Florida Parks: Explore Dry Tortugas National Park

- The Dry Tortugas National Park, a series of islands 70 miles from Key West, is a place of great beauty, history and solitude.
There’s no road to Dry Tortugas. You take a boat or seaplane, but only if weather permits. You can camp near Fort Jefferson on the island called Garden Key, but don’t forget the can opener because the nearest convenient store is a long way off. You can visit for the day, but again be prepared for whatever. This is a special, isolated park where the screeching birds and the breeze rustling through the treetops provide the soundtrack. About 60,000 tourists visit annually. In comparison, Great Smoky Mountains National Park attracts 11 million visitors who jam the road with their vehicles.

Lived in Florida my whole life and still haven’t visited this place-yet! Most don’t realize how big this state really is with how much there is to see and do on all the coasts.
sad.
Several hours of sailing out of key west. Incredibly remote. Fort reeks with history. The birds aren't even afraid of humans.
Amazing !!!!
Yes, WOW 👏 😍
The nature looks amazing!
I'm going in July! I can't wait! I saw pictures of it years ago and forgot about it until I saw a picture again and looked it up. I'll probably leave an update after my trip!
How was your trip?
🤩 WoW!!
Thank You 😊

Camping there is def on my bucket list
In the middle of nowhere largest masonry structure protecting nothing lol
👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏
WOW . So beautiful my friend told me about this gem 💎 . Greetings from Minneapolis MINNESOTA 🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏿
The park and fort itself looks amazing, but what were they thinking building it in such a remote location?! Seems pretty terrifying.
fort was designed to protect coastal waterways and shipping lanes
Politicians have been wasting money for centuries
Think it was originally an anti-piracy type thing.
Haven’t done it yet but want to soon 👍
Who was camping ⛺️ there?
I don't think they have a case of negligence. The pt is prone to any infection given the current pt dx. How come the pt has PIV instead of Midline or PICC. I don't know what kind of IV meds she was receiving, I suspected a potent drugs that shouldn't been administered PIV, this could cause a potential for skin infection.
If so far from land what did it protect? Couldn't enemy ships just sail around it?
Perhaps important prisoners?
TLDR: Waterways. The depths of the waterways around the island proved ideal for docking and launching line ships (basically the types of ships that make up the bulk of a navy.) The island was also a hardpoint in the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, so someone else controlling it would force the US navy to go on the offensive into the Carribean should it have been required to do so. Instead, once the Spanish-American war kicked off, ships docked and landed here and in other bases along the Keys, and didn't have to worry about potential flanking fleets.
I went here in 2000. It was beautiful. They tell u don’t swim in the mote..imagine my surprise while swimming around the island then seeing a tourist slashing around swimming in it. It has a ton of bacteria from when they dumped human waste etc in it🤢🤮..
Can you go on your own boat?
Is there WiFi on the fort? 😆
No wifi or cell service
Sharks in the water?
yes nurse sharks
"unique" means one of kind. You should never say "very unique". That phrase makes little sense yet people say it all the time like "mass exodus" and other terms.
Is it haunted? Lol
Gay
Keep it to yourself.
Im from Florida, never herd of this place
