As part of our yearlong Hip-Hop at 50 celebrations, we invited T.I. to our newly minted LA ctrl studio earlier this year. The Atlanta street rapper turned omnipresent radio force turned mogul has been a force for more than three decades. From pregame jams such as the Jay-Z assisted “Bring Em Out” and “Swagga Like Us” to #1 hits “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life” with Rihanna, Tip is a prime example of rap’s versatility. Back in 2008, it was reported that T.I.’s ‘Paper Trail’ - which debuted at the top of the charts while its creator awaited trial - was the first album for which he’d actually written lyrics on paper since his debut project, ‘I’m Serious.’ The choice to perform a cut from that first album makes clear that he holds his lyrical craft close to his heart, even 22 years later.
