Back in those days I believe the only difference between the pressure cookers and autoclaves was the pressure gauge they used and the emergency release spring. This one was set up for pressure canning at 5, 10, or 15 psi. But yes the old vent method certainly conserved water much more effeciently. But the trade off in ease of use and safety is worth it imo. I never use more than 15psi anyways
Pressure cookers and pressure canners have one thing in common: they allow the inner chamber to reach higher temperatures than boiled water.
The primary difference is you don’t generally use a pressure cooker for as long as you do a pressure canner (unless, maybe your pressure cooking a 10 lb roast). Also, you don’t release the pressure on a canner the way you do on a cooker.
A pressure canner can be used as an autoclave, as a steam autoclave is simply a large pressure canner (the real difference is the autoclave has steam pumped in under pressure, it doesn’t achieve the steam pressure by boiling water in the chamber). Again, once the pressure is reached (and that pressure’s attendant temperature) it must be held to ensure complete sterilization into the center of the “packs” in which the surgical instruments and what not are kept. There should be a couple inches of temperate sensitive tape to prove to the person who uses the pack that sterility was achieved.
Letting the canner run dry will just result in the contents of the canner burning. (A dry canner (or cooker) won’t explode. You need moisture in the chamber/pot to expand creating pressure.) If the weight stops jiggling even if your gauge shows the pressure of the weight, then your canner is dry and better short off the heat or you will(at best) burn the contents and at worst damage the pot.
Cut a 3/4”-1” thick plate of lexan. Add a port for a vacuum gauge and for connection to a vacuum pump and you have an excellent vacuum chamber. Oh, I forgot your seal is the tapered thing between pot and lid. You need to add a seal. Route a slot in the lexan to accept an o-ring. A skiff of olive oily on the rim of the pot and then you got a serviceable vacuum chamber.

Old really functional Things Are wonderful. But I think you should consider replacing the old pressure gauge. Pretty damn close can be very unfortunate with a pressure canner.

Btw when working on cars here in Norway where the roads are salted many months a year.
Getting a steel bolt out of aluminium is 10 times more difficult than in steel when it is corroded since Aluminium expands very much and doesn't loosen up as easy as rust when heated.
So it is very often bolts just break and must be redrilled, and suspension bushings of aluminium corroding around bolts must be cut out and replace the whole thing to take wheel alignment.
I HATE mixed metals. Always cost me much more time and customers money

It would be badass if u could add like a schrader valve or something and experimet with plaster anneling 3d prints to make them stronger mayb do an AR or glock lower (if u don't show the printing ur not violating youtubes rules they still might demonatize you but they shouldnt delete it atleast.)

In general pressure cookers are not much different than any other pressure unit, as long as you follow the guide lines / clean the release valves and replace if suspect issue, check pot for cracks / replace gaskets if going hard or shrunken if pot has any , they can last a life time , if looked after,

@@chasejdmartin an aluminum still is not a problem, not acidic. Using aluminum to ferment is a problem, acidic. But there are better ways to produce a still than destroying the “vintage” nature if this pressure canner.

My guess is that it gets tiring doing all the work to yield a pound of mushrooms (and they have really poor caloric value, like 100cal/lb). And chasing problems like contamination or bugs
But it looks like they taste good.
I don't think I did any more mushroom videos after this, you hit the nail on the head, they are a ton of work for very little reward and I got hit with trichoderma which started infecting just about every mushroom block I had. That being said I've really wanted to get back into it, it's a fun hobby
on the main channel? you have a second? NEVER use thread locker on aluminum, if anything you use anti-seize on it. What you should've used is something like PTFE/teflon tape. (though I don't know what temp that starts to melt)

The quality of HTR's wrenches is very high, I use mine often preferring it over my genuine King Dick's as it is bloody useful as an impromptu vice, thing to hold stuff for spraying or setting fire to, superb as a heat wick on lectronic boards and three years now of serious abuse has failed utterly to mark it, bend it or dent it even. Oh and I use mine as a socket key and I can whap it hard with a 4 pound club to shock stuff into moving and it just shrugs it off.
Before I forget, thanks for not posting 60fps. Any channel that is even remotely related to either science or tech, for some reason unfathomable to me, think they need ultra high bit rate 60fps video, even if it is just their face in the video. Or even worse, capture of low res NTSC video signals from a NES or something.

All American strongly suggest to use teflon tape prior to screwing in the parts. The black knobs are??? Maybe handles kinda sorta??
Teflon would certainly work too. I just used the loctite which will seal the threads all the same. Yes the black knobs are handles to lift he hot lid.
Nobody talks enough about 18650 batteries! my local tiny hardware stores just look at me funny when i show them my flashlight battery, and the big orange and blue stores are a waste of time. I cant wait until they start putting them in stuff like trail cams.

Can we talk about the hand grenades?
I had an idea take an argon cylinder, cut 5 inches off the bottom, weld a tight fitting sleeve in bottom portion protruding 1 inch, sweat one inch section into bottom of top part of tank with brazing rod, remove valve from tank and fill with 1 gallon of water plus one quart of gasoline, screw pipe plug into hole, stand upright pile wood around bottom light wood and RUN LIKE HELL. I love super heated steam explosions, the gasoline ignites at it's flash point and the extra heat produces the finish.
Teflon tape would be better for that since it will seal and you'll never have trouble removing it due to corrosion should you need to. Ask for mil spec, it's much thicker and much much easier to work with.
I keep a box of leather scraps below my vise for pieces like this. put the leather around it and clamp onto it with a vise grips and you won't damage or even mar your old parts.
I'm not sure if what you did is really worth the work. If you have an Aldi's nearby I bought a brand new self contained AC plug in PC for only $45 and I love it. (I previously had my great aunt's old stovetop one like yours until the seal went) I use it at least weekly. I mention it because if you want a solution you can set and forget it really this is *the walk away solution.* It's digital, basically a instapot as all the buttons on it are the same as the instapot. I made scalloped potatoes and pork chops in it last night. The meat just melts in your mouth. I made a whole frozen turkey and whole skin on potatoes today in it. It has been my favorite kitchen tool for months now. It does max out at 99 minutes but you can stop that any time and restart it so you shouldn't have any trouble doing the mushroom stuff. You really can't beat the Aldi's deals.... I am waiting on them having the li ion drills on sale again. I bought one in 2015 and its been good but I wore out the bearings putting an oversized drain cleaner on it.

Great video and great replacement... all my pressure cookers have that style regulator .. they are the mirro models... I trust this better than my instant pot (you never know the pressure) also you learn to listen for that jiggle while your in another room, you’ll know if something’s wrong
That's nice focus adjustment at 1:30 ish.... it gets great focus on the new part's threads and then "drifts" back to focus on the pot .... all nice and tidy.

I work on commercial pressure cookers that operate at 12-17PSI. Teflon tape (high temp variety) works well on threaded connections.
I have a pressure pot for which I don't have the weight. I've already calculated about how heavy it should be to get the pressure I want, but seeing this thing may revamp my design.
It did not occur to me that changing the hole size is an option. In hindsight, it is obvious.
I could of course make more weights, but if I could encorporate the same thing into one, it would be better; fewer things to keep track of.
I knew you had to have a pressure cooker. It's the mycologists best friend. I used to boil popcorn (standard popping corn) until it split. I would load in to mason jars with a needle-sized hole in the lid covered with 3M medical tape. I autoclaved those and they're FANTASTIC medium for inoculation. I ran a O3 generator in an old, clean bathroom, then inoculated jars through the 3M tape. Never lost one jar to anything more colorful than white mycelium.

15 psi?! Not high enough for canning. Maybe for your needs but when I grew up we had to be able to hit 30psi and then it stayed there for a short time and then lowered it to 22 to 25 psi till it done. Yeah 30 psi is scary LOL Would love to have that old pressure cooker myself. Simple weight / surface area and so easy and will last a long time( longer than us ).
15psi a fine pressure for canning its from a pressure canner LOL 15 psi is the standard autoclave pressure.. so i think if its fine for surgical equipment its fine for canning
Yeah I don't know what your talking about, 15psi is the standard pressure for all home canning operations. I think commercial operations may go up to 30, but even then that seems like alot.

Anyhow I was wondering would this work on one of those inductive stove tops that are supposed to be able to keep a very precise and steady heat? You might want to look into one of those. I've been thinking of getting one for melting sugar and potassium nitrate to make smoke bombs.
