It's rare that a story can center so well on an alien mindset. This one makes the actions of the gestalt sensible withing it's way of thinking. It killed and destroyed. Not out of any malice or ambition. It was simply following it nature. It's imperative was to either adsorb or neutralize rival gestalts, it took what it needed in order to accomplish this. This was how it usually killed the small beings. It barely recognized the "small beings" as life. They could not be fed upon with enough efficiency yo make it worth doing nor could they harm it enough to be anything more than a minor annoyance. It simply ignored them most of the time. The killing was a result of it taking something that the small beings required. It had an intelligence greater than most of it's kind and even though he did not understand the nature of the heavily fortified and defended Earth. He knew it was not a gestalt but possibly for the first time ever it's greatest of it's kind intellect recognized that there was significant power in a non gestalt form. It didn't even think in terms of combat. The closest thing it had way the absorption or neutralization of other gestalts. It would not even consider what to do with say, a torpedo bomber with a 4 man crew. Such things were not responded to and were rarely even noticed. After he had been ground down into the merest shadow of his old self and kept in containment. It did not think in terms of anger or fear. These emotional states did not exist for it. It still had most of it's intellect and was faced with a situation outside of his understanding. The closest thing that he knew of was neutralizing another gestalt but that would inevitably result in the total destruction of any part of the losing gestalt that could not be taken on by the victor. That would certainly included any portion that manipulated knowledge. Yet there he was, nearly entirely stripped of everything but his knowledge of self and most of it's knowledge of outside of it's self. A knowledge that was wholly inadequate to understand the situation that he was in or how and even more confusing, why it was put there. Mercy was not a concept that existed by his way of thinking. Not that it was rejected, it was just not a concept that had ever before been relevant.
I simply LOVED this story ! The reader's total confusion of being inside a completely alien mind, eventually morphing into understanding. So many FTL stories feature two-dimensional, dumb, aggressive, lobster-clawed, enslaving alien empires, but this was a breath of fresh air ! The writer had real talent and imagination, kudos to them and to yourself for reading this so clearly ! ( an AI would have made a typo-ridden, annoyingly even-voiced mash of this ! )
Ohhhh this reminds me of another fascinating piece from HFY - a first contact with a fabricator species. Wish I could remember its name but it was another case of trying to comprehend alien mindsets, their bio-technology, and how they traverse the stars.
Civilization; I am reminded about a story of an anthropologist who asked her students what the first sign of civilization was. A lot of them said things like writing, art or more complex social structures. Her answer was a mended bone because an injury like that in a state of nature and you're dead. Can't escape from predators, can't get to food or water but a mended bone means someone took the time and effort to care for you. Something you don't see in a state of nature and This-Many while advanced, was still acting in a state of nature; expanding, conquering, devouring. Now they are discovering civilization as This-Few.
This story seems to need a part 2. The conversation between 2 vastly different life forms was interesting and well done. Thanks for this interesting and entertaining story. I like to listen to audio programs while doing chores. I used to get very antsy when doing chores, so I had trouble sticking to them until they were done. Internet entertainment stops me from being antsy, so I am able to get my chores done. If I need to go away from whatever device I'm using to access the internet for a few minutes, I just pause the program until I can get back to it. Thanks to everyone who provides informative, entertaining, and interesting content on the internet. 😊

gotta love people out here being adorably human about it as if you hadn't just seen a wider viewpoint to include contextually. from an engineering perspective the fourth apex is synergy. as cooperation, community, squad tactics, strategy and importantly planning is entirely about getting cogs of a hypothetical machine to work together to achieve results beyond the scope and scale of themselves. hence why the generalized problem with people is they can be used for nefarious systems without their knowledge or consent and most folks fail to actuate their self awareness sufficiently to act upon the freewill required to defy trend. still at least we're getting to the point where we'll have a wording to express objective morality, soon.
Hi just so you know the thumbnail is from prey 2017 or an artist that played it and made a picture of it specifically the end of the game when the typhon got their way to Earth and ended humanity.

This really helps to contextualize how alien an... alien mind would likely work.
Well done to the wordsmith and the narrator.

Humanity is not a hivemind?
@@Oyrou YEEEEEESSS! Thank you!
My proposal for the name of the Fourth Apex: Community.
I was thinking of simply "help" but that works too
Camaraderie? Unity but still separated.

The Power of Friendship
Based off the last few lines I was thinking humility

Definitely
Another comment says there are four more parts
here's hope that you'll narrate the remaining 4 chapters of the fourth apex

That was an interesting story.
Want to managed to get around some of the terminology the story is interesting as you said
props to the writer this was one of the best ive heard
The fourth Apex is cooperation.
Or it could be called Alliance.
@@melkiorwiseman5234 cooperation would be more appropriate, since it encompasses and implies more than just alliance.
Best story on RUclips I’ve ever listened to.
A C'Tan... huh
I had a similar thought, and yeah, sounds right.
Saw the title and immediately thought of the Istanbul Grand Prix circuit. Turn 8 was a monster.
Damn i love these alien convos
Someone had a few too many edibles and sat down to write.
Another possible name for Fourth Apex: Union or Alliance?
***EDIT***
Changing my guess to Fourth Apex being Wisdom.
Fourth Apex: Unity
The Dust. It's a story in Endless Space universe, isn't it ?
I say call it cooperation
It was the friends we made along the way :D
gotta love people out here being adorably human about it as if you hadn't just seen a wider viewpoint to include contextually.

For some reason this reminds me of the entitys from the Web series called worm

More
Is it Alien in concept and execution, or just a confusing and poorly written story?
