Its not hard for me to understand, KKl and susan flannery are both original cast members and susan flannerys best onscreen chemistry was better with KLL appose to Jonh, and since they are both exeptional actors -they would be able to pull of an intimate tear jerking moment onscreen, so it made sense from a directors and ratings point of view. Then from a writers - story arc point of view it made sense for Stephanie’s character as the true compass of the family to be the one to really realize and comprehend what is actually important in life ( love and acceptance) and what is not, and to leave that as her legacy ( otherwise her character would have died non the wiser, which would have been a terrible shame) and she knew that she would’nt have been able to learn her life lesson of the above if it weren’t for Brooke, - litterally the hardest person to probably accept. Many people will agree that the people that you clash with the most usually teach you the most about yourself upon retrospection, though it doesn’t excuse the other persons behavior or make it any more acceptable, but it does force you to grow as a person. And although Stephanie loved her family, she loved being viewed by them as strong and thats how she wanted to be remembered, not in weakness and not with pity or sympathy which would have been the case if her family was around her in the end. So even that part befits the character. Than from a human perspective, though it is showbizz, the people and actors behind it does matter, it may also be a factor that Susan might have prefered her last scene to be her onscreen compadre KKL as they are close in real life and really respect each other and loved working together. So not that hard to believe or to understand in my opinion.
