I'm probably the biggest Marvin Gaye fan you can find . I'm 76 I heard Donny Hathaway do this in early seventies when it first came out simply outstanding one of the best at what he does this young man in this band. Wow tremendous job. Dueling pianos simply awesome I'm a boxing coach but I played in the late 60s and early 70s I played a Hammond B3 organ start playing again almost fifty years later I was so excited to play again I've got almost 6 Hammond organs and one Fender Rhodes. Nowhere in the class of these guys they're simply beautiful job I got carried away a little❤
I'm obsessed with Donny Hathaway's arrangement of this song. It makes me so happy that you appear to love Donny Hathaway's version as much as I do. And you guys totally nailed it -- with TWO rhythm guitars, just like Donny's band. And I'm pretty sure I heard a Fred White drum fill in there. Thank you for this
Man oh man when I was a teenager Summer of 1971 bought the album What's Going On in LA caught the bus back home to Okalahoma and when I got there I played this album before I unpacked my bags. Then later I bought an eight track and played it in my Mother's car. And I heard a lot of version of this song, but this cover by this cover in Donny Hathaway style was just great. Thumbs up all the way fellows.
Congratulations on the performance. Incredible and impeccable execution of a classic. It was a pleasure to save, enjoy, review and share. Really !!!!!!!
Josh Teitelbaum, so many drummers I've heard play that version yet go to hats top of the 2nd verse, instead of staying on the ride first 4 bars of that verse, I thank you!
@@rento1973For sure, Donny's simplicity and emphasis on the backbeat with strong syllables and tastefully restrained use of vocal runs seemed to punch into the rhythm like no other. This singer is fantastic, but he plays around the grid, doesn't start lines on beat or really emphasize the backbeat, and his use of vocal runs is a little cacophanous. I'll lock into Donny's vocal rhythm any day over this one
Jacob if you read comments. Please upload The Kings Return. I Love that song. You gave me the CD years ago in NY with the family. I played it until it played no more. Please upload the song to RUclips.
Great rendition of the tune. Question about the bass player: Did he attend the University of Denver for a shortwhile (about one year) back in 2007 or 2008 (or somewhere within that time frame?
Mother, mother There's too many of you crying Brother, brother, brother There's far too many of you dying You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today, eh eh Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today, oh oh oh Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me, so you can see Oh, what's going on What's going on Yeah, what's going on Ah, what's going on Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong Oh, but who are they to judge us Simply 'cause our hair is long Oh, you know we've got to find a way To bring some understanding here today Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality C'mon talk to me So you can see What's going on Yeah, what's going on Tell me what's going on
Great cover! I’ve always loved this version on Donny Hathaway’s live album. Thank you for doing this! Only critique I have is the lyrics are “picket lines and picket signs” not “ticket lines and picket lines”, other than that, you nailed it!

VOCALIST TOTALLY MAXED IT OUT FROM ALL PERSPECTIVES. RAISED THE BAR ABOVE 100%. NATURALY.

Would love to do a Roberta Flack- Donnie Hathaway tribute with Jacob. Im a keyboardist as well. Been singing their music too since the 70s.
Awesome cover of Donny! Like like! A bit rushy but love it, great voice and sound y'all
Rushy? I think they somehow managed to suck all the swinging groove out of this. I can’t explain how, but there’s just something wierd about it!

Great rendition of the tune. Question about the bass player: Did he attend the University of Denver for a shortwhile (about one year) back in 2007 or 2008 (or somewhere within that time frame?

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying

To bring some lovin' here today, eh eh

Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
C'mon talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
Well alrighty then. Thank you RUclips for this suggestion!

He got it on the second pass...lol
Great cover!! But isn't this a Marvin Gaye song?
It's done as the donny hathaway's rendition from his 1972 live LP hence the title
gio-vanni ri-bi-si on fender rhodes...ha ha ha ha.....okay you had to be there i guess..
Who the hell voted this thumbs down?
