This is the pain collectors go through and it is highly manipulated by our doll companies. I will say this: Aaliyah is black label which means they can make more of her. I learned the hard way with the Stevie Nicks black label. I had to have her. She sold out on Mattel, and I ordered her on Amazon only to be cancelled. I was scammed twice on dubious websites but got my money back. Finally I yielded to eBay and paid $300 but I knew I would actually get her. A year later she reappeared, still about 100$ and is now available. The sad truth is I was desperate and impatient and allowed myself to be manipulated. It taught me a lesson.
The marketing was so POOR across the board from all the official people. I'm based in the UK and saw pre-orders as early as Dec-Jan time via Amazon before there were any promo pics. I wasn't sure if it was legit or not, but took a gamble and got lucky! As a fan page I tried my best to share links to help other fans get the doll, but struggled to find any information for US fans, as there was no information available! 🤦🏽♀️
I literally found out about this doll the day AFTER her birthday in news outlets. wtf????? Why would Americans NOT be notified first?? I’m hoping to get her when she’s officially released on January 26 on Target.

Apparently it was meant to be a surprise for her birthday. Hayden Williams stated this himself on Twitter when her doll leaked online from Turkey and photos were being spread around that's why there wasn't any announcement until the day of. Plus Mattel Creations sent out an email about a day or two before stating that there's an announcement coming on the 16th
I was sitting at my computer several minutes before the launch, ready & waiting. I ordered the first minute & she is already shipped! Whew! Thanks for putting her on my radar. I knew she was coming, because I saw the video the Turkish RUclipsr posted, but your 2nd Aaliya video inspired me to look up the launch date and be on the lookout. If she hadn't sold out, the opportunity to purchase would have been open to the public the following day, but it sold out quickly. I do think that we might see a restock later on Target. Well, I am perplexed as well why Mattel tried to keep this launch so hush-hush. Now that you are a member, keep your eye on the Launch Calendar, there is another launch at the end of the month, though I have no idea what doll is being launched. It may be a Monster High, I don't know. I'm so glad you were able to get her, too!🥰

Apparently things got a bit delayed due to weather conditions, but she is due on my doorsteps this coming Friday. Double check your Friday emails. Maybe it went to Spam or something.
It’s rumored to be available on Sunday the 26th at participating Target locations and online too. I may be wrong but it didnt sell out in 20 minutes. It may have taken a few hrs but no less than 30min. I had checked early the next day and the timer was still running. Also, most dolls have the info near the bottom say “if any dolls are left, we will release to the public after the time for Club Members” and this doll did not have that posted.

I definitely agree that Mattel is scalping dolls. My son collects certain action figures and it's the same scenario. Did you get the new hard to find Midge? The Target near me never has anything but play line dolls, nothing better than that. Hope when your doll comes she meets your expectations. Love the screening, the outfit and the box. You could tell the people who worked on her really cared. BTW, don’t forget that celeb dolls cost more than normal because the celeb/estate gets paid, too. 💸
I was waiting for this video. The resellers purchased the bulk of the marjority of the dolls, being sold on Ebay. I was able to order one doll from Target. Then I purchased some outfits for her from Ebay and other websites. Most people purchased multiple dolls.
Every toy company makes you sign an NDA when you work there. Part of the agreement is that you are not allowed to re-sell anything that you receive from the company during your employment since that is considered theft. When I worked at Mattel, every employee received a Holiday Doll and an employee exclusive Hot Wheels car for Christmas and if you went to the Holiday party you’d receive a doll and car made for the party. One year a bunch of employees got laid off for selling their gifts on eBay because Mattel watches everyone like hawks. Always wait until you quit your job to sell company gifts, because selling a doll or a car is not worth losing a six figure job!

This was a great video. It was informative and helpful. I believe the doll will get wide released on Jan 26th. I’m not stressing it. Mattel was wrong for the launch though.
So I ended up ordering her from Target. It was available for a few hours Thursday morning. I think I woke up just in time because shortly after it was sold out.
I hope collectors got her and not scalpers who just want to resell and make money. There's currently over 100 Aalyiah dolls on ebay ranging from $126-$900, that's ridiculous!! I'm sorry you paid for a membership; I am one of your subscribers that suggested you should. I didn't get one.

Ooooh and I want to share a small Mattel rant. I ordered a doll from them once, 20 minutes later I attempted to cancel. They said it was too late. 2 days later I get a shipping notification. A week later I request a return label and they charged me return shipping to send it back. Didn't make any sense.
I couldn't believe she sold out so quickly! I was glad I was able to get her from amazon uk, unfortunately for like 70£ unstead of 55 though, so more expensive but seeing her in person today when she arrived made it all worth it. She is one of those dolls that look even better in person
My main issue with Mattel is buying dolls and waiting 2 months for delivery only to be told that it has been 'lost" and then getting a refund. This has happened to me over 4 times!!! Grrrr.
I'm glad you got one. It sounds like Mattel's Barbie drops are getting as messy as their Monster High drops. I don't mess with Mattel Creations unless there's a half-off sale or something, so if I can catch her on Target, fine, but if not then life goes on. I wonder how many of these dolls got produced.
Mattel Creations members got first dibs to get the doll If the product was still available it will be open to the public which did not happen that means that full on hand stock already sold out completely there was no official information given that was going to be available elsewhere but at Target. Now available overseas, yes on Amazon they can also be a chance that the doll could be restocked at Target or maybe at Mattel's website due to the high demand. As for Aaliyah's page thr info no longer available about availability

However, The shipping prices are correct under the size and weight of the average Mattell doll collector sized items(depending on your zip code). Mattel should be contracted with the Big 3: FedEx/ UPS/ US Postoffice and for them the rates should be super cheap domestically. Those shipping discount should go to the customer ( hypothetically)👀😆
It’s like that Barbie Deluxe Style Chase Midge Doll. It has been hard to find and I see them for $200 on eBay 😮 I am so over it but she was the only doll from that series I had wanted. It has been such a bad experience. People get so anxious over stuff and spend more making the dolls they buy from scalpers for so much more - harder for the rest of us to get. Thanks for this video!❤
There might be individual employees (or more likely, groups) who do this, and the company probably has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, tacitly allowing these employees to divert a certain number of dolls to the resale market to increase the hype. That way, if Mattel decides to reissue the doll for $99, or $159, there's a built-in customer base that doesn't even require an advertising budget.
To be honest, I don’t think Barbie was expecting how much the sale of Barbies in general would increase after the movie. Plus with inflation and production issues since COVID, they seem to be just struggling. I think they thought setting things up as pre-order would help but they’re still so far behind. I just canceled a preorder that was from August of last year that they said they weren’t expecting to fulfill until September of this year. That’s crazy. The movie seems to have reinvigorated doll collectors in general because buying Integrity dolls are now a major battle also.
the two are scary similar, but jlo has a different nose shape and mariah has more pronounced cheekbones. there are also other very subtle differences, but it's had to describe without showing images. but, this is a very great question. maybe i can touch on it in another sculpt study episode.
Well I am blessed with a great collection. So if I miss out on a few dolls it is alright. I am truly happy for all the collectors who enjoy dolls got theirs. CONGRATULATIONS!! And shame on the people who are taking advantage or trying to.
Aaliyah died August 25, 2001 at the age of 22 the sad thing is by the time she would’ve turned 23 in January of 2002 she would’ve continued filming her scenes for the matrix sequels.
I live in france and i can confirmed we had it thursday on amazon but for 77€ and that was frustrating knowing the retail price was 55, in 24h she was out of stock in europe. That being said, to me she aint a barbie signature doll but a barbie scalper doll. Eveything tells me this is really scalper friendly. Also, i have a friend who xent to malaisya and it's wild there cause they have a huge stock and sometimes sells it before the official release date, i'm guessing some scalpers have friends there and get a nice stock

Correction: Mattel did have her on their January launch calendar. Mattel did show a sneak peek for her a few days before the sale. Unfortunately, Mattel likes to build excitement for a release by limiting official press about it until a few days to a week before the sales date. It sucks.
The same version of Mariah Carey comes out every year. I think they’ll release her. There was a Monster High doll that sold out fast like this and had a second release 6 months later.
Wow! So glad that I made my own Aaliyah doll 5 years ago. I just did a new posted video the other day on my creation. I was wayyyyyy ahead of this release shenanigans. Just like a just created a Taylor Swift doll a few months ago. Just for turnouts just like this I don’t stress out as much because I have my own as good as GOLD! . I’m satisfied with my creation. If I catch it at Target, which I heard rumors for 1/26/25 great! One thing about Sacramento stores they stock them poorly here. Not many sticks are shared in my area. What is that all about? There are a lot of AA’s that live here but they will only stock about 10 or 20 but they go fast too. I will definitely buy one if it’s fairly sold. I refuse to pay 3xs the amount online. Create your own and you’ll be more relaxed, proud and grateful of your one of a kind. 😊

I quit trying to order through Mattel Creations a very long time ago because they now consistently screw over their customers after their changing how & were we ordered. Originally, it was great to order through Barbie, where the quality was great & your purchase was processed quickly, but those days are long gone for the actual Barbie doll collectors, unfortunately. 💯

Unfortunately I had not heard of the dolls release and now am forced to go to EBay. 😢 Still Aaliyah is worth it!!! I’d recommend to check out Aaron Malibu did a recreation of the Aaliyah doll in her Try Again outfit! She looks ofc GORGEOUS! ✨
Be patient. The doll may sell again soon. Don't pay Ebay prices. I did get her from Mattel as a member. She arrived the next day. I live in Pennsylvania so my FedEx shipment was quick. The only problem was her hair was not properly packaged. I don't know how it passed quality control. I had to open the packing to fix the misplaced strands. I collect in the box. Now I need to buy a second doll for my boxed doll collection. At least I have one I can dress and redress. You'll get her at a reasonable price. Just be patient.

Mattel has a limit of 1 membership per email address and 5 memberships per household. It is possible for two people at 2 different addresses to have 10 memberships in total. People can use their friends' addresses and email accounts to game the system easily.
I was heartbroken when I couldn’t get a doll, I couldn’t get one when they started doing pre-orders because it was supposedly only for “Mattel members” or something, so, I was looking forward to buying it after work on Sunday since they were over there at Target, but it was already sold out, I was upset until my stepdad found someone who had ORDERED the doll and supposedly didn’t give a shit about it, so, don’t buy something then not give a shit about it, someone out there could be wanting it and are really upset.
I collect X-men Figures, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Era and Sailor Moon Figures. When I saw that Aaliyah doll I said dammmn I think I wanna collect dolls now, shes stunning, and the FIT lol. As a 90's baby I think with Mattel much like Hasbro is aware that they are not producing toys for kids anymore, adults are the prime consumers and because we have FOMO and are prone to nostalgia they take advantage. I've noticed the toy industry doing a lot more "exclusive releases" on their website or using amazon or target. Most times these figures never end up in stores. I think the preorder game is a tactic to gauge how many people are actually interested in the item so they don't mass produce, and if the figure does perform well they can always put in another order and re-lease later in the year. Given the surge of interest I'm sure they will produce more. I love what you said about Laws of Attraction. When I wanted certain figures I would visualize the figure being in my collection, then I would take it a step further and make a space for it in my collection and say when I find it I will put it here. I think about how I'm going to pose it. I screenshot it. It really works bc sooner or later the figure is made or I find it lol
i love this entire comment, a lot to think about. the part about 90's babies, i think that was the last generation that truly enjoyed barbies as a play thing. before the internet came and distracted us from using imagination. And those kids are now adults, who find barbie nostalgic. So it makes sense to market to more adults than they used to.

Well had 2 in my hands at one of my local targets and as soon as I tried to check them out the employee at the check out line came running over to me and said let me see that and he said they not available until tomorrow he took them right out of my hands and said yeah these aren't available until tomorrow I saw 4 of them on the floors and i tried to pick 1 up for me and one for my mom and I couldn't get them he said come back tomorrow first come first serve and it's only one per custom and target are only having 4 or 1 per store

Moments later his mom gets in line . Store opens and they make a b-line to the back. I go to the toy aisle and nothing. An employee asks me and another woman if we were looking for the doll and takes us to the back. Meanwhile, another employee from the back comes out and gives three to the young guy, his mom and two to another guy who I never saw waiting. All the store had were five and was told there wasn't a limit per customer.
Mattel stinks too pricey and hard to get I would love this so she could be remade into The Queen of the Dammed but you stink the best dolls are insanely priced and too hard to get.

As an Aaliyah fan.. i resoect that they went and made one, but the doll is lackluster to me as i am NOT easily impressed, the face is too dark and not aaliyqh toned enough, the hair should have been molded and laid to a true aaliyah standard even down to the roots and edges being like her real life hair (esp because hayden williams worked on the detail he should have known better) this whole doll was rushed abd they slapped a couple of aaliyahs moles on them. Im honestly not impressed with tye doll but i think the outfit is okay and the fact that we keep her legacy alive is something great regardless. But these people need to leave her alone if they not gonna do stuff right. Hayden even mentioned her own brother Rashad work3d on this doll and if he did... I'm STILL not impressed. #nothappy

I definitely agree that Mattel is scalping dolls. My son collects certain action figures and it's the same scenario. Did you get the new hard to find Midge? The Target near me never has anything but play line dolls, nothing better than that. Hope when your doll comes she meets your expectations.

Love the screening, the outfit and the box. You could tell the people who worked on her really cared. BTW, don’t forget that celeb dolls cost more than normal because the celeb/estate gets paid, too. 💸

I was waiting for this video. The resellers purchased the bulk of the marjority of the dolls, being sold on Ebay.
I was able to order one doll from Target. Then I purchased some outfits for her from Ebay and other websites.
Most people purchased multiple dolls.

I woke up a 4:00am to get her.
Every toy company makes you sign an NDA when you work there.
Part of the agreement is that you are not allowed to re-sell anything that you receive from the company during your employment since that is considered theft.
When I worked at Mattel, every employee received a Holiday Doll and an employee exclusive Hot Wheels car for Christmas and if you went to the Holiday party you’d receive a doll and car made for the party.
One year a bunch of employees got laid off for selling their gifts on eBay because Mattel watches everyone like hawks.
Always wait until you quit your job to sell company gifts, because selling a doll or a car is not worth losing a six figure job!

This was a great video. It was informative and helpful. I believe the doll will get wide released on Jan 26th. I’m not stressing it. Mattel was wrong for the launch though.
So I ended up ordering her from Target. It was available for a few hours Thursday morning. I think I woke up just in time because shortly after it was sold out.

Ooooh and I want to share a small Mattel rant. I ordered a doll from them once, 20 minutes later I attempted to cancel. They said it was too late. 2 days later I get a shipping notification. A week later I request a return label and they charged me return shipping to send it back. Didn't make any sense.

I couldn't believe she sold out so quickly! I was glad I was able to get her from amazon uk, unfortunately for like 70£ unstead of 55 though, so more expensive but seeing her in person today when she arrived made it all worth it. She is one of those dolls that look even better in person

My main issue with Mattel is buying dolls and waiting 2 months for delivery only to be told that it has been 'lost" and then getting a refund. This has happened to me over 4 times!!! Grrrr.

Mattel Creations members got first dibs to get the doll If the product was still available it will be open to the public which did not happen that means that full on hand stock already sold out completely there was no official information given that was going to be available elsewhere but at Target. Now available overseas, yes on Amazon they can also be a chance that the doll could be restocked at Target or maybe at Mattel's website due to the high demand. As for Aaliyah's page thr info no longer available about availability

I think employees scalp as a side hustle
I think people invest in scalping organizations
Some doll collectors do it to offset the pricing of doll collections.
However,
The shipping prices are correct under the size and weight of the average Mattell doll collector sized items(depending on your zip code).
Mattel should be contracted with the Big 3: FedEx/ UPS/ US Postoffice and for them the rates should be super cheap domestically.
Those shipping discount should go to the customer ( hypothetically)👀😆
Mattel watches eBay closely!

It has been such a bad experience. People get so anxious over stuff and spend more making the dolls they buy from scalpers for so much more - harder for the rest of us to get. Thanks for this video!❤
There might be individual employees (or more likely, groups) who do this, and the company probably has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, tacitly allowing these employees to divert a certain number of dolls to the resale market to increase the hype. That way, if Mattel decides to reissue the doll for $99, or $159, there's a built-in customer base that doesn't even require an advertising budget.

I bought one on eBay at a good price some of those prices were insane.
To be honest, I don’t think Barbie was expecting how much the sale of Barbies in general would increase after the movie. Plus with inflation and production issues since COVID, they seem to be just struggling. I think they thought setting things up as pre-order would help but they’re still so far behind. I just canceled a preorder that was from August of last year that they said they weren’t expecting to fulfill until September of this year. That’s crazy.
The movie seems to have reinvigorated doll collectors in general because buying Integrity dolls are now a major battle also.

the two are scary similar, but jlo has a different nose shape and mariah has more pronounced cheekbones. there are also other very subtle differences, but it's had to describe without showing images. but, this is a very great question. maybe i can touch on it in another sculpt study episode.

Well I am blessed with a great collection. So if I miss out on a few dolls it is alright. I am truly happy for all the collectors who enjoy dolls got theirs. CONGRATULATIONS!! And shame on the people who are taking advantage or trying to.
Aaliyah died August 25, 2001 at the age of 22 the sad thing is by the time she would’ve turned 23 in January of 2002 she would’ve continued filming her scenes for the matrix sequels.
And now I see her for sale for over a 100.00

I live in france and i can confirmed we had it thursday on amazon but for 77€ and that was frustrating knowing the retail price was 55, in 24h she was out of stock in europe. That being said, to me she aint a barbie signature doll but a barbie scalper doll. Eveything tells me this is really scalper friendly.
Also, i have a friend who xent to malaisya and it's wild there cause they have a huge stock and sometimes sells it before the official release date, i'm guessing some scalpers have friends there and get a nice stock

Correction: Mattel did have her on their January launch calendar. Mattel did show a sneak peek for her a few days before the sale. Unfortunately, Mattel likes to build excitement for a release by limiting official press about it until a few days to a week before the sales date. It sucks.

Wow! So glad that I made my own Aaliyah doll 5 years ago. I just did a new posted video the other day on my creation. I was wayyyyyy ahead of this release shenanigans. Just like a just created a Taylor Swift doll a few months ago. Just for turnouts just like this I don’t stress out as much because I have my own as good as GOLD! . I’m satisfied with my creation. If I catch it at Target, which I heard rumors for 1/26/25 great! One thing about Sacramento stores they stock them poorly here. Not many sticks are shared in my area. What is that all about? There are a lot of AA’s that live here but they will only stock about 10 or 20 but they go fast too. I will definitely buy one if it’s fairly sold. I refuse to pay 3xs the amount online. Create your own and you’ll be more relaxed, proud and grateful of your one of a kind. 😊

I quit trying to order through Mattel Creations a very long time ago because they now consistently screw over their customers after their changing how & were we ordered. Originally, it was great to order through Barbie, where the quality was great & your purchase was processed quickly, but those days are long gone for the actual Barbie doll collectors, unfortunately. 💯
just got off the phone with a customer service rep at mattel creations yesterday. for 40 minutes we were going around in circles! it was so frustrating.

I’m from the US and I am piiiissssed! I am an avid Aaliyah stan and don’t have a membership with Target, finding out the day of Aaliyah’s birthday there was a doll in her honor got me so hyped! Unfortunately I had not heard of the dolls release and now am forced to go to EBay. 😢 Still Aaliyah is worth it!!! I’d recommend to check out Aaron Malibu did a recreation of the Aaliyah doll in her Try Again outfit! She looks ofc GORGEOUS! ✨
Be patient. The doll may sell again soon. Don't pay Ebay prices. I did get her from Mattel as a member. She arrived the next day. I live in Pennsylvania so my FedEx shipment was quick. The only problem was her hair was not properly packaged. I don't know how it passed quality control. I had to open the packing to fix the misplaced strands. I collect in the box. Now I need to buy a second doll for my boxed doll collection. At least I have one I can dress and redress. You'll get her at a reasonable price. Just be patient.

Mattel has a limit of 1 membership per email address and 5 memberships per household. It is possible for two people at 2 different addresses to have 10 memberships in total. People can use their friends' addresses and email accounts to game the system easily.

I was heartbroken when I couldn’t get a doll, I couldn’t get one when they started doing pre-orders because it was supposedly only for “Mattel members” or something, so, I was looking forward to buying it after work on Sunday since they were over there at Target, but it was already sold out, I was upset until my stepdad found someone who had ORDERED the doll and supposedly didn’t give a shit about it, so, don’t buy something then not give a shit about it, someone out there could be wanting it and are really upset.
They still may have them. Because I know my mom said when she worked there. That they kept some for later dates. But they may boost up the price.

I collect X-men Figures, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Era and Sailor Moon Figures. When I saw that Aaliyah doll I said dammmn I think I wanna collect dolls now, shes stunning, and the FIT lol. As a 90's baby I think with Mattel much like Hasbro is aware that they are not producing toys for kids anymore, adults are the prime consumers and because we have FOMO and are prone to nostalgia they take advantage. I've noticed the toy industry doing a lot more "exclusive releases" on their website or using amazon or target. Most times these figures never end up in stores. I think the preorder game is a tactic to gauge how many people are actually interested in the item so they don't mass produce, and if the figure does perform well they can always put in another order and re-lease later in the year. Given the surge of interest I'm sure they will produce more. I love what you said about Laws of Attraction. When I wanted certain figures I would visualize the figure being in my collection, then I would take it a step further and make a space for it in my collection and say when I find it I will put it here. I think about how I'm going to pose it. I screenshot it. It really works bc sooner or later the figure is made or I find it lol
i love this entire comment, a lot to think about. the part about 90's babies, i think that was the last generation that truly enjoyed barbies as a play thing. before the internet came and distracted us from using imagination. And those kids are now adults, who find barbie nostalgic. So it makes sense to market to more adults than they used to.

Well had 2 in my hands at one of my local targets and as soon as I tried to check them out the employee at the check out line came running over to me and said let me see that and he said they not available until tomorrow he took them right out of my hands and said yeah these aren't available until tomorrow I saw 4 of them on the floors and i tried to pick 1 up for me and one for my mom and I couldn't get them he said come back tomorrow first come first serve and it's only one per custom and target are only having 4 or 1 per store

Moments later his mom gets in line . Store opens and they make a b-line to the back. I go to the toy aisle and nothing. An employee asks me and another woman if we were looking for the doll and takes us to the back. Meanwhile, another employee from the back comes out and gives three to the young guy, his mom and two to another guy who I never saw waiting. All the store had were five and was told there wasn't a limit per customer.
Mattel stinks too pricey and hard to get I would love this so she could be remade into The Queen of the Dammed but you stink the best dolls are insanely priced and too hard to get.

As an Aaliyah fan.. i resoect that they went and made one, but the doll is lackluster to me as i am NOT easily impressed, the face is too dark and not aaliyqh toned enough, the hair should have been molded and laid to a true aaliyah standard even down to the roots and edges being like her real life hair (esp because hayden williams worked on the detail he should have known better) this whole doll was rushed abd they slapped a couple of aaliyahs moles on them. Im honestly not impressed with tye doll but i think the outfit is okay and the fact that we keep her legacy alive is something great regardless. But these people need to leave her alone if they not gonna do stuff right.
