Water sleeve for my strap so I can reach my water bottle easier. I also recently got a hydration hose adapter from Etsy for my nalgenes which I’m really looking forward to using bc I don’t always use smart water type bottles. And trail runners for summer hiking.
2:30 I bought one of those tiny pocket-sized umbrellas about ten years ago (about three years before life’s complications made backpacking impossible for a few years) it worked great, it folded up very compact and kept the rain off my upper body and backpack. It was perfect for those drizzly days. I am just now trying to get back into backpacking and I found one of those pocket-sized umbrellas at a thrift store for $1.99! I’m excited to get back out there and backpack again.
6:27 I’ve been using the same four regular “disposable” zip-top bags for the last at least year, to pack oatmeal and sandwiches to work with me everyday. So when I went backpacking the other day, naturally, I used it. Some so-called disposable stuff is a lot more durable than we give it credit for.
Nice list. Here's some random items.. Rain jacket with pit zips. It has become essential for drying out the inner layers. Dirty girl gaiters. Keeps dirt and rocks out. Boulder Salt. Cheap electrolytes.
I love your tips and use some of these. So glad when I started using walking poles, too. Also, your sweater is beautiful! You did such an amazing job! 🥰💗
As someone who live in a country where wind is extremely common a umbrella would never work for me😅 but I would recommend recommend a baseball cap for anyone who can’t bring an umbrella but want the rain (or sun) out of their face. I love wool clothes. About 80% of my hiking clothes are made out of wool. It’s great for keeping you warm even I you get wet. Trekking poles are gold. I bought one pair for my latest hike and it was gold when I had to get across streams and smaller rivers and needed that extra stability. I have heard a few people talk about the microbial cloth at this point. I’m very tempted to try it but also very skeptical. Have a great day!
I knew absolutely nothing about knitting when I started back in January and now I'm obsessed! It's such a fun hobby. There are a lot of resources here on RUclips!
Trustee trekking poles! Thanks to you I bought a pair a few months ago and just yesterday I hiked timpanogos and I could have NOT done it without 2:34 them
Thank you!! I watched a lot of RUclips videos on knitting 😂 It was so much fun to make! I'm definitely hooked and already on the yoke of Nicks sweater!
I also use a sittingpad(it is actually a gardening kneepad) as a doormat in my tent. When I'm throwing stuff in, need to quickly get something from my tent and the ground is wet I can use it for my knees.
My umbrella has been a godsend! I had someone stop me on my last trip to inquire about mine. I guess he lived in Mojave, and I was like, You'll definitely be happy with one of these!! I LOVE it when the sun is at my face and my hood doesn't protect me like it does from my backside. To that end, sun gloves have been wonderful. My hands are happier on my trekking poles, and I don't have to worry about remembering to put sunscreen on the backs of my hands.
I started using a bidet cap for a water bottle, and found the Kula cloth was great for cleanup afterwards. Been using both trekking poles and an umbrella for a loooong time now.
Umbrellas are mind-blowingly underrated. I've brought the same mini travel umbrella to (11?) Different countries in my backpack and it's always SO much better than being the idiot in an emergency rain ponchos lol
Calling them an idiot is a little harsh. I have the Six Moon umbrella and it's great most of the time. You know when it's not great? When the rain is coming at your sideways like it often does in the south. Then you'll be wishing you had some form of rain gear that covered your pants. Even an emergency poncho, which typically go down to the shins, provide some protection that an umbrella won't.
U will use an umbrella when it is raining and that is when I need both my trekking poles to stay safe on slippery trails I feel having those two poles are really more important and having a good rain jacket can keep u dry and protect from winds in cold weather and at higher altitudes. If it is windy and at higher reaches it usually is then carrying an umbrella is more of a downer
Brag on about your sweater! I can only do squares and rectangles! I won’t hike wo my trekking poles! They save me especially when I start to get tired and have kept me from tripping numerous times. Making it through an arduous hike and not getting injured is A+. One time I used my pole to retrieve someone’s empty water bottle left on a rocky ledge by jabbing it like one of those clean up sticks. They even helped w LNT!! How to use them correctly is an issue too. I was recently on a technical hike w lots of wet rocks and challenging trail. I saw a few people using their poles w the rubber tips on. One person was resting near me so I had a chance to show him how to remove the rubber tip and use the pokey tips in such conditions to grip the rocks. He had no idea.
I broke down and bought a pair this spring and found that they get in the way more than they help. After trying to use them a few times I left them leaning against a sign at a trailhead. I hope their new owner likes them more than I did.
You need to get an umbrella clamp for your umbrella. Gossamer Gear or Garage Grown Gear sells them for under $10. They are special clamps that go on your backpack strap or daypack that will hold your umbrella in place for you so you can be hands free or use your trekking poles.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your new finds with us. I have the pee cloth and love it as well. In this video, you mentioned that you got some of the resealable bags at Sierra Trading Post. I was at my local STP recently and was lucky to find the Klymit Drift pillow, sized large on clearance for $15!! I did not hesitate in purchasing it! I live in Northwestern New Jersey and I'm going on my first car camping trip (since my college days) in a few weeks. I'm super excited and have been planning for this since the beginning of the year (purchasing gear, doing a ton of research and watching a lot of your videos!) I wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and dedication to what you put on your videos. I've learned so much from your content and I've gained the confidence I needed just by watching and learning from you so thanks again! 😊
You're so welcome! I'm glad that the videos have been helpful and that you're going camping!! It's going to be awesome, and that pillow is a good find! I love walking around Sierra. You can find some really good deals in there. Keep me posted on how the camping trip goes! 🤗
@@amanda.outside Thanks for replying! Next weekend I'm checking out a different Sierra location with a friend to see what I can find lol. I will definitely keep you posted on my camping trip! 🏕️
Great job on the sweater! New sub here. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Im still on the fence abiut the pee cloth, though. Still need TP when you go #2 💩
Love my Kula cloth, and have been considering an umbrella for a while... good pointers here. Do you know if you can cook in the reusable bags? Seem like a good alternative to the thicker Stasher bags. TIA
I can wear wool, except for socks and they’re 80% wool, too itchy but I got me an alpaca poncho, so soft and warm and I can drape it on top of my sleeping bag if needed.
If you search Palatsineule on Ravelry you should find the pattern. It's by the designer Heli Nikula. She has so many awesome patterns with Alafosslopi yarn!
I thought this channel was going to have hacks to save money. Everything I see are new and creative ways to spend a couple of hundreds of bucks at amazon. A pee cloth for $20?. I carry plenty of tissue packs. sorry not for me.
What are some of the hiking items you wish you bought sooner? Comment below! 💚
Water sleeve for my strap so I can reach my water bottle easier. I also recently got a hydration hose adapter from Etsy for my nalgenes which I’m really looking forward to using bc I don’t always use smart water type bottles. And trail runners for summer hiking.
Well done with wool sweater. Wool is a super fibre. fire/melt resistant. Won't get ruined by a stray spark a hot piece of metal.
As a person who wears glasses , umbrellas also lessen how often you have to wipe the lenses when raining.
Such a good point!
Or a ball cap! That's my go to
Unless you're in the south, then you're just screwed since the humidity that comes with our rain 9 months a year fogs up your glasses. 😂
Combined with a poncho or bivi, umbrellas are great for emergency shelter adding a bit more structure.

Thank you so much!! I'm almost done with one for Nick... I'm a bit obsessed with knitting at the moment haha
The sweater turned out amazing! Great work 😍 6:18
Wow that is a beautiful sweater…truly impressive
Wow - your first sweater is color-work AND Icelandic wool! Impressive!
Thank you! 😊 It was a challenge working with 4 colors. I had to watch a lot of knitting RUclips videos but I'm so happy with how it turned out!
I love your tips and use some of these. So glad when I started using walking poles, too. Also, your sweater is beautiful! You did such an amazing job! 🥰💗
Thank you! It was a lot to take on for my sweater but I'm so happy with how it turned out!
@@amanda.outside you should be majorly proud of yourself! 🥰
A SAM splint, I've only used it twice, but it really comes in handy if needed.
I agree! I always carry one. Such an underrated piece of gear!
Wow great job on that lopapeysa sweater. It’s beautiful
Thank you! I can't to wear it!!

WOW! Your sweater you knitted is awesome! Thx for the video
You are so welcome! I'm hoping to knit a few more this fall and winter! I had no idea how much I would love knitting when I started 😂
I LOVE the sweater you knitted!!!!! This is so inspiring; honestly might have to look into doing this myself! What a great thought. :)
I knew absolutely nothing about knitting when I started back in January and now I'm obsessed! It's such a fun hobby. There are a lot of resources here on RUclips!
I love my kula cloth, one of my favorite hiking/ camping personal items! Great job on your sweater. Wow!

Ok, your first sweater AND you did colorwork! It looks amazing! Well done! 💚 Love seeing fellow knitter/hikers!

This was presented absolutely masterfully, you have brilliant and simply enjoyable content my friend! Professional work!
I love your tips.

I’m a knitter too, good job on that beautiful sweater!
Thank you so much! It was a lot to manage for my first sweater but I love how it turned out!
Wow, your sweater turned out beautifully! I love the umbrella tip. A kula cloth is definitely on my list of wants.

Definitely trekking poles, Makes a hike a lot more enjoyable.

I'm sure it was clean for the video, but I couldn't stop thinking "stop. Touching. The. Kula cloth"
Lol

You did an awesome job on the sweater. It's beautiful!
Sit pads are totally underrated. Also, your sweater is beautiful!!
Beautiful sweater!
Thank you! 😊
The sweater 😍 Amazing!
I love modern gear . I do like umbrella for rain . I do worry about it becomeing a lightning rod though .
Your sweater is beautiful! Thanks for the info about the pee cloth. I have been teetering on purchasing one for camping/hiking trips.
I love to knit and would love to make this sweater! Where did you find the pattern please? Beautiful work!
If you search Ravelry for 'Palatsineule' it should come up. It's by the designer Heli Nikula. She has so many cool patterns!
Good job on the sweater.
Wow, what an awesome sweater! Great job.,
More knitting-hiking content!!!!
Thank you ❤
Great content. You and Nick have a good one.
How do you clean and dry the reusable bags. I have a few and I can never get them fully dry and clean.
Beautiful sweater you made too!!
Great sweater!!
Great job on the sweater! New sub here. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Im still on the fence abiut the pee cloth, though. Still need TP when you go #2 💩
Trekking poles and umbrellas can’t be used together easily. I prefer a poncho.
I can't wear sheep wool but merino is fine.
Hi Amanda. Would you mind sharing what brand your wool tshirts are? Thank you!
I use a single trekking pole if holding the umbrella.
I wear Minus 33 gear. No stink and I got caught in a heavy downpour with no rain gear. I got soaked but I didn’t get cold!
I'm trying think of a way to pack my camping stove during my next hike / camping trip 🤔 I also plan to buy a mountain bike 🤔
@ Amanda did you try the idea withe the umbrella and covering when peeing outside?
Re-Lyte from Redmond Real salt is an amazing electrolyte powder. They also have the best salt.
You rock!
I bought my wool T from Thred-up, it's Helly Hanson and was less than 20.00 :)
Photochromic sunglasses or transition lenses if you wear sunglasses. Good to protect your eyes from suns rays and glare off water, also debris.
Your sweater is beautiful! Do you have a link to the pattern?! I’m looking for a new knit and have some Icelandic yarn in my stash!
If you search Palatsineule on Ravelry you should find the pattern. It's by the designer Heli Nikula. She has so many awesome patterns with Alafosslopi yarn!
@@amanda.outsidethank you so much! I’m headed straight to Ravelry!
Where’s the link for the handmade wool sweater? 😉
Hey I’m in Utah!!
Can you post the link to the umbrella?
Good video. You said LMNT is real salty, does it take you awhile to get use to it?
Not for me since I love salty foods! But you can always add more or less water to adjust the salt level or only use half the packet at a time.
one of the best non-Rx electrolyte supplements I have found is Fast-Lyte's fasting electrolyte powder. it's super rich with electrolytes and minerals
The trouble with an umbrella is that you can't use both hiking poles.
My Liberpee 😁 so i can pee standing up 😋
Are the wool t-shirts itchy in anyway being wool? I just associate wool with itchy clothes dates back to my childhood i guess 😅
The t-shirt I showed is merino wool and that's much softer. I don't find it itchy at all.
Cotton is death particularly in under clothing
