    #4 - Pacers: the best and the worst of "times" during some of the longer races that I've run. On the one hand, there's a half-marathon that runs twice a year that's close by to where I live (and work) that I've run three times. The organizers tend to employ the same pacers, and generally keep them within the same pace groups (give or take 15 minutes), and they are some of the most down-to-Earth people I've ever run with; supportive, friendly, and very interesting overall to talk with, on subjects including running and beyond. On the other hand, trying to absolutely keep pace with them is definitely something that I've learned is a no-no; as you said, everyone has a slightly different pace strategy, and over a long distance, the road to that end goal race time may veer slightly from side to side less or more for each runner. I had one of my absolute worst races where I simply joined up in a pace group and tried to follow the two pacers from start to finish - I felt dizzy and was ill by the time that event was over, and I wound up well over ten minutes behind them at the finish line. Now I have a good training schedule, my Garmin watch, and my favorite running shoes, as well as the excellent advice from your channel, (and a couple of others, too), all working for me after much trial and error, and using those tools, I got a P.R. at the last "half" that I ran; no thanks to the pacers that were present (no offense to them, either)! Thanks again, Jane!

      Not surprised you have had both positive and negative experiences. They can absolutely be great and I think if you truly have the right one...on your pace and super encouraging, it can help a lot. The runner just needs to be able to pull away (usually sooner rather than later) if there are signs the pace is not right for them. Thanks for the kind words about the channel - I really appreciate it! I'm curious to know which other channels you really benefit from! Congrats on your recent PR!!

      @@runningwithjane Certainly, Jane! As to the other RUclips channels aforementioned, here are some of my favorites:
      Flora Beverley - Not a coach as you are, but a very upbeat vlogger that takes viewers along some wonderful routes and trails through the western U.K. and beyond. She is more of a competitive trail runner, but just completed the Paris Marathon in April, and continues to highlight wooded and outdoor trails with a pretty closely-knit group of her peers, and sometimes a big name in the running world.
      Middle Aged Running Man (M.A.R.M.) - I just found him recently, but as he's in the same demographic as I (the title of his channel says it all!), I would be remiss not to list him here. (M.A.R.) -Man just did a video on the many "whys" of what makes someone run and under what circumstances and conditions, and as he's experienced these things a bit later in life (as I have), I find him an interesting personality on the subject.
      The Running Channel - Enough said! They have so many videos dealing with many aspects of training for basically every type of race, as well as content dealing with running form, injuries, (certain) equipment, strategies, as well as more personal vlogs from several of the "staff" members personal anecdotes, races, and varying successes and failures. Their channel has become a library over the past five years or so, and each vlogger has a different ability level, so there's usually someone that has sort of a "pace group" appeal.
      Those are my favorites, and I wonder if you've ever run into them on the web before. Anyway, I'll check back with your channel plenty, both now and in the near future, as my own "big day" inexorably approaches...

      @@runningwithjane November in Indy. I ran one in 2021 and didn't have a clue what I was doing. I probably took in 1/8th of the carbs I should have during the race. I started out too fast. So as expected, I was in run\walk mode at 19 miles. I also didn't do anything except the Wed\Sat runs with the running club. So I figure I'm much better prepared this time.

    My pacing lately is a little bit messed up as I always start to fast for either getting out of a slow group or trying to chase a pacer. That said I am experienced enough to know how much to pull back to rein it in and then being able to maintain a good pace till the end. What was surprising is that shaving off 1h (from my first marathon to now) made the race feel so much faster and way less dreadful. I can remember every section of my first 2 marathons and how far away it felt and now it is all a blur. One thing I had to come to terms with it is that I have to take at least one potty break or two in a full marathon.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Месяц назад

      Experience is huge, right?! I think that's another issue with going with a pacer...it's not so much the pacer...it's that people who often use a pacer are just less experienced and rely on them as a guide. But many times people push into too fast of a pace group and puts them in a worse position. And that makes sense about your faster marathon where you had to push the pace more being less dreadful...because you probably managed the effort so well! Taking an hour off is amazing!! Those darn bathroom breaks - wish I had a better solution but can be a nature of the beast.

      Ooh, that's tough. Great one to manage effort on then. Finish stronger than you started by going out really comfortably in the first half...that still applies!

    I had one bad experience running with a pace group. It was my second time running with a pacer & she was banking time and I was barely hanging on. Come to find out, the pacer had never ran a full marathon before and she was only pacing the first half. She didn't share this information until around mile 10. =/ Another half marathoner took over the pacer job at 13.1 miles and I couldn't keep up anymore. I ended up running 27 minutes slower than my goal time because my second half was so bad.

    • @runningwithjane

      I'm sorry that happened to you, Julie!! Even if she was doing only the half she has a job to do and people trusting her...banking time is never a good strategy ugh!

    Running my first ever full marathon in December. Week 5 of 18 in. Having a hard time figuring out all the fueling needed. I am wanting to do it in 5:45, which means 14 minute mile. My last half was 3:02 which was last November 2023. Is that a good goal or am I aiming to high? Plus every 30 minutes during long runs seems to much for me.

    • @mad_incognito
      @mad_incognito Месяц назад +1

      When I trained for my first marathon I did a half in 2h20 and raced a 5h13 full marathon. This year (my 4th) I did a 1h50 half and a 4h13 full. So I would guess that 5h45 might be a difficult goal if you do a half in 3h assuming you trained well for the half. That said we are all different and so with a good training plan you might pull it off. Also keep in mind that during the marathon training you train on tired legs and so you will be faster on race day.

    • @landaring
      @landaring Месяц назад

      Going faster in mara than half feels like a really ambitious goal

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Месяц назад

      Agree with the other two who commented to you. However, Nov. will have been a year prior, so if you've been running consistently since the half, could be a totally different story if you've gained new fitness in that time. If you can run another half marathon in the next month or two, could be a good opportunity to see where you're at. Also, if you do a run-walk strategy getting that 14-min. goal is probably more attainable as you'll be able to better manage energy.
      As for fueling every 30 min, keep practicing until you can get down to that. If you're only at every hour right now, for example, push back to every 50 min. for. a couple weeks, then 45 min, etc.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Erika! Best to remember that it's just one run out of a large training block. It's all cumulative! Focus on what did go right in the block and what has prepared you to be ready. And if you did finish the run at least, or most of it, always good to focus on the wins.

    Great video 😊 I'm following your plan for my 1st marathon that is in 5 weeks time I've had a little injury on my foot I've seen a physio and he says i will be okay start back slow this week, I'm going to do a week low mileage no higher run than 4 miles to see if im okay if it goes well will leave 3 weeks left would you recommend tapering down to 34 miles then 24 miles then 9 miles + marathon or should I instead of the 24 mile week do a 43 mile week then do the 9 mile + marathon as before injury got to 19.1 miles longest run 43 for the week. Thank you in advance for and advise or help 🙂

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Месяц назад +1

      If you've only missed a couple weeks of consistency due to foot injury, I would just leave what's left the same. Don't want to overtrain near the end and perhaps have the foot injury fester in the process. That's my best answer not having more info or knowing how your block has gone overall. But if you made it to 40+ already and 19 in one go, it sounds like you're in a good spot. Best of luck in the taper and hope you heal up fast.

    Regarding nutrition during a race, you mention 1 gel a half hour. Would you say that's the same for us slower runners (13-14min per mile pace)?

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Месяц назад +1

      Yep!! I know that ends up being a lot of gels to carry though. Good to practice using what will be on the course...then you can have some on you and take some when it's available. Other rec. I have is to use Tailwind or similar and concentrate it (I do like 3 scoops in 8 oz. which is 75g carbs). This would allow you to get away with eating fewer gels.
