The reason why I appreciate Joel as a trainer is because he actually has trainer dogs. I can't remember how many times I called up trainers to find out they don't have trainer dogs (dogs that assist your dog's training). I believe a good trainer needs a trainer dog because there are some behaviours that can only be stimulated or stopped by a trainer dog.

This mixed methods approach is EXACTLY what works with my Aussie! He needs freedom to sprint and roughhouse with other dogs, if I go 2 consecutive days without the dog park (rain, etc) he starts to get real wired and nutty. On the off days I bring him along to run errands and I can see how happy and adjusted he is when I’m consistent. This is real stuff Joel is talking about here! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

...instead of throwing the ball 50times in row....let the dog sit, throw the ball into high grass...let the dog do some turns and steps, so he forgets the exact direction you threw the ball....let the dog search its beloved ball...that way your dog is likely to be calm and stimulated mentally and physically within 20 minutes...you will be amazed how the intensity of searching by nose easily tires your dog much more than walking it for an hour.

My pit bull Nikki was a fetcher, she’d go for hours and she loved fetching with sticks so I would throw them into a huge brush pile we had behind our house and she’d root around and fine the exact stick I threw. She never came out with a different stick, had to be that one. Had the exercise with running and mental stimulation in finding the stick amongst all the others. And me being a kid was so AMAZED that she could find the right one! 😆

I have the Boxer girl version of this dog, but now almost 4 years old. Doggy day care 2-3 times a week drains her down to reasonable energy, and I should be taking her to the large dog park a couple times a week as well. The athletic ones are so fun to watch! I don't like dog parks, but at day care there are minders who call down too much nuttiness. Seriously it changed our lives. Day care 3 days a week. Pack walks, 4 miles, daily. Neighborhood play group weekly. She is in heaven and we can all live together!

She wasn't problematic per say before, but still a significant shift in attitude and behaviour. Doubled the next occasion we had to all hang around. Diversifying experience for your dog comes back with so many benefits everytime. I know this, yet it still amazes me everytime I see a new shift.

I am so fortunate to have a 130 acre park in my town (Ventura) with off leash time 6-9AM. Every morning for over 2 years, rain or shine or wind, I've been there letting my dog run. He's a male pitbull and we met 3 GSDs (all girls) and we do a route up the grassy area and run to a big vacant parking lot; 1 1/2 miles. He doesn't do well with group play with a bunch of strange dogs so we head home after 7. The 4 dogs wrestle, run, chase, look for birds etc. He is CHILL for the rest of the day! At night we walk the neighborhood for another mile! So important!

Mentally and physically he is still pretty fit, but has a sensitive/weak lower back, so he is too scared to play with other dogs now. If he does try, he always gets hurt. But he just does not feel old. He still has this crazy energy and wants to play and I can tell he is very frustrated and has pinned up energy. We still go on multiple long walks every day, and I do different search games with him, which he loves, but it is just impossible to get him physically and mentally tired. I would give all just to have him play and run around with other dogs and have that big ol smile on his face, just one more time....

My Corso pup started off as a bodyslam specialist and was obnoxious and challenging when corrected by us in the house. We couldn't trust her behaviour . I was absolutely dreading her growing up. I thought she would be a disaster and need to have a restricted life -I can't physically hold her if she wants to go. Now she's 9 months I'm stunned. She's respectful of dogs and people, she checks in with us and has a fairly solid recall. I find her a breeze to take anywhere - dog parks, beaches. I think a lot of it was she just matured, we also did plenty of playing and training (not enough walking). Always following through calmly is the biggest thing I learned from good trainers like Beckman's. I expect her to get more protective and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't tip over into anti social. It's a huge thing to have a dog companion without stress and it's my greatest ambition with my dog. We are not there yet, I won't know for another 6 months or so.

I have a 2 yo GSP and she is the definition of high energy (she climbed a tree the other day, ran down and caught a deer) She forced us to rethink how we exercise her and it benefited her greatly and has reinvigorated our 10yo boxer as well. The key is novelty, no two days are the same and always finding new places to explore.
A tired dog is a well behaved dog and while I don’t do training in the same fashion, they learn so much from you while walking with you and other dogs. We exercise for about 4 hours in the winter and 6 in the summer per day (off leash) We visit numerous parks and no day is ever the same. She will swim next to the kayak all day.
If I had to only do one thing during the day with the dogs and I didn’t have hours, walking her (even on leash) somewhere she has never been is best. Even better than running at the dog park. The boxer too. It’s not just about the physical part.

Cool watching prince chiil them both out multiple times so it does not escalate beyond play and into bullying, and check in on her like a boss. The shepherd backed down multiple times without conflict.

SO nice to get confirmation that we are on the right track with our very athletic english setter. He actually manages to play outside all day chasing birds( we are not hunters, which is very unfortunate for him), outrun a whippet ( almost managed to match the speed but has three times the endurance) at the dog park and play with us before finally crashing!. The only thing we haven't managed to do on a regular daily basis is walking him, but he goes everyday to the dog park where he meets a lot of fun and not so fun characters. Now it is a question of managing to go walk everyday and crushing recall, it is still not there.

When my dog was still with me( he past away 3.01.22) , we made at least 5miles in forest with many dogs, now I take dogs in to "babysit" them and we go to forest everyday with sometimes 4 dogs, and owners are amezed after they get their dog back! Also I work in vetclinic and you don't wanna know how often we hear that, my dog has a big yard.... No they won't move there, it's like us in the house, couch - kitchen - couch ....and they don't know why they dog are overweight and out of control.

Love your videos / have learned so much. Due to work schedule and location of daycare that we like; our young GSD can only go one day per week. We do a full day on Saturdays for him and he seems to love it. Has had a positive impact on his behavior overall along with the other things we do. Curious about the 'weirdness' you mentioned that some dogs have with a full day of daycare. Can you elaborate?

Not sure if you've seen it but he's talked about it in a recent video, may have been on the third episode of the new podcasts. Basically your dog will be over stimulated from doggie daycare all day and then when that is removed the dog will be sort of expecting that level of stimulation and it won't be there

Great info. Thanks. I have a question regarding the dogs needing to sprint. Humans are too slow so that isn't a suitable option to do. Cycling with the dog is something that could be done, but I have a largish backyard and I've been training my dogs to chase large branches. So essentially I stand in the middle and the puppies chase the stick round and round. Just for reference the branches are about 2 meters long. They sprint chasing the stick. They run for a short spurt then the other dog takes over and this is repeated round and around until they stop. If the pups are playing on their own they can run in large circles chasing the stick for 4 or 5 revolutions all the time running as fast as they can to grab the stick. Is this form of exercise considered tiring or unless they play with new dogs regularly they will never be truly exercising?

Ive found a combination of several things is best. My dog gets walked constantly and played fetch with. And when the weather is cooperating, I take him on hikes. And we have now started adding play dates with other dogs. It took a while to be able to put all these things together, he had to grow up enough. We had to get the right set up and meet people that we could invite to play in out back yard . It's not easy to make it all happen. But boy, when he is getting the right amount of stimulating exercise for his body and brain, it shows! And we are just coming out of the winter in the northeast, so it is really not easy to make it all happen. But I do at least know what he needs

I got a lot out of this video. I did not know that sometimes dogs with pent up energy will shake. Shaking is not always fear. This is news to me. Helps me understand my Australian Kelpie/Blue Heeler Mix. My pup is like Superman. Faster than a speeding bullet. Leaps tall buildings in a single bound! She is a rescue. Only had her 4 months now. I have been trying to walk her 2-4 miles everyday.I try to change the route often. I take her to my loft complex's dog run when there are no other dogs twice a day so she can run hard. She loves the herding ball, Chuck It and Flirty Pole. I am trying to get her used to being around other dogs but the progress is slow. She came from an environment where she was being attacked by another dog in the household from the time she was adopted at 9 months until I adopted her at 2 1/2 years old. But she gets along really nicely with my 3 cats. There were no cats in her life until now. She is great with people too! I hope that eventually she will not be afraid of other dogs. She likes to watch them in a big dog park nearby but on walks she is still reactive if a dog is within 10 feet of us. Your videos are helping me learn how to stay calm and handle her the proper way for corrections. Thanks!

I have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs, one is a 9 yr old female and the other is a 3 yr old male. My female is very reactive to other dogs and people, she was extremely well socialized as she was growing up with many friends to play with. At 3 yrs old she injured the CCL in her left rear leg, I couldn't afford the surgery to repair it so with the recommendation of her vet, I kept her crated with several short walks during the day, every day for about 1 yr. It healed nicely according to the vet. Then when she was 4 1/2 yrs old she injured it again. Ever since then she's been super reactive to people and other dogs. How do I get her with other dogs for playtime without re injuring her leg. She plays with my male all the time with constant supervision so she doesn't injure that CCL again.

Is the dog park or doggie daycare good mental/physical stimulation for service dogs in training? I have a 1 year 6 month old SDIT and she is also very athletic and sometimes I suspect she has pent up energy that I don’t get fully out. I’ve just always been really careful to have her meet other dogs because I don’t want that to later turn into where she thinks every dog she can play with and get distracted while trying to work. Should I be doing that same exercise regimen and dog park or doggie daycare outings with only a few dogs like you suggest? Would love to get feedback on this question. Much love and thanks!! 🐕🌺💜

He needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation but he is reactive to other dogs. We're working on his reactivity but is there a way to provide mental stimulation in the meantime?

Hello! I want to let you know that I recently have experienced this with my 1 year old Corgi who was constantly beating up on my 2 1/2 year old Corgi. It was constant playtime and he was extremely physical (herding, biting, shoulder bumping, stalking and rushing, stealing toys and chasing the older dog). Having 2 Corgis has really been stressful for me because of the younger dogs behaviors I could not get control of, he had no 'off switch', would not settle down and was always moving.
After seeing this video I started wondering how I could get my dogs in an environment where they could play. Well, it happened. 2 weeks ago my husband and I went on a road trip and boarded the dogs with a local couple who had 3 dogs, 2 large and 1 small. I was nervous about them getting along but they did well. My younger Corgi befriended those 3 month old Shepherd and was able to play so hard with this dog the he, my dog , wore out the Shepherd. For 7 days both my dogs were able to play every day with these dogs. When I got both dogs back home, I have noticed a distinct change in my younger dogs behavior. He is calmer, settles down, less reactive and more open to training. I hope this lasts for a lifetime. 😁 You were so right on that sometimes a dog has so much pent up energy that only dog play will help.them. The money we spent for the boarding was well worth it!Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have been watching your videos for a few months and really enjoy watching them and learning about dog behavior and your training methods. I currently subscribe to an online positive training program that does work well, but it's a lot of work (training always is) and I have struggled with using those techniques when I introduced the younger dog to my home because he was so 'crazy'.. Your videos are a great compliment to my library and they have helped me deal with these 2 energetic dogs.I am a lot less stressed now that both dogs are calmed down. I can't thank you enough for sharing this information!
PS: prior to their boarding, I was having to kennel them in order to stop them from constantly running around the house playing with each other, chasing, biting, etc. It was distracting me from working. (I work from home). Now they can be out and will even nap at.the same.time without being in the kennel. ♥️♥️♥️ They also can be in the backseat of my car without brawling. The older one doesn't steal toys as much either. There are so many behaviors that have improved it's crazy.

Can anyone let me know if a dog park is a good idea for a dog like this? Or does it still need to be controlled environment like it is here? We have a similar issue with this behaviour but have been told not to use dog parks due to the reactive barking etc. No aggression though. Thanks

I have a very similar dog that I adopted around a year ago. It's been very challenging because in addition to her athleticism, energy & drive she got injured & developed medial shoulder instability. This requires exercise restriction & rehab. Very difficult for her & for me.

My 13 week old ACD is quite physical when playing with other dogs (like the white dog, doing athletic moves) even if they are much bigger than her. Do I continue to let her be this way or train her to calm down? She was playing with my sisters 6 month old Australian Shepard and they were way more calmer than my puppy. And a couple times they would get upset and snap at her neck but never bite, just corrective snapping.

I wish you could recommend a trainer in my area, I'm sure you can't because there is no way for you to know every trainer in every area, but with dog training being so expensive I can't afford to make a wrong decision on what trainer to choose. I know I need help with my American pitbull terrier, but having spent a lot of money on a couple trainer's that didn't work for us, how do I find the right one ?
