In today’s day and age, it’s becoming more and more difficult to climb through the ranks to referee. Lately, the NHL has taken retired young pros who can skate, and bring them to camps. The one guy I play a skate with played in France, Germany, and Slovakia (all division 1) actually got recruited by the NHL. He went to one camp, made the cut, and the first game he ever reffed (he didn’t line it he BANDED it) was the Toronto maple leafs rookie camp. From there he now does AHL, and will soon be on a full NHL contract.

You’re kidding me lol? I played Junior A and college and thought it was crazy they let me wear the bands for a college club game 2 months in …..

I started my road to NHL officiating (my goal) after being a lifelong player/coach of 30 years and actually REALLY enjoy it… I started very casual for extra $ but ended up reffing over 300 games the past 7 months and now want to go as high as I can… I love it, and am an elite skater I just need more game experience and keep showing up and improving…. I applied for the 2022 MHL officials combine a month ago and got a letter from NHL stating due to an extremely high amount of applicants i wasn’t invited…. Oh well…Who knows, maybe they’ll accept me next year ? maybe one day I’ll make it lol…?

Doesn't hurt to date a supervisiors family member. Nepotism has run rampant for decades. Being from Guelph helps too.

I rly hope you'll make it as high as possible, but as a ref I can say that 300 games in 7 months is impossible no matter how many you take. Normally I end up reffing about 100 games a season and do it 3 times a week on average, which is very much if you have anything else going in your life

id like to point out that now in the past 3 or 4 years, everyone that has been hired to the nhl has been an ex player (ahl, echl) and got invited to camp and was in pros in the next few years. Right now all that is cared about by the nhl is if you can skate at a pro level, and they think they can teach the reffing judgement.

NHL 24 should add something like a “Be a ref career”. Maybe even a “Be a coach” type of thing.

What country is he from? I am almost positive that according to IIHF rules, no ref is allowed to participate in any game in which their own country is competing in. Any ref or linseman involved in any international competition such as World Championships or Olympics must be licensed by the IIHF. As for the 2019 IIHF licensed referees, there are only 28 referees. Half of them are female.

Just thought i'd give you a heads up, 1st European Referee in the NHL was a Swede named Markus Vinnerborg. Back in 2010.

Grinding your way up the ladder doesn't get you to the NHL, they will only look at you if you've played semi pro or major junior. I'm a level 3 official in the hockey Canada system, and although I've been reffing for years, I know my realistic ceiling is junior A, maybe major junior if I'm really lucky. As much as it would be a dream come true to officiate professional hockey, it's probably not going to happen.

They get their salary throughout a hockey season, which they receive in payments twice a month. In the offseason they are not getting paid, so they are free to do what they wish, that's why a lot of them help out at those referee training programs.
