Spike Lee Interview: Exploring Gordon Parks' Versatility and Impact

- Spike Lee calls Gordon Parks one of his heroes and recalls seeing Shaft in theaters in Times Square on 42nd Street in 1971. He discusses the need to grow as an artist, Gordon’s ability to establish trust as a photographer and social justice through art.
Spike Lee is an Oscar award-winning director, writer, actor, producer, author, and NYU Grad Film tenured professor. Lee has directed and produced over thirty films since his first feature film, the independently produced She’s Gotta Have It (1986). Lee continues to produce cinematic works of art that display his skill and ability to showcase outspoken and proactive socio-political critiques that challenge cultural assumptions about race, class and gender identity, such as the Oscar-nominated, Do the Right Thing (1989) and Lee’s epic Malcolm X (1992), which features photographs that Gordon Parks took of the activist and leader while on assignment for Life Magazine.
From the HBO / Kunhardt Film Foundation (KFF) Documentary "A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks" that follows Parks' career, from staff photographer for LIFE magazine through his artistic development and evolution as a novelist and filmmaker.

Spike needs an opportunity to direct a definitive big budget Muhammad Ali biopic.
He was one of the choices to direct the Ali film and he wanted to do it, but he stated after meeting with Will Smith, he knew he wasn't going to get the job.
@@urniebarnes Yeah I read about that. And look at that how that movie turnt out.
If Spike would've done Ali, he may have been able to get Denzel and Angela to reprise their roles and the overall film could've served as a semi sequel to Malcolm X.
Fun fact: Spike wrote a script about the legendary boxer called "Save us Joe Louis" and wanted it to be a 3 hour epic, and as it turns out, he couldn't get it made. I guess it worked out because he ended up doing Inside Man, which is his biggest box office hit to date.
Can't wait to see him reunite with Denzel and Halle Berry for HIGH AND LOW.
Gordon Parks is an immeasurable wealth. I loved him and didn't know his name but in hindsight whenever I saw a still photo that moved me it was his sight, his scope. And I love me some Mr. Lee no disrespect to his union and love his brain and the stories his eyes tell. They are Titans, each in their own day in their own ways.

Spike laughs at his own jokes … who does that ? He’s still brilliant but damm …. Hard to follow his interviews but you have to stick through it - He drops some heavy wisdom and knowledge.

I was curious where Mr. Lee stood on guns as he was a frequent passenger on my route when I drove the B38 bus. Today,while watching the movie "Inside Man", I noticed the shirt, the young boy was wearing, depicted an AR-15 rifle with the words Defend Brooklyn. I'm confused. How are we supposed to "Defend Brooklyn", when you and other anti-gunners work diligently to restrict everyone else from exercising their rightful 2nd Amendment rights. Even willing to violate OUR 1st and 4th Amendment Rights in the process. Born and bread, in Brooklyn!
Not sure you understood the “assignment”. It was an honest question. I have another question. Would Mr. Lee please look into the adverse effects of the “poison-poke”? The CDC has officially recognized as much by beginning an investigation into the effects on the heart and clotting. I am a father and a grandfather. I find it TERRIFYING that this “poison-poke” is still being recommended for babies 6 months and up. My daughters were mandated by their respective jobs, to be vaxxed. There isn’t a day that goes by that my heart doesn’t hurt for what might be in store for their future. I failed in protecting them!
