you forget the Copa America. Like every big tournament you don't see much from Messi. One penalty goal in all games, early red card in the game for third place. He never win a big title with his national team. The last big title for Argentina was 1993, Messi was 6 years old at this time. That's the reason why he never will be the best player of all time. I think Messi does deserve it more than Van Dijk. We know that Liverpool improved defensively when VVD started playing, but you also have to consider that it was at the same time that Alisson, Fabinho and Robertson also started playing.

I’m a Liverpool fan and while I love VVD and how great he was last season, Messi’s numbers were once again just insane. It is hard to compare them both when they had such big impacts on their teams for a whole year in very different ways, but I have to admit Messi deserves this, in fact he’s deserved the Ballon Dor at least 1-2 times since 2015 too. Barca is literally nothing without him, he pushes them in the league and in Europe and keeps Valverdes job safe.

Messi is an attacking player, that's his job; score goals and create opportunities for goals. So we can't necessarily draw that as a yardstick to compare them. If Virgil left his position all season to score 51 goals, his department will suffer.

Watching each single game of Barca last season, i say that Barca, one of the most famous clubs in the world, would be an average team without Messi. Liverpool is a different story. Even if Van Dijk were the best defender in the world, which is just a hythothesis, Liverpool could NOT win anything without Mane, Salah and Firmino. The proof is they are in the short list for the award. Therefore, Messi definitely made a huge impact on his team much more than Dijk did to his team. Messi deserves the award, obviously.

Noboby deserves it more than Messi. It's ridiculous that a team trophy has become so important when judging what is an individual accolade. Van Dijk was great last season but Messi carried Barca time and again, where as Liverpool's success is much more of a team effort, especially as Van Dijk is reliant on all the defensive players around him performing and his attacking teammates goals. Without that, there would have been no comeback and therefore, CL win. The same goes for Liverpool topping the premiership this season so far, particularly as he's been part of a defence that has struggled to keep a clean sheet, with him making a fair few mistakes. Meanwhile, Messi was out through injury this season, Barca fell behind in the table, and now are again top, mainly thanks to him being the difference.
And in regards to that Liverpool tie, Messi was the main reason for Barca's first leg lead. He did more than his part in the first leg and it was up to his defensive teammates to do their job in the second leg and they failed. He can't be blamed for that, especially as he was also one of the top rated players in the second leg, and created 3 chances too, two of which should have really been taken by Coutinho and Suarez. Indivdiually, he was better than everyone. 51 goals last season, 19 assists, 58 direct goal contributions for the year, won the golden shoe, was CL top scorer and voted best forward and won his domestic league... I’m a Liverpool fan and while I love VVD and how great he was last season, Messi’s numbers were once again just insane. It is hard to compare them both when they had such big impacts on their teams for a whole year in very different ways, but I have to admit Messi deserves this, in fact he’s deserved the Ballon Dor at least 1-2 times since 2015 too. Barca is literally nothing without him, he pushes them in the league and in Europe and keeps Valverdes job safe.

People are missing the point here, if the ballon d'or is for a team award, than you give it to Liverpool. If the Ballon d'or is an individual award then its no comparison Messi by a distance he has been doing it for 10 years plus. You penalize a player for being consistent? Salah, was one of the top scorer in one season aswell, did he do it season after season NO, so therefore its not easy to do what Messi is doing day in a day out. He saves his team, he scores, he comes back, he plays as a mid, what more do you want. Even giving to Modric is a disgrace just because they wanted to give to someone different. Probably they will give it to Van again, watch and see.

I'm not a Barcelona fan but let's be honest, as good as Virgil was this season, Messi was overall the best individual performer. Collectively, Liverpool were able to achieve the Champions League because of Allisson, Robertson, Van Djik, Trent Alexander Arnold, Origi, Salah, Firmino, and Mané and Klopp which makes the fact that Messi pretty much single handedly carried Barcelona under a manager like Valverde, far more impressive, winning Champions League player of the week back to back to back by delivering amazing performances.
