DJI Mavic Mini (DJI Mini 2) Hand Launch and Land
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 янв 2020
- In this video I demonstrate how to hand launch and land your DJI Mavic Mini. I go over all the basics of launching and landing your Mini as well as sharing some advanced tips using the combination stick command. I also show you how to do an emergency shutoff of the motors. Plenty of examples so you can understand the mechanics and learn how to launch and catch your Mavic Mini.
NOTE: Hand launching and landing can be dangerous if not done correctly. Keep your eye on your drone at all times and do NOT attempt if you do are not comfortable with the hand launching and landing.

I wasn’t aware of the ‘nudge’ launch for my Mini. Nice one!
Ya
Steve that has to be one of the best clearly described videos on hand launching and hand catching your drone. Excellent well done looking forward to seeing some more great content that just keeps it honest, easy-to-understand and no fluff or filler .. lol 😁 cheers from Waterloo Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Rich, totally appreciate that! 😀👍
This is very important to learn this take-off/landing method when there are dogs near the drone operator...
My brother gave me a drone last year and I went to show my best friend how it flies on his farm land, his dog was always chasing the drone and I had to catch "the bird" by hand otherwise it was damaged if it was picked up by the animal when it made a normal landing on the ground.
My friend burst out laughing when he saw his dog running after the drone!😄
Haha! Thankfully our dog Molly has no interest in chasing the drone but you raise a really good point, I never of thought of that one before. Thanks for the comment and happy, safe flying! Cheers!
I love this guy. Just binged a bunch of tutorials. 🐐
Thanks for watching, cheers!
Thanks for the very good and detailed Explanation. This is one of the best.
Thanks Udo!
Useful tips. Thank you.
Excellent demonstration, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Thank you for this info. Hopefully I'll never need the last tip but the gentle push upward takeoff looks nice!
Best hand land video thus far! Straight to the point and easily understood.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. Cheers!
Didn’t know about the auto take off by raising her up. Thanks Steve!
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Feels so good! I feel like the drone is like an animal o something
Another great video, Steve. Thanks!
Nudging the Mavic upwards to take off is really cool.
Thanks! It is really cool. 😀
Hey @Steve Coutts. Great video! I personally don't have a mavic mini, but love my spark. Great job as always!
awesome tips .
Thanks !
Thanks a lot for this amazing video
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching, cheers!
Great tips. Thanks.

Nice info man, thanks! Just got my Mini today, it’s awesome!
Awesome! Enjoy! 👍
So cool and excellent tips related to hand takeoffs landings. Good job and informative
Thanks Phil!
The nudge is my favorite launch technique-so simple and straightforward!
Yeah, I discovered it by accident on my DJI Spark many years ago. 😀
Steve Coutts cool 😆 great discovery. You're the only person I've seen do it.
Liked your video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
0:35 I just literally laughed out loud.
3:10 The first time I've seen that technique. VERY COOL!
Thank you... the best instructional video on this topic.
Well, I'm glad someone enjoyed the joke - haha! The "nudge" is pretty cool. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
@@SteveCoutts Keep up the great content!
Uh, like you're not the ONLY one that didn't know this after having it for SIX MONTHS, DUH!!!
Great! I got the Mini 2 just yesterday and I saw many tutorials about it. But this trick is amazing! I tried it and it works fine!
Thanks a lot!
Great
Ready to take off from my boat thanks to your advice! Thanks👍
Good luck!
Excellent video sir!!!
Thanks William!
Great explanations and that nudge launch is pretty cool!
Thanks! Yeah, it's a cool feature.
Great video Steve. This is the best video I've seen on the different methods. I really prefer your method of holding the drone rather than the flat palm. Cheers!
Thanks John! Yeah, I just don't find the flat palm stable. Cheers!
Excellent video steve very clear instructions and easy to understand. Well done my friend 👍
Thanks very much! 👍
Good info Steve, cheers.
Thanks!
The nudge launch thing is awesome!
Yeah, for sure!
Very nicely demonstrated Steve. THanks mate.. Merv F from Perth
Thanks Merv!
Very clearly explained, the best video on this subject. Thanks for sharing with all of us and cheers from Montreal!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Cheers from Trail, British Columbia. Temporarily, for over a 5 weeks now, not in Calgary. 😁
@@SteveCoutts Thanks for sharing your latest news. On my side, I flew the Zino 2 since Jan 16th but stopped on Mar 14th because of the quarantine. In early April got the Mavic mini flying it only indoors, and your demos were very helpful for practicing hand take-oof and landing.
Great video, I shared it, very informative.
Thanks Joseph, I appreciate it!
Nicely done, Steve!
Thanks Don!
Awesome video Steve! Im a proud Mini owner too and that nudge trick is the next stunt I'll try in my future flights. Thanks for sharing and best wishes from Chile 🇨🇱
Thanks Oscar! Enjoy your Mini! 👍😀
I ordered this drone and am waiting for it to arrive. I just learned that it will do more than I thought for take off/landing. I subbed.
Awesome! It's a pretty amazing little drone. Good luck with it! Cheers!
Great stuff Steve. Like the auto-launch by lifting it up; hadn't seen that before! Wishing we had your snow...... :) Cheers, Ian in London
Thanks Ian! Haha! Do you really want that snow?? We just had -30ºC for a week a few of weeks ago. That was really unpleasant. I actually do like the snow but it's no fun shooting outdoors in the cold. Cheers! 😀
Well done Steve, Tks.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
great stuff

Excellent video, thanks.
Thanks Wayne!
@@SteveCoutts yes, thanks for you reply, and your dedication in getting videos out in the freezing weather. Appreciated. 😊 😊
@@waynejohn8 Haha! This was the second attempt. The first attempt I had to abort because Molly (our dog) got too cold waiting even though she had a nice warm coat on and a blanket to lay on. That day was slightly above zero. Cheers! 😀
Nicely done! Way better than mine. 😜

Thanks for that tips bro planning to buy mini mavic but still no budget
Nice to know that.
I have just got my sony fdr x3000 action cam working propaly, and now saving up for a mini 2 drone to do areals in my vlogs on my sailing trips.
Gerard.
Thanks! Mini 2 is a great drone and should make an awesome combo with your action cam for capturing your adventures. Cheers!
Excellent presentation. Regards AJ
Thanks AJ!
Very helpful! Very cool! Thank you for mention that emergency power off mode could stress out the motor. I have done this a couple of times since I caught the drone by hand when it was not reach the certain height and the motor still ran the full speed 😛
Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching. Happy, safe flying! Cheers!
Always good and practical videos. I land it On my hand - no problem. But lift off is always a challenge. Will try your methods. BTW, love the “sneaky” launch method - it’s pretty cool and practical.
Haha! Thanks! 👍
nice!!
Great video. You have a beautiful model helping you. You guys are super cute.
I can't figure out how to charge my remote. Not sure if I lost a cord. Great tutorials. I've watched and learned a lot from all your spark videos. Now I'm binge watching your MM videos.
Haha, thanks! Any micro-USB type-B cable will work for charging the remote or Mini. Cheers!
Hi Steve. Thx for another great video!
Hey Don, thanks and thanks for watching!
Hey Steve. Propellers messed up like yours. I must have inadvetantly bent them. I knew what the problem was and how to fix it by your awesome video. Many sincere thanks,
Don
@@donspringer8234 Thanks Don, glad the video was helpful. Seems like the Mini's props are fragile. Happy, safe flying!

It's super easy. Never tried before. Sometime you miss the easiest things... As already mentioned: best instructional video... 😅
Thanks Sascha! It is quite easy. Happy flying!
As always: good job Sir.. uuh Steve😉🤣
Haha! Thanks Fred! 👍
Very usefull video! link for propellers please..
Thanks. If you search for "Mavic Mini propellers" on Amazon.com, you will find them. My wife bought them for me from Amazon. They are available under a number of different "brands", which I suspect are the same propellers. They worked just fine for me but stopped using them after I did a review on them. I just feel more confident with DJI props knowing how finicky the Mini is with its propellers. The quality of the 3rd party product varies for sure. I did a review on them here - ruclips.net/video/fuEwpzRbpHM/видео.html. I have not linked to them in any videos because I don't have full confidence in them. Cheers!
Great video, can the mavic air do the same things, still learning that one, cheers rick knoppert
Thanks! Yes, the joystick controls are the same.
Masterclass
Thanks Arthur!
Nice video Steve,
And so much snow. Nice!
The sneaky "nudge" lift-off, shall it work with the Spark? Haven't tried it yet but looks nice.
Thanks Danny! Yes, it does work with the Spark. I just tested it. 👍
@@SteveCoutts Great!
Hey Steve! Great tips and all! I personally hate to use my palm for taking off/landing... I use fingers aswell;)
Thanks Isaac! Yeah, palm is just too sketchy. 😀
Don't need to move quick, just fine from the front of the camera. The sensors won't pickup and bounce the drive drone away from that angle.
Great explanation! And based on that and that alone you’ve gained a new subscriber! I noticed replacement props on your Mini, why, did you damage the originals? Have the replacements given you any trouble with stability or hovering or anything?
Thanks, I appreciate that! Yeah, my original DJI props had issues right out of the box. I replaced them with DJI OEM. These ones were a gift from my wife for Christmas. I have been testing them since. I like to thoroughly vet stuff before I make a recommendation one way or the other. Cheers!
I like the nudge, how did you discover this method? Thanks for making and sharing.
100% by accident. Then I tested it a few times to make sure it was actually a thing. 😁 Thanks for watching!
Hi Steve, great vid thanks for posting, can I ask you where did you get the funky red n white props - did you buy 'em (don't see them on the 'gear list') or make 'em?
Thanks! My wife bought them for me from Amazon for Christmas. Easy to find. I didn't put them in the gear list because I am still vetting them. I haven't had any issues but plenty of folks have complained about them. DJI won't support you with 3rd party props so be cautious. Have a video on them coming, hopefully Friday. Cheers!
Great video! What brand are those props?
Thanks! The props are sold under a variety of "brand" names. I did a whole video on them - ruclips.net/video/fuEwpzRbpHM/видео.html
They should of put a hand launch option just like the rise tello
Hey, that is DT Calgary!! cheers ^^
Yes, sir! Only made possible by a sub-250g drone. Cheers!
Рад снова Вас видеть. Посмотрел как всегда с удовольствием.
Спасибо за просмотр!
@@SteveCoutts спасибо за контент. Люблю смотреть ваши видео
Thank you for this informative video...
Yesterday I started my drone and held it with my hands tightly, then suddenly the motor started rotating at full speed still I didn't let it go and it was not turning off when I was using my controller....Then I used the emergency shut down to stop it by turning upside down..
Can you explain me the reason for that?
Thanks. If you "nudge" the drone up or down while the motors are running, the props will spin up to full speed and the drone will lift off and hover. That is likely what happened. You can see that function in action in this video - ruclips.net/video/lvanWx9Gko0/видео.html. Cheers!
nice video... don't forget to mention that you have to have always the wind in the back ! It's safer when there is wind :-).
Thanks Marc, that is a very good point, one that I should have included. Next time. 😀
Great video, where did you get your Mavic mini, from ??
Thanks. Drone Shop Canada in Calgary, Canada
nice tips is this applicable to mavic air also?
The take-off process will be different (DJI Go 4 vs DJI Fly) but everything else should work 100%.
Thanks Steve. Great video. Would you say that this could all apply to the Spark also?
Thanks Mike! 100%. I tested the "nudge" with the Spark this morning and it works too although it doesn't seem to react as quickly as the Mini on that one. 👍
@@SteveCoutts thanks Steve. All the best. Can't wait for your next video. You are a great member of the Drone Community.
@@MediaMike-fz7st Thanks Mike! I appreciate it.
Thanks Steve, I enjoyed that video very much. I think people using their palm probably have large hands so I would do the three finger grasp myself.
By the way I noticed you have third-party propellers on your mini. Have you had any problems with them at all and what brand are they?
I ask because I watched another mini RUclipsr trying three different sets of third-party propellers and he had trouble with all of them and one of the sets looked just like what you have on yours. (Between you and me I don’t think that he mounted them correctly) I know that you have to clean out the old thread lock with the old screws before putting new props on. I learned that the hard way because I couldn’t get the new propeller to seat properly until I cleaned out the threads.
Thanks! I have not had any problems with these propellers but I am still testing them. I have heard that plenty of folks have had issues. My wife bought them from Amazon.com and they were "Anbee". I don't see those any longer but see a similar offering from "Helistar". I suspect they all come from the same place. That is really good information about the thread lock, thanks for passing that along. I wonder if that's why people are having problems. I have successfully used 3rd party props with my Spark for a long time but the Mini is a different bird, much more sensitive to variations in quality. Cheers!
Thank you so much sir. I never even knew you could hand launch without touching controls with a simple nudge upwards. Great stuff 👍
By the way, what backpack is that please? as I’m running out of room with all my new gear and in need of a new backpack.
Thanks Leo. I just stumbled on the "nudge" while shooting the video. I haven't even tested to see if it works with my Spark. I use a Lowepro ProTactic 450AW. I believe there is a newer version of that bag out now. Great bag and easy to reconfigure the bits inside to fit whatever you need. 😀
Steve Coutts Thank you sir.
@@rockyviewaerials1218 You bet and please, call me Steve. 😀
What brand are the red and white props?I like the visibility.I have seen some on amazon but the reviews were not that great. How are these?
The brand was Anbee from Amazon.com but you can't find it any longer. I believe they are all the same even though they come from different "brands". They have been flawless for me but like you mention, others have had issues. I have a video coming later today (hopefully) that goes over them in more detail. Cheers!
👍👍👍
great job....great videos.....i want to buy either a mini or a spark....i know you have both....what is your opinion?
Oh boy, that is a tough call. I think it really depends on your needs and whether or not sub-250g matters. The Spark has features the Mini doesn't like Active Track and forward obstacle avoidance, plus it's very durable. The Mini on the other hand has 2.7K video, almost double the battery life and a 3-axis gimbal. I think for me personally, if I never owned a drone before and was just getting started I would choose the Mini because it's newer and I think offers good value. It's also worth considering DJI is no longer manufacturing the Spark. Good luck!
@@SteveCoutts thank you keep up the good work
@@SteveCoutts thank you for all your help.i decided to go for used mavic pro.what do you think?
Nice video! Just one remark: You don´t even have to push up the left joystick to do the advanced Launch. Simply toss the drone very gently in idle and it will recognize the movement and launch...
Thanks Thomas. Immediately after I do a CSC/left stick up I demonstrate exactly what you mention, not "tossing" mind you, more of a nudge. Cheers! 😀
how do you like those props? can you provide a link?
The props have worked very well for me. No issues, no errors. Not all have had the same positive experience though, so I would be cautious. Here is a link - amzn.to/39jceM7
can you use this methood to take off and land from an siling boat under sail ?, if so can you give us an demo ?.
Gerard. Qld Australia.
Well, if I had a boat I could. You can definitely take off from your hand but landing may be tricky, if not dangerous, if you're moving. Two concerns I would have flying from a moving object. One, the home point is not dynamic. The home point gets set at take off and does not update if you move. So you would need to be very careful to keep it updated should something go wrong (low battery, remote disconnection) and it gets triggered. Two, distance between you and the drone and the speed of the watercraft. Too much of a gap, distance and speed and you may not be able to return back safely. I have never had the opportunity to fly from a boat but even if I did, I'm not sure I would do it with the boat in motion. Good luck, cheers!
@@SteveCoutts Thanks for the reply. I will keep those points in mind and i may do an vedio on the subjet myself but i like to know what others think of.the idear.
Thanks.
Gerard.
Hi @Steve, what about your backpack. Can you carry on with this backpack a lot of gadgets like, the drone, a laptop, remote control for the drone, a 360 camera etc? A link for that backpack please??
The day I shot this video I was carrying the following items in my backpack: Canon EOS R, Canon 80D, GoPro 5, DJI Spark, DJI Mavic Mini, remotes for both drones, Freevision gimbal for GoPro, Manfrotto Pixi, Hoodman loupe, tripod (attached) and various extra batteries, cables, etc. Could have put a laptop in there too. Lots of room. Link is in the description. Cheers. 😀
@@SteveCoutts Thanks
I had to use the E-shutoff today because the motors just wouldn't shut off even tho I was holding the stick down.
Interesting. I have never experienced that behaviour, left joystick down in mode 2 has always shut off the motors. Bug maybe?
Hey Steve i just got the mini 2 and tested it at home. I havent really been watching how to land videos because i saw there was an auto land button and for someone with no experience with drones whatsoever it told me during my first flight....(inside the house lol) to land manually bec for some reason i had to land it manual (i might have twicked the buttons I dont know) and when i grasp it w my fingers in between the body, the motor kept running OMG and it wont stop i got rattled! It was telling me in red warning, aircraft attitude something lol
Now seeing ur video i should have tilted it side ways and it stops the motor! Anyway one he*l of a scare for me i thought if i let go it's gonna hit the ceiling!!!! Finally i pressed the land button on my app and it stopped *whew*
Which reminds know ur gear 1st b4 doing anything hahahaha
Haha, yeah, I probably would have done the same thing if I didn't know. Glad you saved it and know how to do it. Happy, safe flying!
Is the nudge bad for your drone motors or gimbal?
I can't imagine how the nudge would cause any more stress than normal startup. Cheers!
hi Steve how you rd 3 screens in same time in youTube ?please and thank you
I'm not sure I understand the question. Can you please rephrase it?
Steve I was wondering how a person can display three screens at once on RUclips?
In sport mode will it still try to avoid your hand?
Yes.
Do you need to push any buttons to stop the propellers when you catch it in the air or is it automatic?
Whether you instigate an auto landing process by pushing a button on the remote or by pulling down on the left joystick (mode 2), the props will stop automatically once the drone touches down. Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts great thank you
where did you get those props?
My wife gave them to me for Christmas. She got them off Amazon.com. The brand was "Anbee" but I no longer see them, seeing "Helistar" now. They have worked well for me but lots of folks have reported issues so I would be cautious. Cheers.
what i did is to grab the drone and than pulling the left stick down..it gets very loud for a few seconds but it worked..the dron shut down then
Yeah, that works too. It gets loud because it's trying to pull away and stay in the air before it "acknowledges" the landing/shutdown sequence. Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts thanks for answer! Do you think this can damage the motors? I think with the phantom this works better
@@caseybachmeyer It probably stresses the motors a touch but unless you're doing it frequently, I doubt that it's anything to worry about. Cheers!
Good info as always Steve. I'm glad your candy cane props worked for you, they did not work for me.
Thanks! Yeah, so far they have been fine. I have heard though lots of folks are having issues with them. I would honestly prefer if DJI just made some colourful options. They look cool but also they are so good for improved visibility.
@@SteveCoutts I agree completely. I would think colored props would be a decent money maker as well.
I ran Anbee props on my Spark like you do, and never had an issue at all. I did notice some of the screws that came with my aftermarket props for the Mini were not quite straight either. I may give them another try.
The one odd thing with my Mini, is that it is always the same motor that vibrates with the aftermarket props. I've tried a couple different sets and rotated positions, but always the same arm.
@@dronerisephotography2378 Yeah, totally. DJI is leaving money on the table. My Anbee props for Spark have been bulletproof but the Spark is much more tolerant of bad props. The Mini, not so much. Interesting about the vibrations and thanks for the info.
