  • Today we clean up and restore this Black and Decker drill from 1987. This Vintage Drill needs a full restoration because it smells like something is burning inside. This drill is from a box I found full of tools not long ago and I shot a separate video showing you all the tools I found inside.

    This video is a continuation of the previous video where I found a box full of vintage tools. Of all the tools this drill needed the most attention because it ran poorly and smelled like something burning inside. So let's tear it apart, and see if we can bring it back to close to new. If you have any tools that you want to throw out, send them to me for restoration,. Contact me for an address and I will restore your tool and make a video giving you full credit (unless you want to remain anonymous).

    This is a model 7104 3/8" drill which, going by the orange cord, was produced from 1973 to 1982. Late 1982 to 1984 models had a black cord but same green housing.

    Wonderful! I just restored my Dad's ancient drill (B&D model #7127 VSR) and it runs like new. He would be proud. Thanks for this video.

    This is probably the best selling corded drill of all time. They were very affordable and accessible. You could buy them anywhere and they weren't too expensive and your cord is original to that drill. I had the 1/4" model which ran up to 2500 RPMs. The chord was very short. It also has been used and abused and still runs very smooth. Got it from my grandfather. He bought it in the mid 1970s and has more than gotten his 💵 out of it. Great job on the restoration project man

    its a modular stacked motor housing design as it was from the 1970s to the mid 1990s it was used as the motor housing will interchange from a 1/4 in drill if its non reversing it will go on the jigsaw, hedge trimmer, and buffer polisher that uses this housing the 1/2 in drill motor housings can interchange with the scrolling jigsaw, and the early Black and Decker Air Station compressor. its when then they were made good then now its chinapride now they make them.

    Hi! How would you know if it's 110v and not 220v? I inherited my father's black and decker same as above and the plug is round. I forgot it's voltage it was a long time ago. The chuck doesn't turn I plan to lubricate it. Oh, ours only has 2 long screws and 1 short screw it has the reverse switch at the back. Thank you!

    I have the matching circular saw. I took it apart & cleaned it up and now I wouldn’t trade it for any new one. It works beautifully.
    How gay is it that I want the whole matching set? (I’m gay. I can say that. 😎)
    But yeah, a lot of old power tools had shorty orange cords like that. It makes sense. You usually need an extension cord anyway, right? 🤔

    Hey I found that same exact drill in my dads old tool box. How did you fit the rotor back in? Did you have to bend those pieces of brass holding the brushes in place to get it in?

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  3 года назад

      It's been over a year since I did that so my memory is rather fuzzy. IIRC The back part comes off as a separate piece making it easier to hold the brushes apart for installation.

    Clean your commutator and pole with a little qtip from where the brushes have touched it then take a qtip gently to the edges of the brushes

      @@ModernDIYProjects Actually after digging a bit more I believe it's a SKIL 3/8" Drill Model 457. Still can't find manual but found it advertised as "Vintage | SKIL | 3/8" Drill | Model 457 | Reversing | Adjustable Trigger Speed" no clue what the silver knob is on front of trigger. • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 года назад +1

      You have to move the chuck manually. This drill does not have a reverse function so you have to do it by hand. If the chuck is stuck, then you need to lubricate it because it does go back by hand.

  • @carobsessed35

      The sticker is not available so I did an image search, found the sticker for this drill then I printed it out on sticker paper using my printer. Sprayed a cover of clear and its a permanent glossy sticker. The grease I use automotive bearing grease since it has a higher temp rating.

    Good restoration, but be careful and DO NOT use harsh solvents like acetone, it will remove the enamel coating of the winding wires in the aramture & field coils and you end up with a very short-lived drill.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  3 года назад

      These older electrical motors had a really thick coating so I wasn't very concerned about it, but on newer stuff I would agree with you. A short cut is that you can always use a coating of clear or polyurethane to recoat the windings. I've done this before.

    Hi, couldn't find any video about this: got a noisy NOMA timer needing oil. Screws are "star", but these "stars" have only 3 "legs". Couldn't unscrew these (using a small flat screwdrvr). Do these screws unscrew normally, I mean counterclockwise? If yes, I guess they were put in place w glue... If it's the case then I guess i would have to "burn" them with a larger more resistant drill bit.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 года назад

      They may be Phillips but have junk inside them not allowing the driver to seat properly. If not then go to Harbor Freight and get a security bit set they have for around $10. Has almost every type of bit you will need and make it easier to get out. If the screws have lock tight you may need to muscle the screws out of there.
