Great vid Rich! For what seems like a simple sport, boxing has so many "weird" things happen. Or maybe with just 2 fighters to focus on (mostly) we tend to see everything. Anyway it's another reason why I love it. Even had one myself when as an amateur had a fight at a local strip mall. (which was weird enough in itself) The apron was too small and the ropes too loose. While in a clinch my back foot went out of the ring and out I went while holding on to my opponent--the fight was called as I'd twisted my ankle and my opponent sprained his wrist breaking the fall. Guess I was trying to re-enact Dempsey vs. Firpo.....😁

Please, make a full video about; "The Atomic Bull" Oliver McCall (!)
He was a WBC World Heavyweight Champion and fought some of the best HW of his era and in 76 PRO fights never been knocked-down or seriously hurt - all this and yet not much talked about. Oh he was prime Mike Tyson's chief sparring partner between 1985-1988 and same there, never went down. Again he is not talked about much.

I joined your channel a while back and probably don't comment enough. Great videos. I'm not the biggest boxing fan but am fascinated with the men themselves and what forged them into the men they were. I enjoy the documentaries more when they focus on that. I'm less interested in the extended boxing footage. This is in no way a criticism because I am sure that many of the true boxing fans really appreciate the time and effort you put into finding and editing the material. The material is be engaging because of how far back in time you go, even most boxing fans won't have seen it. I think it's important to say where your fans are coming from.

Thank you, James. The amount of boxing footage I show varies from fighter to fighter. I get where you're coming from, I'll be doing more videos on fighters where there isn't much footage but a lot of back story.

This was awesome. Love the compilation style. I recently saw Oliver McCall in a “comeback” fight in Nashville. He actually looked pretty good and hopefully has put his bad habits behind him. He’s fighting February 4th in Nashville again.
You’re right about Duran quitting. That was an Earth shattering event back in the day.
I remember vhs tape recording the Tyson/Holyfield ppv. I had to work at the Nashville speedway so I figured it would be live for me once I got home. They announced the bite/disqualification on the PA.
Thanks for a great trip down memory lane Rich!

Haha, I remember that fight with the mother and stiletto, back in '87 I think.
That McCall fight was really sad.
Golota was such a talented fighter, but seriously dirty/ mentally fragile.
Watching Holyfield jump in agony after Tyson bit part of his ear off, that must have seriously hurt!!
    Thanks Rich!

Hey Rich, another great video! I suggested this a year or two ago but since it seems like he’s FINALLY retired for good (last fight August 2023), I was wondering if you’d ever make a video or documentary on Danny Williams? He’s had one of the strangest careers out there. Beating Tyson, knocking out Potter with one arm, being on the wrong side of one of the worst refereed fights in history vs Konstantin Airich, the list goes on… And of course the sad part being he kept fighting and suffering until he was 50, for reasons only he knows. But thankfully now it seems he’s finally hung them up for good. Anyway just an idea, keep up the great work man!

    • @RichtheFightHistorian

The world may have forgiven Duran for no mas but my dad never did. He quit watching boxing after that happened. He was crestfallen. I watched the Tyson ear bite live at my friends house. It was surreal. It was disgraceful. Never could respect him after that. He squandered his immense talent on hedonism and then got angry when fighters who didn’t take that path proved to be vastly superior scientists. Thanks Rich for yet another tour de force.

  • @eol6632

Best boxing channel on RUclips Rich.
    You should check out:
2 Ton Tony Galento vs Lou Nova.
One of the dirtiest fight in history. Biting, thumbs to the eyes, throwing to the ground, wrestling on the ground, choke holds.
As for the the Duran thing, context helps a lot with that one. Duran was not in shape for that one, Leonard's team fought for the rematch being asap for this reason as the info was out there.
Some say Duran wanted out of the ring cause he thought he shit himself lol
    As for Lewis vs McCall.
McCall's management especially Don King knew how badly he needed help. They were trying to squeeze as much money out of him while they could. The man shouldn't have been allowed next to a boxing ring
Never respected Lewis & his managements part in it either.
Word was out, they knew what they were getting. An after the fight that ego maniac had the gall to hype himself after the win and acting indignant when sports journalists ask him hard questions or were critical of the fight.

Unrelated but who do you have this Saturday in David Benavidez vs Morrell? And what are your thoughts on each fighter?

    • @RichtheFightHistorian

Thank you, alpha_trooper. I have Benavidez. He upped his game a lot. I thought Morrell's last performance was kind of "meh" so I don't think he can be as effective at 175 as Benavidez.

Your right about some of these younger so called boxing experts who never saw these fights live and come up with the most inane comments. Rich, I was like your dad. I couldn’t believe Duran had quit. I picked Duran to beat Leonard in the first fight, and I picked him in the second fight as well. It was like watching Hercules or Superman quit in a fight. I have been a lifelong boxing fan, and I always felt that boxing was never the same after that bout.. you wanna go out let youDuran may have saved his career with his wins against Davy Moore, having a tough close fight against Hagler, and beating Iran Barkley. To this day, I have a tough time forgetting what happened that night though.
Btw, I think you could have a great career as a documentary narrator, or even a documentarian. You always do great work that’s well researched. Keep it up!

    • @eol6632
      @eol6632 8 дней назад +5

Not a fix. Duran just didn't train right and possibly shit himself in there. Literally.
Back in the early 80's it was probably better to walk away than losing a decision after you shut yourself in white trunks.
Funny story was his trainer would weigh him every morning.
Poor guy went nuts cause afrw mornings Duran actually gained weight. Turns out he had one of his woman bringing him fast food to his window at night lol.

I was never a Bowe fan and seeing him about to fall to Golota was great, then the nut smashing happened.
Seeing Lewis dismantle him in seconds was quality. His face was a picture. Shame Bowe ducked Lewis. I'd have liked to see lewis belt Bowe of the pedestal the american fans had him on
