      I worry about it because it is very easy to get the opposite message across. It may be a life/death misunderstanding in emergency situations. I always have to ask for clarification, the supposedly short cuts end up wasting time.

    For those still struggling: If the sentence ends with can/can’t, then you should pronounce the “a” vowel normally for both and hold on the “n” sound longer for can’t. If can/can’t is in the middle of a sentence, then for can you say “k’n” and for can’t you say “can’t” with that abrupt stop she was talking about. We never shrink the word “can’t” to “k’n’t”

    In real life and at normal/fast conversation speeds I find myself always putting a "yes" or a "no" before "I can/can't" ("Yes I can", or "No I can't") and then I pronounce 'can' and 'can't' exactly the same :)
    Maybe that's why Obama's campaign slogan was "Yes we can" instead of just a "We can"

    I LOVE how organized and categorized her (your?) ideas are!! I think it's great how she talks about the difference of the sound of the vowels (the subtle difference of the "a" in both words)- and the difference in the last sound of that "invisible"/ellusive "t". I also LOVED the fact that she brought up the function of the word "can", which means that "can" is there to be of service to the other verb- whereas "can't" has more "protagonism" (so to speak) in the sentence. In other words, in the case of "Can't", "can't" is the purpose of the sentence. "Can" on the other hand is just a means to an end. Those differences helped me understand the different "personalities" of the two words.
    BUT
    I still "can't" pronounce them well 🤣🤣
    I'm hoping that this renewed understanding will help my pronunciation.
    Awesome video, though!!

    Generally "can" will be shortened to "kin" or "kn" while "can't" is always pronounced with a drawn-out a sound, like "can" is when it is said alone. So: "Kin you see it?", and "I caan see it". The plain "can" version would be "I kin see it".

    As an native American English speaker I didn’t realize I did this but it’s true. However can’t doesn’t sound as close to can as in this video. Though they do sound super similar. Though it completely depends on the speaker so you will hear people say “You can or you can’t?” And they will stress the “T” if they couldn’t hear right. So I wouldn’t worry about the difference at all tbh.

    2/ can't pronounced as /kæn/ in " Sorry, I can't do it", bcz /t/ between two consonants /n/ and /d/ ==> drop /t/
    3/ " I can't understand". drop /t/ and link /n/ with / ˌʌndərˈstænd/

    Even though you say that "can't" is usually short while "can" is either compressed or long, there are cases when "can't" is also long (stretched out). I think intonation also plays a role here. The word "can't" is usually with a downward intonation, while "can" is with an upward intonation (when emphasized).

    That doesn't work in Taiwan. For the past 26 years, Taiwanese have told me that "can" is pronounced "k'n," as you said; and that "can't" is pronounced "can." They're clearly saying, "I can do it;" and, when I get to wondering what they mean, I rephrase the question to, "Are you able to do it?" This is especially confusing when you consider that there are actually two ways to pronounce the word "can." The common pronunciation is "k'n," and the emphatic pronunciation is "can." (Just as Southerners have two ways of pronouncing the word "right," depending on whether we're being emphatic. The emphatic "right" is closer to Standard American.) For second-language speakers, it's much less confusing to pronounce the "t" in "can't." P.S. In the South, "can" can be pronounced "k'n" (common) or "can" (emphatic); and can't is pronounced "cain't" to rhyme with "ain't." That's much clearer and easier to learn.

    Hi Teacher, First off Thanks for this amazing channel. We get to get rid of our dilemmas because of you guys. Can you please tell me how can't is pronounced before words starting with a vowel sound? Is it "I can(d) open this" or "I can' open this" 3 . I mean does t get dropped altogether or it's a sort of a (nasalized) flap as far as everyday speech is concerned. I have no problem distinguishing can and can't when I listen to native speakers.

      Alain Díaz just think of it as having NO vowel when you say can, and a normal letter a vowel when you say can’t. [I’k’n do it] versus [I can’(t) do it]

    Hey there! I'm pretty sure "can" isn't pronounced with an a as in cat (/kæn/) in North American English. Most of the times, it gets diphthongized to /keən/, which is what you're doing at 0:40. This usually happens when there's an /æ/ before a nasal consonant. There's a relevant Wikipedia article here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki//%C3%A6/_raising
