    In addition to these, I always carry a whistle in case of emergencies. Chances are higher that someone hears that instead of screaming out your lungs

    This is a really good video! I’ve been in the outdoors, mountains etc a lot, former army ranger, and have to say that your attitude, calm and sensible, and the experienced based advice you give is quite perfect. He he especially re the socks, it’s hard to have too many socks... I’m sincerely looking forward to watching the videos you release. Happy hiking! ☀️⛰

    Glad to see map and compass in there. Absolutely essential kit. Really not hard to use. Make sure everything is in waterproof bags. A wet warm layer doesn't keep you very warm.

    Definitely adding a whistle to the list is I believe essential. I also carry an emergency bivvy, SOL do one that is the size of an apple but could save your life & much better than a blanket which can be useless if it’s windy. GREAT tips as ever from you Grace. #happyhiking

    Mostly agree with the list , the only area of question would be the trainers. If rains they re useless so hiking boots or trail runners yes, trainers, no. Love your vlogs by the way. You have a lot of courage, way more than me!

    This is a very nice, straightforward, helpful video. All I would add for a hike is a headlamp or flashlight.

    Good tips & video
    Equipment essential on day hikes of any type (the goal is warmth & rescue, based on PLAN-M & historical rescue cases), which so many folk omit - emergency shelter, headtorch, basic fire starting, multitool, cordage / tape & repair kit, toilet, signalling, decent first aid kit (including for bleeding, pain relief, tics, & sprains). Walking poles have many uses too (aside the obvious). Always plan for an unexpected night out - don't get caught out.

    Don’t forget a slug (emergency bivi) much better than a foil blanket keep that for the Chrimbo Turkey. Bright orange get in and you will be warm if things go badly wrong or who you may find.

    For a first aid kit on day hikes you can put together yourself a small 'Altoids tin' first aid kit , quite handy and you won't even know you have it. Footwear is truly up to ones personal preference...but unless it is terribly cold I typically wear trail runners. If I fear wetness then I am more inclined to wear or take waterproof socks. Waterproof shoes or boots tend to be too hot for my liking (of course winter and snow being a different situation). But I don't deal w/either much where I reside. Great tips..

    Very useful video Grace. I went for a hike yesterday up Lynn Fan Fach and followed your advice on packing from your solo hiking video, really useful and I felt definitely prepared. I'd really like you to do a video on tips/equipment you'd recommend for wild camping.

    Insect repellent (E.g. Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft) and a Tick Remover are also in my pack. Personal preference regarding socks, I usually do carry a spare pair but I always wear moisture wicking socks because in Scotland it's pretty much impossible to avoid wet feet.
    Obviously depends on the weather, where you are and how far you are from bail out options what are essentials though.

    Been following your channel for a while now and it’s something me, my wife and daughter want to take up. We’re close to the Malvern Hills which I know you have done before, would you recommend that as a starter hike? My daughter is 10 years old so we don’t want anything too strenuous 😂 keep up the great content!!

    • @GracesAdventures
      @GracesAdventures  3 года назад +4

      Aww that’s great to hear. Yes I’d recommend the Malvern Hills as a fab first hike, park at Beacon Road carpark and head straight up from there. Also Cleeve Hill, Leckhampton Hill and Clent Hills are nice easy ones which hopefully your daughter would enjoy. And if you want to tackle your first mountain some day, go do Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons 😊 hope that helps!

  • @Scoupe400

    Hi. What footwear are those trainers?
    I hate boots and I must say I really dislike things like Merrel hiking shoes with a hard Vibram sole - a stiff sole is one thing, but the lack of padding/cushion gives me tonnes of pain at the end of a walk, as if I’ve walked bare foot.
    Has everything switched to waterproof things like gore Tex opposed to suede or leather?
    I’ve looked at going back to regular trainers - but they all seem to be fashion naff, or extreme running thin things with flimsy fabric toe ends etc.
    No idea where to look.
    Thanks.

    Q. What Boots do you recommend ?

    • @phillvallace
      @phillvallace 3 года назад

      A good pair, might cost a bit but your feet will thank you after. You really have to try them on as every one has different feet & what works for one mightn't for another. If your just doing a day hike with a light bag, you can easily get away with a lighter trail shoe

    Don’t forget electrolytes on hot sunny days you loose through sweating. Plenty of good brands around. Nothing new on hike day though you don’t want GI 💩 issues

  • @colinmumford267

    I honestly wouldn't recommend trainers just my personal opinion ,has to be walkin boots at all times with ankle support especially with the difference in underfood conditions waterproof walking boots 100% for me me but rest brilliant vid , as someone stated a whistle is brilliant ,and you can by warm bags now as if anything happens to you this will be essential , also walkin poles they are a god send especially coming down takes all the strain off your hips knees and ankles superb things to use

  • @phillvallace

      Water proof shoes can be horrible once they get wet as they don't dry, in a boot it's more useful but I wont be getting another pair of water proof trail shoes

    #Walkingfriend? Just found you on RUclips- #newSub I've been getting into solo walks/ hikes and loving it. But also looking to find some people that would be up for either walking together / camping together or solo walks and meeting up for a wild camp. I live mostly in the midlands but will be moving near Leeds. I'm happy to walk pretty much anywhere where there are some awesome views. Average fitness, maybe slowish walker but that's improving. If you would be interested I'd love to make a group of WhatsApp group so we can contact each other and see if anyone available? #Uk #NationalparkWalking
