  • In the world of horses, even though cultures vary, horses set up a communication system about who can enter their space, and horses that live in stalls get used to just having humans walk in and do things with them so they develop behaviors like biting and getting pushy and stepping all over us. We can teach the horse proper etiquette in the horse's language.

Also they check new things out with their mouths. A horse I knew had never seen a walker like mine and gently mouthed it looked at me and bumped me and rubbed with her head gave me some love she was so great

The same as an infant. Babies don't really understand things well with their hands at first, so they put everything in their mouths because lips have a lot of nerve endings.

Love how the horse is trying to bite the whole time shes teaching how to make it stop 😂😂

That's not trying to bite. A horse that knows and trusts you might playfully nibble but if he wants to hurt you, you'll know unambiguously.
Hoss will bite or bite not. There is no try. 😂

it is all about trust and about handling them with love and care. the horse has to trust you first and know that you are not there to harm them so a slight touch on the nose will like the lady was showing will get the horse to trust you.

Thank you. I’m petrified of horses and my goal is to start greeting them and meeting them. They have so much to offer, that I’ve been missing out on.
Any tips or personal experiences from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

ALWAYS watch their ears. If they move their ears backwards and get fidgety, leave them alone.

Very helpful tips! At first, a friend's older mare would sneak in the occasional light nip but she is doing more nose bumps and lipping now. With the nips I did not scold her much but used better awareness and positioning to discourage the nips. Scarlett seems to have caught on now. What a real sweetie she is.

Very true, we made them bite in bad or in good way, so it's depend to how you Deal with it. because horses in wild bite others for playing and also they bite for Self defense, so it's natural thing, but you have to deal with it by correct tactic

A nose bump with a horse develops a good trust issue and a good way to bond with the horse. you are showing the horse that you are not going to hurt the horse.

This makes a lot of sense. Horses do a lot of stuff with their mouths and noses. I've often seen them nose bump each other. It isn't really practical for people to use our own noses for this because our noses don't stick out enough, and because our noses are more fragile. Using the back of the hand to bump a horse's nose is a safer and more effective method, and is easy for horses to understand. I still would talk to a horse in approaching it though, to avoid startling it, and to let it know that my intentions are friendly.😊🐎
