MOTORCYCLE TRACKING | DJI SPARK ACTIVE TRACKING

- Here I test out how effective and efficient the "active track" intelligent flight mode is on the DJI Spark while riding my motorcycle. Overall, with more practice and getting more comfortable with it, the active track feature is a game changing feature for the solo film maker!

Just learning the Spark, and a cycle rider. Thank you for the cool and honest reporting!
Christian Cutler awesome! Love that little drone. What do you ride??
@@TaylorWashburn '08 Piaggio MP3 500. I can't wait to try out the "follow" function with the Spark. I can see how finding a place to rest the controller while riding can be difficult!
I'll try that too..
I really like the video, im having a hard time how to do the active tracking in my spark too. I can't wait to try the active tracking soon. Thanks for the tips..it is really helpful
Ann Catherine I’m glad the video helps!! 🙂🙂
Thanks Taylor for a great video. I have the Mavic Air and want to try this feature out.
Gene Moretti glad it helped! And the manic air should work even better because it has a higher top speed. I’d love to hear how it works out!
Still haven't tried this feature with my spark, but im gonna for sure
Thanks for this video. will be testing these modes this week here in the Bad Lands of West Texas.

amazing results Taylor. I'm gonna do exactly the same with my motorcycle on Route 66 :)
majkelandzelo thanks and good luck with Route 66! That will be some awesome riding!
@@TaylorWashburn thanks! so far I haven't been that successful to be honest ;), I choose "follow me" mode, I try to go to slowly on my motorcycle, but after some time the drone seems to loose its altitude, I don't know why :/ I'm using Holy stone 700D. Well I still have to learn
I thought you would be having like 100K subs, but only 349?? You have earned my sub, so now it's 350! :D Good luck!
Justin Zandee wow man, thanks so so much! I appreciate the support a ton!! 😁😁
Did you use it on wifi because you lost connection? If you put it to follow your controller, not you, it has much bigger range. I'm considering to buy Spark for my vanlife videos.
Thanks Bro! I tried Active when I 1st got my Spark...not effective...now I also have a MOTO so u have inspired me to try again! Thanks! You’re a good solo videographer! I am solo as well beside my reluctant girlfriend! Lol
ItsMrEverything yes! So happy it got you excited to try again! I hope it works out better for you this time!
Taylor Washburn yes tested yesterday...my Active Track works now...musta had bugs...I bought when the Spark 1st came out...
It's hurtful to see how much time , patience and efforts you put in your vids and how little responce you get a the end.
No way for new creators to get their audience..
Thanks so much man! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my stuff. It definitely is hard to grow an audience, but right now, even if my vids help out just a few people I’m happy!

Good video. Nice to see the Spark being demo'd for something else than selfie mode lol
Michael Pait bahaha. Thanks. Never used selfie mode.
Brooo awsome test! I have never gotten that good of an active track even on foot lol
Stef_Hipari thanks man! Haha. Yea, I was actually surprised, even though I never went over 20mph. I think the key is to try and not have many other objects in the shot that might confuse the drone
@@TaylorWashburn ahhhHHHhhh! Good point! Im dumb such an obvious tip lol. Im usually trying it at car shows or walking with my crew!
Dang, based off this production quality i would have assumed u would have had atleast 50k subs

well done -greetings from a Hot Australia.
Thank you!! And it's absolutely freezing here in the middle of the U.S.!
I forgot to ask; do you still have your Spark and if so are the batteries still ok? I am considering buying a used one and we are almost at the end of 2021. Thanks!
Yeh buddy I cannot connect my spark by an OTG and android phone. Can u help me out
Balls of steel man, some nice footage but way too risky for me to try lol. Enjoyed the vid
Golden Tap Film haha. Thanks! 😂😂 it was definitely a little sketchy, but fun to try!!
Can the drone follow if it was in the front view of you?
I've been dying to try this, coz I also ride a motorcycle and produce content at the same time but here in Baguio, Philippines there's like a lot of trees, like A LOT. Super scared to try it maybe when I travel again after the pandemic and find an open road. But it's nice to see that its possible. Keep up the good work brother!
Vj Catacutan yes, trees can make it tricky. Depending on how tall they are, you could try and fly above them, and that way if the drone doesn’t track properly it will just stop. But, while in active track, the spark will automatically turn on Obstacle Avoidance, so even if it were to encounter a tree while tracking you, it should stop before running into anything. Glad the video helped and I hope you can try it out soon!
@@TaylorWashburn thanks brother! Will try it soon!
Hi, kailangan pa po ba iregister sa caap ung drone?
Great video on active track. Thanks!! Was curious about the home point settings. Did you enable dynamic home point? I wanna try this same thing riding my electric skateboard going about 20 mph. Thanks again!!
Thanks! And good question. No, I just had the home point set to where I took off from since it was a relatively open space and I wasn't going far for the test. Using the dynamic home point would be a good addition to the test. In this I was only going about 15mph, but I'm curious now how it would perform in sport mode if I were going faster. I may have to do an updated test for this!
@@TaylorWashburn yes let me know about the sport mode active track. Im assuming it would go up to around 39 mph but remember no obstical avoidance. Will let you know how it goes when i test things out!!
Great video. Enjoyed it:)

Great work man! I’m looking at drones for my motovlog channel rn. I’m surprised by the spark. It turned out really good... do you have any insight on the mavic air?
Thumperman Motovlogs thanks a ton dude! Well, I would say the mavic air is superior is most ways. The spark may be slightly smaller and lighter overall (when considering size of spare batteries and such). The biggest deciding factor for me was price, since you can get a spark for less than 1/5 the price of the mavic air. If you have the money though though, I would def go with the mavic air. (Although I will say, an added benefit of the spark from my experience is that it’s seemingly indestructible. I’ve crashed it multiple times, one of them being in a river, and it’s still zipping around. Haha)
@@TaylorWashburn Good to know thanks for the insight!
Taylor Washburn so your drone actually went in the river? Asking because I want to film myself kayaking
Nice effort and review +1 sub for you! ❤️
Banana Shitstains thanks so much! I appreciate your support! :)
Hi! Very nice video!
I want to ask:
1:can you track someone else and not yourself? (I have only phone, not controller)
2.if the active track loose you(you go under bridge, or go inside building) what it does? Stop recording and stand still?
3.how high(altitude) can the drone go when you enable active track?
Θανασης Μαντζουρης Θανασης Μαντζουρης Θανασης Μαντζουρης you should be able to track whatever/whoever you want! It would definitely be easier than manually doing it with your phone.
If it loses sight of you while tracking it will just stop moving, but keep recording.
You can go as high as you want before starting active track, and it will try to maintain that height, but if you go too far it may have trouble following you. Also note that while using your phone you only have a range of about 100 feet before you lose connection, so that may affect your tracking performance.
Hope that helps!
@@TaylorWashburn thanks a lot for your answer! It help very much!
Very interesting video, I have been trying to look into something like this for quite some time. The rate at which it keeps up with you is definitely limited but accurate tracking is more important. Do you think if you had; say a neon yellow backpack, would it do a much better job at tracking?
MotoBlizzard yes, speed was a hinderance. Apparently in a recent firmware update DJI increased the top speed at which the drone can active track (because it does not work in sport mode). And yes! A brightly colored backpack or hi-viz jacket would improve tracking. This is straight from DJI’s website: “The way ActiveTrack is able to identify and follow its subject is by color contrast between the subject and background. This means that the greater the color difference, the better ActiveTrack performs.” Hope that helps!
@@TaylorWashburn Thanks mate! Very useful info!
I'm more intrested in your bike than drone.. What kind of bike is it? Oh yeah.. One drone question.. Is the footage always that choppy or is is just because it's in auto?
Stephen King King haha. The bike is a “mutt” of sorts. It’s the frame and motor of a 1980 Honda CM400T, but the gas tank and seat are from who knows where. And the footage is definitely like that because it’s flying on its own trying to track me. If you throw the spark on tripod mode and control it yourself it’s super smooth 🤙🏻
Do you feel that it little bit jerky footage during active mode?
amit gahlot yes, while going around corners or changing directions the drone doesn’t track completely smooth. But for certain situations, such as this, it’s the best option
Nice video
the mechanic thanks a bunch!!
Will it work same way with the car?
Artem Shipov no reason it shouldn’t! Just make sure you don’t go faster than it can keep up
Hey! I also considering to buy dji spark, how much speed u can get on a motorcycle while it still follows u?
TIKUM CHANNEL unfortunately not much, since you can’t use sport mode while in active track, so the spark will only be able to go up to about 12-15mph (maybe a little more), depending on the wind. Hope that helps! The spark is still a pretty great drone!
@@TaylorWashburn thanks! Even though its not that fast, but i think its the best drone for beginner like me.. Thank btw helps me alot
You need more subs
FinalKamehameHillbilly thank you!! I just need to make more vids with my motorcycle I guess. Haha

Enjoyed your video. New Subscriber to show support. I liked your drone experiment.
Houndsman One thank you so much!! I appreciate the support big time! :)
Whats the name of the song being played?
It's called "Outside" by Ikson!
Did you turn it on sports mode for the road shots?
ELOC no. Unfortunately you can’t use sport mode with active track
@@TaylorWashburn Ok good to know. Made sure to like and sub, keep up the good work!
All things considered, the spark is capable of great footage in controlled environment, keep in mind speeds and range, motorcycle shots would be best suited for perhaps stunt shots above. Great concept however to much at stake for such an Advanced shot.. you can certainly get it done but would it be worth it be careful ..
Ernest Eggleston I do love the versatility of the spark! But I agree that it isn’t necessarily suited for this type of action shot. It was a little tricky to pull off and not something I really even recommend. But it is a fun experiment to see what the spark is capable of! Would obviously be better to have someone piloting the drone for the follow shot though.
Great video, thank you! Sad that the active tracking puts everything into auto-mode. :(
Thanks! It can be quite annoying and a little limiting, but for what it is, it opens up some cool opportunities
Show
What was your speed on the first and second try??
Alex Faylona I was only going roughly 10-15 mph on the moto. The Spark was in regular mode, not sure if tracking works in sport mode though
Gud job
12mph on a 40mph road. Genius.
swifty 419 it all worked out 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
I subscribed. This is dope. Sharing :-)
Lynne Lucas thanks so much for the encouragement and support!! 😄😄
Dude i have to buy one if it work for you
Anthony Nixon it’s definitely a worthwhile purchase. I’ve had mine for a couple years now and beat it up quite a bit and it still works great!
i got some good active track footage on my latest vid, lmk what you lot think! Love the lil sparky
Would this be reliable to use on a boat does anyone know?
Matthew Robb I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable with it. You’d want to turn off the return to home feature for sure. Otherwise if you lose connection it will fly back to the home spot and try to land in the water 😬
Taylor Washburn Say for example I set the return home to a spot on land, would that work do you think? Thanks
Nice work buddy .#indracosmictube
Cosmic Tube thanks a bunch!!
But you can't go more than 20 mph right? The Spark I believe has a top speed of 23 mph? So maybe if you wanted a far away shot go faster but be sure to slow down .
Dogsidog007 for sure. The spark isn’t super fast. If I ever get my motorcycle up and running again I’ll see if it can do this in sport mode.
Shame about the irritating music, I gave up about two thirds of the way through. You should try to find something easier on the ear. The music is not the primary aim so don't let it ruin your video.
John Sheehy exactly. The music isn’t the primary aim, so don’t let it ruin the video. Haha
I subscribed!!! Do you have social media! I gotta support you, your grind is real
For The Thrill Of It thanks so much for the support and encouragement bro! My insta is @t.d.washburn. I’m actually more active there! You’re the bomb! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
i guess it would've be better the drone follow you in the position it was at the beginning (at your side) y not changing its view from behind you
Nicc yea, so in normal active track mode it pretty much only follows from behind, even if you start it from the side. There is another mode within active track called “profile” mode that will track from the side, but I hadn’t figured that out at the time of the his video. Once my motorcycle is fixed I’ll hopefully be able to do an update vid!
Nice try. I like it..
Grt vid. So how fast does DJI say u can go for this mode?
Thanks! Their stated top speed is 31mph, but that is using sport mode. With it in 'active track' mode I found that it started to fall behind when I got up around/past 15mph
@@TaylorWashburn wow. Only 15mph? I'm an avid off road dirt biker and need something capable of 35-50mph. Any ideas? Check out Adam Riemann's 'Motonomad' film. Killer "auto/track me" drone footage.
Troy Nichols I dirtbike also wanting active track, I was looking into the spark, it says active track can follow up to 21mph, the mavic pro 2 I think can active track up to 40mph. It’s just pretty expensive
@@experial9018 On 'offerup' you can find a good used Mavic Pro for about $500 (just picked one up in near new condition for $475). In "sport" mode it goes up to 41mph so in "P" mode (regular mode) I think active track / follow me will go up to about 31 mph. We'll see! Just bought this week and havent tried it yet.
Troy Nichols alright sweet I’ll have to look
I tried this already few times and can say this is a dangerous thing. In this DJI drones u can count in automatic modes! Obstacles Avoidence is not working over 15kph. So take care That no obstacles are on the road. I crashed one spark in the trees. DJI don’t accept any guarantee. It’s not nice. Good that it was only a spark. I’ll not bu something more expensive.unfortunatly U can’t trust on this technics.
E30 Tutorials yes, that is an unfortunate thing. I was very careful to make sure it wouldn’t run into anything. But that is why I like the spark, because it is relatively cheap, so if it does mess up and break, it’s not as bad.
Could’ve did a better job narratively how fast the drone follows and how fast you’re moving. 1st gear only? 🙄
I did discuss my speed. Sport mode does not work while using active track, so drone speed is limited. Feel free to hop on your moto and do a more in depth review if you’d like though. :)
