Dormi - “sleep”, “death” - all in one song. A lullaby that ends with the sting of death in the last few chords. Magnificent text setting by Rutter.

I thought dormi was imperative like telling Jesus to sleep but maybe you're right

This is the kind analogy is exactly what Weston Noble would have latched onto. I had two years-- and a lot of wonderful analogies under his baton. December 21 marks two years since he left us-- and we miss him every day.

The last chords always get through to me - always a tear in my eye. Some people say Rutter's Christmas works have too much "creme with vanilla sugar rose", too much "Christmas movie soundtrack" in it. Even if this would be true - it is done masterly. But the ending of Dormi Jesu is on a totally other level than many of his other carols (which I like nonetheless).

And I would say to Rutter’s detractors “And?”. What’s wrong with a little sugar, vanilla, whatever? Love it all!

I think they are doing this up a half tone.

No. Just play the note on the piano and see what the difference is. Nothing about perfect pitch. What a dull comment!
