Unfortunately, Georgia can't rely on the west for help. It's nowhere near the size or population of Ukraine. The only alternative to Russia for Georgia is Turkey, and I'm not sure which is better.

One thing to note is the law does not distinguish foreign government funding and just foreign revenue. Many georgians live and work abroad and send their salaries back to georgia, those donations to ngos also are considered foreign funding, in addition the government is passing laws against transparency for its own supporters, allowing oneshoring of funds into the country without taxes, audits or any docunents showing where the money came from. The ministry of internal affairs can also ask for any personal information not only from NGOs but from private individuals too , inclusing sexual life down to exact times and partner names

The only obligation of such media is to inform citizens in the caption to the material that it is a foreign agent. No arrests, no prosecution. Such foreign agents themselves will cease to exist, because citizens do not like to read the opinion of an open enemy. Look at Ukraine. 90% of the media from the Maidan times were imprisoned and are in prison. They were tried not according to the law, but according to internal orders. Poroshenko, and then Zelensky. Russian foreign agent law doesn't go far enough. Only in 2022 they have blocked broadcast of US government propaganda like VoA/RFE is still operating from Russia while RT has lost its press credentials during Trump Era in 2017 and was forced to shutdown and its broadcasting dropped by the US government against its First Amendment ordering private cable/satellite operators to stop it.
It has been removed from RUclips also, making it hard for anyone to watch it in nations where broadcast is banned.

This video is not exactly bias free. The reality is foreign influence (of BOTH russia and the west) is very high in a country like Georgia (not only there.) The president of Georgia literally is a french citizien who grew up in France and has previously tried to have a political career there. Most westerners blindly think that their media sources (both legacy and new) tell them the truth, but much like russian or chinese or whatever other sources they are mostly BS which will push public opinion in the direction that western corporations want them to push. This is why in western owned media in the former eastern block you will basically find CNN carbon copies who essentially tell the population "go vote for this pro US candidate". To pretend that this is a battle between some kind of "good" president of goergia and the "free" citizens against the "evil" prime minister and his government is just not true. Politics is a dirty game for evil people and the sooner people realise that the better. Instead of listening to talking heads tell them what to do.
There's no element of propaganda here and it's not some US-led conspiracy. It's whether Georgia wants to side with Europe, the free market, and democracy (however flawed). Even if what you were saying were true, it'd be better to side with the US in an indirect and general sort of way, rather than become a puppet state under the very direct and definite control of Russia.
I don't think wests media and Russias media are comparable. Main news sources will tell bs for clicks and sponsors sure, but the fact is that alternative news sources still are allowed in most of west, and there are news sources that want to follow the integrity of reporting the truth. You won't get thrown in jail unless you leak secret documents. The problem is that they don't get the eyes they deserve because of what large part of population prefers: simple versions of the story and where the outcome is in favour of ''our side''. This isn't a West problem, its a human problem. The fact that Russia and China has had relatively good success in influencing the wests media space confirms this.
Can't say for rest of the west, but here in Finland, we are taught media literacy and to confirm sources even in mainstream media. A system that want's to control its population's opinion wouldn't do that.
Georgia is small, sparsely populated, poorly armed, and difficult to supply: if it goes to war with Russia, it will be devastated in a few months, and it is not fair to expect it to do so just because it would be convenient for the West to engage Putin on a second front. Most Georgians would like to join Europe, but the best thing Georgia can do right now is wait for the storm to pass and not take a position...

I would warn everyone to be on their guard, and not listen to some talking head telling them what to do, but still continue to fight for "clean" politics, and try to find "good" people to vote for. Georgia do not have any security guaranties from the west the last time they tried to move closer to EU and NATO they've lost control over south Ossetia. What they are doing is a balancing act, something that Ukraine failed to do before the invasion especially when zelensky tried to push for NATO membership. At this point in time we must acknowledge that NATO's expansion to the remaining buffer states in the east triggered Russia's aggressive response. Russia on its part is the primary responsible in the current conflicts but we must also study their reasoning for their actions not unless the west just wants to do whatever it wants without considering that it will lead to escalation. The west is also in part responsible, they should not have given them false hope that they can join them in NATO. With all their wisdom if they do have some they should have predicted what will be Russia's reaction.
At the very least provide nuance in the video.

@@ryanthreesix Neither can Georgia. The first clause of the Georgian law mentions that this law may not be used to hamper the operations of the NGOs. The government can take no further action after an NGO reveals their funding.

The Russian law is pretty much like the US law called Foreign Agents Registration Act. (FARA) passed in the US many decades ago. The reason why it's needed is that there are 20,000 NGOs funded by foreign governments/entities in Georgia. There is a high likelyhood that a majority of them receive significant funding from the NED, (US's National Endowment for Democracy). This is the non-military arm of the CIA, spun off as a separate US gov funded corporation a few decades ago because many folks didn't want to accept funds from the CIA, who has blood on their hands. The CIA is afraid that if it is divulged that so many of these NGOs are funded by the US they will lose a lot of votes in the upcomming election.
I can guarantee you that Russia has invested a lot more capital into influencing Georgia than the west has.

Its quite different, but even if it was 100% identical, its not about the law itself (and by the way, the Georgian government already has information on all NGOs and their activities in the country, this law isn't really needed for its stated goals). The question is how the law will be used. We've seen in the past how GD uses various tactics, including direct oppression of opposition figures, to quash opposition. GD will 100% use this new law with its wide ranging powers to shut down all opposition, turning Georgia from the path of democracy to being a dictatorship, just like Russia. Its people like you who also said Russia needed such a law and they wouldn't abuse the law, and look what happened there.

Depends on how many good people go to politics. If everone just sits on back and hope for some strong leader who solves everything, then democracy can't work. Wherever in Czechia, someone caring goes to local politics, things suddenly gets much better. But if no good rational people wants to go to politics, then only criminals will do. That's the real core of contemporary crisis.

Georgians literally emigrate to the former-soviet countries because the quality of life is better there, so are the salaries, education and literally everything else.

With the 'Russian bill', the Georgia government probably has in mind how principally, the United States undermined the democratically elected government of Ukraine prior to 2014 through funding organised protest groups - ultimately giving rise to the very undemocratic maidan revolution. Should also add, Russia did not 'invade' Georgia. There were short term incursions into Georgia lasting just a few days, followed by a complete withdrawal. According to Wikipedia, South Ossetia was and is the 'South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast'. People in this area have never agreed to be subject to Georgian rule since the break up of the soviet union. Georgia may not like it, western commentators may not like it, but that is the fact.
To say that Russia invaded Georgia is a lie.

Russian "peacekeeping" force did everything to escalate the situation, they supported separatists to bomb Georgian villages prior to the response operation which is now blamed to be "the attack" by Russian propaganda. Russian army regiments crossed the border prior to the official start of the engagements. By the way, Russians supported ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia in 90's and in this operation, they sent Shamil Basayev with his brutal warmongers there to bring terror on Georgian population. A few years later, Shamil Basayev started terrorist attacks in Russia. Karma is a peach, right?
