As a drummer myself from years ago, I can honestly say, Charlie
Watts was one of the most Brilliant drummers; Why, because
he never played to impress the crowds, in fact, he only applied
as much persucusion as the song required. He never had to
work that hard---in fact, he always looked totally relaxed!
That, to me, is a freakin' Genius!

Bought a book in the 80's with Stones interviews. Also read lot of Keith interviews. In the book Bill Wyman explained that the band leader was Charlie and Keith follow him, the beat.. Sometimes Keith pushed stronger riffs, Charlie change the beat to keep the sound but afterwards he got the "command". In Keith interviews he said that between the two existing a instinct coordenation.. Seeing and listening them alive is true. Was the Stones Sound. Keith Moon was great, Billy Cobham, the fabulous John Bonham etc.. Lots of them. Ringo Star...? A few, and Won't Come Easy is is great song.. No comparation. Charlie Watts with a very simple drums got it all the sound. Not a "exibicionist" with great solo games etc. From Gimmie Shelter to Miss You, all the songs of Sticky, Exile was him behind, just a paid of attention for the records and Bill and Keith were right. He was no show off but his beat grooves. Stones sound are between the two, a fabulous Mix! Hard to explain but they are the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world..

I met Charlie Watts in Import Bazaar in Montreal in July 1972. He was beautifully dressed in a dark blue suede jacket, trimmed with red leather.......obviously made to measure and obviously very expensive. We chatted about the music scene in SW London approx 4 years previously. I had seen them play at a College and Uni. hang out, the old 1920's Hotel on Eel Pie Island in the Thames at Twickenham. He was a very gentle, quiet person, and had 2 body-guards with him. They were playing The Montreal Forum...Mick was not coming out of the hotel Charlie said. This was when Margaret Trudeau was supposed to have had a fling with Mick Jagger, but as she has said in recent years, it was not with Mick Jagger , it was with Ronnie Wood. On their recent Gig in Canada Mick Jagger said that they, (the Stones), loved the Trudeau family, and especially Margaret Trudeau very much....and he smirked. Take from that what you will. It is available on a video here on you tube. It was The Stones in Vancouver. God bless Charlie, he was a lovely person

Charle had the incredible talent for playing exactly what a song needed, no more and no less. - and if you think that is easy, try it some time. - when I played covers of Stones’ songs, I realized this and how deceptive his playing is - it’s not what you play but how - and I learned that what Charlie shared with Ginger Baker, and they were virtually the only drummers playing rock who had it, was a sense of SWING - “Casino Boogie” on Exile on Main Street is exemplary; this feel is virtually a lost art these days - both Ginger and Charlie had the same attitude for their playing: they were there to lift the band and make everybody else sound good, it wasn’t look at me - it’s a sad time for me; now with Charlie’s passing there’s only one left [BC] here on Earth of my personal pantheon (Ginger Baker - Billy Cobham - Elvin Jones - Mitch Mitchell - Keith Moon - Charle Watts - Tony Williams). - thank you for posting this tribute

The Stones roots were in the blues where the rhythm section is no frills bare bones. Charlie fit the bill. And he survived because other than Keith Richards, there was no room for another member to take any of the spot light away from Mick. So much of Charlie's longevity in the band was due to his low key personality, likeable character and his reliability, not his technical prowess as a drummer. A more gifted drummer like Keith Moon or John Bonham would not have fit in the Stones stylistically or personality wise. Charlie never let his ego get away from him which is amazing given the circumstances.

Love the beginning of "Rock and a Hard Place"..his opening is tight and the snare crack continues to the chorus when it breaks.
    Fabulous control🥁🎶😎

Charlie's drumming on Rock/Hard Place is fantastic! Anyone starting out on drums would do themselves well to play along with Charlie. He knew how to keep a beat.

Charlie was never flashy but he was ALWAYS rock solid. Ever notice how often Keith looks back at him? It is because Keith could never keep time. I started playing drums in 1973 and Charlie was my inspiration (ok, and so was the Muppet Animal).

I think one thing that should not be overlooked, is that Charlie held his sticks in "traditional grip", look at his left hand. Very few drummers do this. This style is very powerful compared to the various fingertip grip of most contemporary drummers. Listen to Charlies's commanding snare drum work. Few can compare!

Probably the best musician is the world’s greatest rock band. My 2 favorite of Charlie’s song: #1 easily is emotional rescue. #2 a little t & a, such an underapreciated song. Charlie was money on that track.

YES!! That mans kit was something you can buy in a second hand shop, and you knew when Charles played. When Mick and Keith hired him, they had no idea what kind of drummer they hired.
I never liked RS but Charles Watts is in my heart.
