- Black Ash Basket Making. www.abenakibask...
A lot of people have asked how I make the Black Ash Baskets. This may not be the best video I have ever seen .. however .. it is the best I could do .. on short notice. Please enjoy it.
The sound of the pounding is like an old familiar song. Nice job Jesse. Thanks for posting.
Great job bro! Your hard work brings beauty and joy to many! Thanks for posting this up so people can see all that hard work! Keeping our Abenaki traditions alive!
Wow that is really cool!!! Great work my friend.
Anytime of the year is ok, I like to cut them before the blackfly season, or after. Blackfly's suck. Thanks for the thumbs up on the video. I filmed it by myself .. tripod, self timer.
Wow! That seems to be a fantastic material to work with!
Thanks for the upload, and nice pieces of works.
Regards,
Halvor.
Beautiful!!!
@radopunk
This works for Black Ash, Brow Ash , White Swamp Ash.
Other Hardwood species do not have the same qualities required to separate growth ring layers by pounding. Some of the other Hardwood species can be pounded off the log , however the materials become brittle and un-usable for basket making.
@NancyToday
pound each spot once. overlap pounding the next spot . overlap pounding the next spot .. repeat the length of the log. rotate the log .. repeat until log is done. a couple zillion hammer strokes,
Thanks so much. I'm in search of a black ash tree at the moment.
What is the best time of the year for harvesting the log to make these splits? You did a good job on this video, much appreciated.
European Ash, pine, oak not going work as well as black ash or brown ash or green ash. You can use Oak, however the process is separating the actual growth rings with a Knife ather than pounding, You can check out White Oak Baskets from the south if you like.
Seasoned Black ash is fine to use .. however you should soak the dried out log .. before pounding it. Makes it easier to pound, less cracking of the splints as you pound and pull off .. roll up. Dried splints will crack = bad.
can we use european ash or other kinds of woods such as pine, oak, beech, birch?
That's an awesome video! I'll approve it for being on my channel. How long did you have to pound each spot on the growth rings before you could peel it away?
Does it only work with fresh wood or can i make splints with seasoned ash?
No Problem, Good luck
Great job Jess! Are you still making baskets? You're very good at it!
Thank you Pat, My RUclips account controls have become hard to navigate ... so am a little SLOW about responding to comments.
