In fact, this composition describes the birth-life-death cycle. In the beginning, the painful birth process, then the innocence of childhood and the speed and chaotic periods of youth, then the sadness of old age and finally the painful death as in the beginning. If you listen to the composition based on this philosophy, it sounds much more meaningful and draws you in.

He always say that “I am not an academic pianist.” He just does what he feels, if his feelings come out stronger than the rules, he just doesn’t care about rules. And I love that.

This is an epic cover of a simple but deep, amazing and captivating song by a blind folk artist Asik Veysel. The song is about life and death bound to the soil, the black earth. In summary, nobody but the black earth is the true love, by finding his origin, his life and his death returning to the source.

    The Lyric of Kara Toprak:
    Black Earth by Aşık Veysel
I embraced many, thinking they were friends
Black earth (is), my faithful beloved
I wandered in vain, got tired for nothing
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
I devoted myself to many beautiful ones
I neither saw faithfulness (in them) nor found any use
I took everything I wished for from the Earth
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
She gave me sheep, gave me lamb, gave milk
Gave food, gave bread, gave meat
When I didn't beat her up with pickaxe, she gave short
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
    She sheltered me since Adam
She fed me all sorts of fruits
She carried me on her surface everyday
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
I ripped her belly with pickaxe
I tore her face with my hands and nails
Yet, she greeted me with rose of hers
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
She laughed at me as I tortured her
There's no lie in this, everyone saw it
I gave her a single seed, she gave me four orchards
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
If I look up in the air, I take air
if I look down to the Earth, I take prayer
Where would i stay if I leave the Earth
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
If you have a wish, ask it to the God
To collect it, go no farther away from the Earth
The Earth has been blessed with generousity by the God
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
If you seek truth, here's a clear point:
The God is close to man, and man to the God
God's secret treasure is within the Earth
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
The Earth covers all of our faults
It recovers me, salving my wounds
It is waiting for my arrival with arms open wide
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved
Whoever is honored with this secret
She (or he) leaves an unfading legacy to this world
One day, she takes Veysel to her bosom
Black Earth (is), my faithful beloved

The piece was inspired by " Asik Veysel - Kara Toprak ( black earth ) " . "Asik" is a title "Veysel" was the musician's name. Asik means lover if you translate it but the meaning goes beyond that. Veysel was a blind musician who really put meaning, his heart and feelings both into his music and his lyrics. When Mr. Say was asked about it, he said that he didn't make a cover of Veysel's piece and explained that Veysel was an incredible man and he did something amazing to make us all feel what he is trying to say with his music and that he (Say) created this new piece putting together what he felt listenning to Veysel. Veysel's kara toprak and Say's kara toprak dont even really share much technically but you also hear that they are coming from the same place. Below another performance video this comment was pretty good at giving some perspective to those who don't know the history of these melodies..
    Listen it in this way,
First part is the time when you were born.
Second part is your youth and your first kiss, friends, family vacations, your wife, your kids as your best moments in your life.
And the third part is your last years before you arrive to the Black Earth.
Mr Say inspired by Veysel about this composition. Asik Veysel is the man of honor and art in Turkish history. He was a blind musician.
Once upon a time, he was married. His wife run away from him with another man. That night, when she left the place, she was walking outside and she was disturbed by something in her shoe. She took off her shoe and she found some money and a note.
It says; you embarrassed because I’m blind and poor. But without my love, you are nothing. Nobody will love you like me. Keep this money for your future, wish you wonderful life my love. by Veysel
After this difficult situation, he created his legendary composition called I am on a long and slim road. (black earth)
    He says ;
My loyal partner is the black earth. I do many things in my life and I’m tired. But my loyal partner is the Black Earth. ( this bit is oversimplified by the user but yeah in his lyrics he is explaining that he called many his friends, he thought beauty was in this or that, he did this he did that but in the end the black earth turned out to be his only loyal partner. )

This piece is dedicated to Aşık Veysel.
"Black earth" is a poem of Aşık Veysel. He was a philosopher. His poems have very deep meanings. Here is a sample:
Black Earth / or Black Soil
I expected for many people to be real friends
My faithfull beloved is black soil
i wandered arround with no end, i got tired for nothing
My faithfull beloved is black soil

I dedicated myself for such beautiful ones
I didnt see any loyalty, i didnt find any use
I had everything i want from the soil/earth
My faithfull beloved is black soil

It gave sheep, it gave lamb, it gave milk
ıt gave food, it gave bread, it gave meat
When you didnt peck up the ground, it gave less
My faithfull beloved is black soil

It let my breed come to today till Adam
    It feeded me with fruits
ıt carried me on his top everyday
My faithfull beloved is black soil

I cut it open with pickaxe,*
I tore its face with my hands, nails
It again welcomed me with roses
My faithfull beloved is black soil

As i tortured, it used to smile at me
There is no lie in this, everyone saw it
I gave one seed, it gave me four fields inreturn
My faithfull beloved is black soil

If i look up in the sky, i breath
If i look down to the earth, i have others prays
Where will i stay if i leave it
My faithfull beloved is black soil

If you have a wish ask it from God (pray)
Dont go away from the soil to have it (your wish)
Generosity is given to the soil by God
My faithfull beloved is black soil

If you search for truth, here is a clear point
God is close to people, people are close to God
The secret treasure of the God is in soil
My faithfull beloved is black soil

Soil is recovering all the faults we have
It heals my wounds as a medicine
It is waiting me with open arms
My faithfull beloved is black soil

    Whom ever learns this secret
She/he leaves an immortal wonder behind for the world
A day comes when it hugs Veysel deeply
My faithfull beloved is black soil

*There are many singers in this world. There are few who not only sing a song but also tell it at the same time. Anyone can read the lyrics of a song, but the art of touching people's hearts by telling them is the true art of a singer. This is very pronounced here in Turkey, because the people who write these texts also lived and experienced it that way. They actually write their own stories into their songs.*

The actual song (since this is a cover) is played with "bağlama" a Turkish string insturment; a "long-necked Tanbur" basically. He is trying to emulate that feeling and sound here. So, of course the song has "Anatolian" motifs I believe which makes it quite unique to most piano listeners since Anatolia has never been associated with "classical music" throughout history. Not totally middle-eastern either.Of course he adds his quite unique own flair to the piece too.

Why are you giving people false information? Just as there is no such thing as a Turkish-style piano, how many pianists have you seen playing this style in Turkey?
