As someone who is 4 sets deep into their own game, the second point of "Do lots of research, then do nothing" hits home. I did that for YEARS. Eventually a likeminded friend and I decided to just have an honest go at it, and the cards just came out of nowhere. Even though the playtesting could be pretty boring because we'd have to sit at the table for hours and hours jamming game after game, it was worth it. Our Kickstarter is going to go live in November and we both couldn't be more excited.

“Do research then do nothing” was me for a while lol. I’ve binged all your Talk TGSs, Kohdok’s 7 Deadly Sins/Errata Text, and TCG Academia, though it was difficult for me to actually make any progress till I found some like minded individual who also were into game design

3:28 That's the exciting part. Both in the win condition. The only physical one does not have a defined win condition, except for drawing out of couse. Instead you build up to, what could be called a boss/commander who has w win condition, then fulfill that condition while stopping the opponent from fulfilling theirs.
The purely virtual one, which like games like Animation Showdown and Inscryption don't work physically, is a lot more straight forward. Phase 1, both players work on getting 3 Avatars out(like a cross between lands and commanders), and first to do this ends Phase 1. Phase 2, first to have no Avatars loses. If you failed to get out any Avatars in the time your opponent took to get out 3, you lose instantly. The 3 works as a timer, as a balanced deck should be able to get out 2 before Phase 2 starts, playing their third on the first turn of Phase 2.
Second works a lot more like MTG, just with ARG features. The first is wholy unique, and closest comparison is telling history at a noisy family reunion.

I just started using NotebookLM for my Wrestling Constructed Deck Building TCG and it's been a game change for organization.

@@ShardTCG I just heard about it recently. But I feel like once I get the hang of how it works it'll be revolutionaries for those of us trying to build a whole game solo.

I hit an issue a while back and decided to put my ideas on hold until the back of my brain boiled up a good solution.
The road block? Part of the core idea involves movement. A chase to get an item and return it to your base. One of the pieces of advice from the youtube experts that I have seen, is that an idea like that shouldn't work because TCGs should be duels where the characters should be directly fighting each other. Were as I want "directly fights each other" to be an option but not the way the characters specifically win.
Ultimately, I feel like the biggest issue with a design that includes locations lies in the expansion of the game. Having the characters travel to a specific place in the city to grab the McGuffin is fine as long as they are all in the city. But what happens when we decide to add a new set that takes place in the mountains? The next country over?
Okay, I was also having an issue with designing the cards. and balancing the benefits of each race. But one of the tcg videos I saw helped with the second one and the first one will come in time.

I definitely feel like you’re one of the most objective when it comes to TCG information.
I know this because you always use your own card games success and failures for examples.
you organize and present your guides and suggestions from all spectrums of design and choices.
One thing I noticed for myself recently is making cards more similar then different really helps the design of balance and creates a more cohesive gameplay feel.

Similar stats and tweaks will prevent fluctuations in unexpected outcomes. Don't be afraid to push your limits and test your game's parameters.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoy the videos

The do lots of research and doing nothing section called me out so hard🕊️ I just woke up from being bingeing TCG videos all night and here I am watching more💀
Great points, will be useful to take into account once I actually start!

Research is very important, so you're on the right track.
Really, it is about balance. You don't want to rush into creating without the right amount of research, but just making that little start is a huge psychological leap when working on any project.

I have been watching your videos for a long time now, and they have helped me so much in developing my own TCG. I was just wondering if you would like to take a look at my TCG and see what you think. I have only made a few videos due to a busy schedule, but more will be coming soon. Any feed back would be great.

Cant imagine someone just thinking they want to make a card game without a basic idea or passion for something. Like we need 3000000 more generic fantasy style card games.

      This is true.
But your passion isn't a sprint.
      It is a marathon.
It is okay to feel tired from time to time.
      Just keep grinding every day
