- K3 has been a seven year project to create and redefine state of the art for vinyl playback. We wanted to set a new mark for the turntable, forming an international collaboration with the world's top experts in direct drive turntable design, motor control, and tonearm technology.
This is just the first video, more will be coming, including a big one at OK Foundry (big shout out to Jamie and crew in Richmond for all their incredible work!), one covering the power supply, platter hold down system, Schröder tonearm, and more.

Now this is the turntable I wanted to hear more about.
Oma is my end game. A few more years and I will hopefully start acquiring my peices. Amazing. This is where form and function become one and indistinguishable. It is a singularity.
OMA never disappoints pushing the envelope.
I'd love to hear this. When I first saw it I didn't love the aesthetics, but over time it has grown on me. It reminds me of a massive ocean liner that is imperturbable, and your description of the motor's power aligns well with this image. I only wish the industry would put as much thought and care into the vinyl medium it plays. That has long been my hesitation with going beyond a certain price point (say 10-15k) with turntables.

Sadly my wife stated we have to pay the house off first. Haha. Seriously, this looks like it could be the best turntable ever built. Maybe this will inspire innovation of lower cost solutions using the knowledge gained building this beauty. Then mere mortals like me might be able to afford one. Thanks so much for all the research, $$$$$ and sharing this work. I am looking forward the the next video!
BTW, I had planned on selling all my belt drive turntables before this and this confirmed what I don't like about them. I really prefer the consistent timing of the direct drives.

I had to laugh when you mentioned our boy by his appropriate name, "Rocket Man", very funny. In all sincerity as pretty experienced turntable guy, I have no doubt that your table will set standards that will probably never be matched. As to the untrained eye, it may appear simple, well think again . Just thinking about your choice of materials, just the thought of how hard it is to work with cast iron as opposed to aluminum is simply mind boggling. Congradulatios on a superb achievement Jonathan

To make a wild generalisation to the effect that all belt drive turntables are "a Joke" is, frankly, a joke. Every engineering solution to the challenge of record replay has compromises - that applies to all the propulsion systems including belt, idler and direct drive.

The td 124 that he mentions in the video is a belt / idler hybrid. The Platine Verdier (another belt) is considered by many as one of the most elegant turntable solutions in recent history.

Absolutely amazing. I must confess that the mass issue confuses me. Some say the more mass, the better it is. Some others feel that mass is a hindrance. To me it makes sense to have only the mass that is necessary. No more, no less. I believe in simplicity so I agree with you about some of the very high end turntables look like something from a gothic science fiction movie. I like very mush your approach on your turntable. Well done.

Really sweet. So tough to get perspective on. Having the pedigree it has is definitely cool. Great industrial character. CHORD electronics has a great approach in a different area, but to me the approach HAS ago come from the same place. Passion for music.
Calling belt drive decks "a joke" is the equivalent of calling the boxy and inherently resonate cabinet construction of Fleetwood's DeVille a joke when compared to that of the highly evolved inert construction of the B&W 803 D4. Different technologies for sure, but not "a joke". You just come off as pretentious.

And yes, machinists, CNC or otherwise, do care about surface finish. Maybe not in every single instance but they do.
Well, now you can make a Neumann cutting lathe version out of cast iron. It will be an engineering marvel.
If you are going to go that far I don't know why they wouldn't put a linear tracking tone arm on it. I know affordable linear trackers are problematic but in the Uber high end world.... linear tracking is technically better and any reliability shortcomings or whateverccan be overcome.

Indeed a good system but if combined with a tangential tracking and a magnetic tonearm would perhaps improve its performance
A superb example of precision engineering which is pointless due to the limitations of the vinyl record medium.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!
For this to be useful the original masters would need to be cut on a similar close to perfectly timed platter. From what I have seen this is not the case

When I visited Bernie Grundman I saw he had Scully lathes with a Technics SP-10 mk. 3 mounted about 2 feet below the platter and connected with a torque tube. BTW, a few years ago I sent you an original Commonwealth 12D manual, hope it served you well. That kinda' looks like an old Presto lathe, but a little more industrial/architectural. When Presto closed down many of their engineers went over to Scully. Had a Presto 800 tape deck. Shoulda' kept it. I ramble.
Next year we will pursue a project to supply mastering engineers with Neumann and Scully lathes our new motor to improve their work. Thanks for your comments and support, best wishes for 2023, Jonathan
These products are very fine, and made for wealthy audio lovers. I am not, but I am wealty in many other ways. My mint 62 Garrard, and Beogram 3000 are priceless to me. What about you using schielded magnetic bearings that have virtually no noise and little vibration and friction? Some are used in a good Tesla Turbine.

Wow quite a thing! My only concern will be, what impact all the cast iron will have on the magnetic fields of pickup and motor. Wonderful watch by the way! What a delight to see a classical size watch for males rather than the vulgar mega sizes way to common now a days. Wonder what watch it is? Patek 96 perhaps 🤔
Thank you for your comments, and as for watches, couldn't agree with you more! I only wear 32-36mm watches, that one was a nice Eterna automatic. But it does point to an aesthetic which I mention in the video- things should be the right size, neither too big nor small. Appreciate your attention to detail. @@oswaldsmillaudio what a strange occurrence. In my childhood my father had an Eterna Automatic with a black dial purchased around 1955. He purchased it from a watchmaker friend whom he had met during his one year conscription to the army. Sadly the item was lost during a break in at his home around 1990. Body language is very odd. Like what your saying but the unnatural hand gestures and scripted body language screams - I’m full of shit. Not saying that’s the case, but the BL is hard to look past
There's a lot of ingenuity in the design, for sure. However, there's a ton of marketing mumbo-jumbo in the explanation... Aerospace this, aerospace that... We're in 2022 and all the technology mentioned, however expensive, is readily available.
The OMA K3 looks like the Guggenheim Museum in California. Most idler players have "cassette deck" types of layouts, and are a bit more complicated than belt drives. Idler's are not direct drive in the true sense. They require a stepped spindle with a intermediate rubber ring to drive the platter. True direct drives have a single motor with a variable pitch/speed electrical controller.
I am not sure I agree with you on belt drive turntables. Sure, they have potential to not be as accurate as direct drive, but so many machines use belts that are absolute precision machines, including some turntables. Some of the tape machines that older recordings were mastered on had belt drive of some kind, so the argument that belt drive cannot be accurate with musical timing is your own opinion, not a scientific fact. I know some professional tape machines are direct drive, but not all were in the day.
I have known some extremely inaccurate direct drive and idler drive, even on a professional level, introduce there own noise to the recording, more so than belt does.
How much? That's the question

Comparing it to Billion Dollar Telescopes and Nuclear Weapons, is just way more Turntable than anyone need to use for listening to a $20.00 Album. I guess if your Rich and Board and allowed to Dream until your Dreams come true ? I’ve been stuck in the 70’s with my music . Old Klipsch speakers and a old Marantz all old and my be old but just how much music can people stand ? Regular people spend extra money on things their ears can not hear. Very nice but ? It use to be you’d buy a nice system and expect to use it for years. Quality today is hard to find and give my hat to your pursuit of it but your beating a Dead Horse. It's incredible how this man can talk for 38 minutes without adding any concept to what is expressed in the already sparse presentation on their website.
Faced with a turntable that aspires to the role of a new reference, I would have appreciated a more serious in-depth analysis with significant technical details instead of this generic self-celebratory exposition.
Just buy a Lenco.. Trust me, you'll be just fine.
