    In reference to the final question, Sicily was never a U boat base. The major Axis submarine bases in the Mediterranean were at La Spezia in northern Italy, Toulon in southern France and Salamis in Greece. Offensive U boat activity, albeit considerably abated, continued from these bases until well into 1944.
