  • This is a video talking about the recently announced “Trace” product for the Shaper Origin ecosystem. It talks through pros and cons and shows you a way to trace your hand drawn sketches and transform them from paper to an SVG, using free tools.

    I’m ordering my SO next month and you have become my go to guy. Festool should send you a shop full of tools for the people you’re probably bringing in!!

      Welcome to the Shaper Origin family. Thank you for your kind words and happy to hear that my vids are helpful to you. And regarding Festool: Nah, not necessary, I already have a shop full of tools and I’d rather keep my Swiss neutrality 🤣🤣🤣

    I agree with you. We need a custom frame - scan with the app, and transfer into the SVGs. But, Photo scanner does not do the same thing as Trace!

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  2 месяца назад

      No, you need to do further steps after Photo Scanner

    I CANT WAIT for my TRACES!!! I pre-ordered 2, 1 for myself and 1 for my wife. The thing I'm curious about with Trace is whether it uploads to the Hub, then the user will need to modify in Studio, or if the vector goes straight to the machine. For unsuspecting users who don't have a paid Studio license, Trace might not be the silver bullet

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  10 месяцев назад

      Looking forward to hear what you use them for 😆 I have no idea if you need Studio or not, but I also didn’t research it due to lack of interest. Why did you buy two? Will you use them in parallel?

    • @inlandwoodandresin
      @inlandwoodandresin 10 месяцев назад

      @Woodensoul the promo videos are vague and don't really describe the actual digital workflow. I ordered because my wife uses a Cticut cutter for her business, and she thought I'd would help with her designing. I wonder how long until people hack the app and figure out how to make their own frames?

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  10 месяцев назад

      Got you! Hacking apps is actually rather tricky, I don’t know if that will happen… Hopefully they didn’t tie that to Studio, that wouldn’t be cool at all…

    Great video! I have backed Trace - the one off cost makes so much more sense to me than an annual rental but I'm not sure how much I will use it. I really like Inkscape and use it as you described (and this is about the best, simple, how-to video I have seen for it).
    I really need to find a simple program to make and merge shapes. The one Shaper made was brilliant in the BETA but now it's an annual subscription, I just can't justify that cost as an enthusiast using it a couple of times a year. Are there any simple programs to help you do this?

      Hi Nils. Great to hear that Trace will be useful to you 👊🏼 Regarding making and merging shapes: What are you looking for? Is Inkscape too difficult to use? Did you try out Affinity?

      Agree on SO charging subscription fees for use of the tool you already purchased. It feels like a rip off somehow. I get it for a more commercial setting but for they hobbyist, hard pass.

    Does your method maintain aspect ratio?

    • @Woodensoul

      Yes, it does

      @@Woodensoul In the question above does aspect ratio = scale? If this method maintains scale it does seem like the trace frame is pretty useless...

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  7 месяцев назад

      @@Ko3n3k33 I don't think that in this question aspect ratio = scale. Let's imagine that you have a 10x15 square. The aspect ratio here would be 2x3. My method maintains the aspect ratio, meaning you won't have a distortion in your scan. Scale would mean that your scan should have 10x15 in the svg, which this method won't guarantee. You can obviously very quickly modify the scale in the file to fit the numbers you need.

    • @Ko3n3k33
      @Ko3n3k33 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks! I wasn't sure. The only application I can think of for trace is to maintain scale. (I.E. I need to cut a shape to exactly fill the inside of a hollow, carbon fiber, structure that has a number of complex curves. I think I can trace the 3d shape, use the frame to convert the trace to a couple SVGs (the structure is ~4' wide), then stitch the multiple SVGs up to create one large SVG, and then use origin to cut the bulkhead that will fill the carbon fiber shape). The shaper team said they had internal success tiling the frame with indexing marks to create SVGs that were larger than an individual frame... Not sure if they meant physically tiling multiple frames on top of each other or doing sort of what I described above... I'm super new to all of this so please let me know if my thought process is flawed. Thanks for the response and for all your videos, they have been very helpful.

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  7 месяцев назад

      @@Ko3n3k33 That sounds way more complicated like what I would ever need, so you lost me there. I think you have a 3D shape that you need to scan from each side? In that case, I am not even sure if Trace would be helpful, given that with trace, your object should ideally be coplanar with the trace frame, to maintain the ratios. If your object is 3 dimensional, that will be hard to achieve. In that case, I think the method I have shown might even work better, although you would have to fiddle around to get the scales right.
      Thanks for your kind words, I am super happy to hear that my videos have been helpful. And welcome to the Shaper family :D
