A fugue feels like a search for unison or at least union from many voices with varying things to say; union that is reached at the end with a more inexorable statement.

"Beyond the Notes" is one of the best musical uploads in RUclips. It goes not only "beyond" but much deeper into the meaning and understanding the notes, the whole structure, and its consequences on interpretation and performance. BTW, don't you worry about the lower pitch of the clavichord: it goes so well with the serious mood, as opposed the Prelude' sadness: The Fugue is in D# and the Prelude is in Eb - although nowadays we think/hear both scales as equivalent, in the past there was a slight different between them. Thanks for this wonderful upload.

This is my personal favorite of the Bach WTC fugues. I love how Bach exhausts nearly every possible permutation of the subject: inversion, stretto, canon, augmentation, etc. When I was in college, I wrote my own fugue on a 12-tone subject greatly modeled after this fugue.
