he is using the mosfets switching them on and off, this causes to pulsing needed in the transformer to create a magnetic flux in the ferrite core. this is the reason you can get an AC source from a Dc input at the beginning of the circuit. well, its one of the ways to do it anyway, there are quite a few different angles you can approach it from.
