Thank you. You're the first that explained the filters in context of the recent firmware. The manual explains the functions as it was before this update so I was thinking I had a bad radio. I slightly suspect it was a firmware change but your video confirmed it.
You can reset the changes to the filters with the keys that used to adjust bandwidth. Functionm then log press either F-L or F-H the rest each of the new adjustment.
No problem! I don't think I like the new filter setup. Mostly because it doesn't match the manual or the silk screening on the rig.
I wish Xeigu would focus on what are a few good and popular products getting them really right rather than having to push out new products. The G90 is probably their most successful radio, and is still a radio very much worth buying, why they don't just nail the firmware is one of life's great mysteries

Thanks for your review and testing!The missing feature I would eagerly upgrade the G90 firmware to have is DSP for adjustable audio noise reduction like bhi uses for their speakers. Otherwise I'm staying with version 1.75.

Thanks, this is finally helping me to understand the filter adjustments, all the other vids that I have watched address filter adjustment with the old firmware. This is finally making sense to me and my new Xiegu g90. Whewww, I thought I was never going to figure this out. Thanks Again!
I hate that they didn't publish a new manual or stick with the existing filter buttons. The new way works and is more icom-like.

for CW the inability to just chose the bandwidth makes it a pain in the butt to use. At the very beginning it was like now, then I asked them to change it and they did.
Now back to square zero. No good....

Yep. Having the variable filter versus playing with BPF edges was way better. This ‘new’ vamp of the original goofiness sux. The U-D/L-D fix is an improvement though.
You can get back to the default filter settings by pressing the FUNC button and then F-L to reset the lower and F-H to reset the high.

Thank you for the video! Very helpful to verify that I'm not crazy (at least not because of this). I came to the same conclusion you did.
This really sucks. I may have to figure out how to revert my firmware. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm mostly CW only. I used to leave my CW filter on about 1khz so that I could turn the knob and hear everything as I tuned, since the G90 does 1khz tuning and the next more granular option is .1khz which is way too slow. Also, I used to quick switch to CWR for a narrower filter. The CW and CWR seem to now share the filter options so there is no difference between those options.
If I can't revert the firmware, anyone want to buy a G90 HIHI

comments for 1.79 v3. Good choice to use digimode directly with line in and out but filters now are wider than before. I can't use a narrow filter, before the update i could use a narrow filter on a weak station in FT8 in any freq. of band 100-3000 (for example from 500 to 700 hz). Now i can do only a 100 hz narrow band at 1500 hz. if i have a station on 550 hx i can't select it. IZ3QAQ

Hi, thanks for keeping us updated with the G90! - just to let you know, at 05:50 you read out the instructions for resetting the BPFs back to default, but during the demo you say there doesn't seem to be a way to do it :) ...... With the 'Func' light on you simply press the 'F-L' and 'F-H' buttons and the 'skirts' go back to default positions. I was pointed to your channel by the 'Xiegu G90 Users' page on Facebook, and am now subscribed.

Very, very helpful video, thanks. As a new user of the G90 I really couldn't make sense out of this band pass filter stuff. Especially since my (2nd hand) unit was shipped with the original documentation that no longer matches its firmware version.

How can one tell if the firmware is 1.79b02 or b03?
I have the pink filter and U-D and L-D modes:)
Curious if I have the version thst fixed the AM broadcast band issue.
The easiest way to tell is to put your firmware of choice on it yourself. There is a 1.8 version out, might as well go all the way!

It’s not very loud now. With it crank to “11” it seems to be about half of what it was.
@@W9TSB at least we know it's a software thing and not a limit in the hardware. They should just open source it and let us fix it.

I've sat out the more recent updates for my G90. I always say, "if it ain't broke, don't break it." I don't think Xiegu got that memo though.

I'm not convinced on the filters, but I did use and love the old way a lot. But I'll persist and see if I can get used to it. I'm loving the U-D mode selector.
Yeah, I don't like the new filters either.
So I tried the U_D mode and rear port and get errors in WSJT-X. It only works with the cable plugged in to the port on the head. I’m on a MAC. Don’t know f that makes a difference.
Are you talking about audio cables or the CAT cable?
@@temporarilyoffline audio. It’s the cable that plugs in to the DE-19s CIV. Looks like an Aux cable.

You'll find that the G90 is pretty unanimously loved. It is portable and the 20 watts is good to get out a little further than true QRP. I love mine for POTA.

I would recommend this radio as a good starter radio for anybody. Anything "better" is a few hundred out of its price range.
Last Wednesday, I had a reception problem (everything else worked except no signal came in but static
) on my Xiegu G90, so i did a firmware update and the radio bricked. Tried previous firmware updates. NOGO. Called HRO in Portland, Bill said, no worries still under warranty, we will send you a new one and you send that one to Minnesota for repair.
That's pretty awesome! Glad they stood up so fast!
Things I want to see.
1) BPF - Adjust the width control function or on SSB a choice of 2.3khz, 2.1khz, 1.8khz. Make button F-L to F-W
2) BPF - Shift the band pass center frequency. Make button F-H to F-C
3) DSP - Noise reduction like the function in SGC and BHI DSP chips. The SGC ADSP2 really cleans up the static.
4) FreeDV mode internal to the radio.
The current filter is annoying compared to my FT-817.
Yeah, I get the impression the devs don't "radio" as much as they code, so they are meeting a spec on a page instead of using it and "feelings the answer.
@@temporarilyoffline another issue is CW band width. It's fixed at 500cycles. When tuning around I like it wide. In a QSO I like it Narrow.

Just got a brand new G90 and it receives ok but won't transmit. Tuner seems to work and brings SWR down near 1 but NO XMIT!!! :(
That sucks! I've seen this with my X6100 ‐ in my case, it was a problem with the mic that seems to have stopped happening. Try flipping the cable end for end. It sounds to me like the radio is fine. If you have another Xiegu (or a Xiegu friend), swap mics. Let me know how it goes.
Does this update give the filters a twin passband filter effect?

What about FM mode on CB band? Because this mode NFM in old version with not good quality, I mean small deviation if compare with ordinary CB Radio.

@@okhamradio I finally got the radio plugged in. 29.600 (simplex calling freq was coming in clear, but the volume seemed to be a bit low. It was listenable, but the people on freq couldn't hear me at 20w. Could have just been band conditions though. 40m LSB was noticeably louder.

Plus points:
Filters - they're pretty versatile once you figure out how to navigate them
Waterfall - weaker stations seem more visible on the display
AGC - sounds better than it did before (mostly)
Negatives:
AGC - (eh? You said it was good?). Strong short impulses blast through the AGC at sometimes deafening volumes. It's not fast enough to clamp them down. The NB is useless, as ever.
Waterfall Scaling - As someone pointed out on one of the online groups, the enforced auto scaling makes it difficult to A/B compare antenna noise levels etc. This should be put back to how it was.
AM mode - WTAF? This is pretty spectacular. If there's more than one station on the waterfall, you get to hear them all simultaneously! Pretty trippy and hopefully fixed in the next release as AM used to be decent on this radio.
Ronan, this is par for the course on firmware updates from Xiegu. Fix 5 things, Break 5 other things... I don't get it.

For the BPFs, this now operates like my Icom IC-746 where there is an upper and lower knob adjustment around the center freq for the BPF. It kinda makes sense in that rubric.
But what are we going to do with the old buttons?

For the FT8 i believe previously you would have to change the INPUT (FUNC-POW) to INPUT and select LINE. Can you now leave it on MIC and simply switch to the U-D/L-D? I cant find my usb programming cable to upgrade yet ;D
That's the way it should work now - just select U-D and it should push audio out the rear and mute the mic. I need to dig into that some. I've changed my laptop around and need to re-configure it.
Their description of the update seems more confusing than helpful.
It took me quite a while to figure out what they were "fixing".
Other ‘n the digi mode changes - which, if yer using the new DE19 may be helpful - the latest firmware (as is on my week old G90) is a step back for filter selection & ease of operation. But, asyou sagely noted, we’re all beta testers for Xiegu ;-) 73 de W8IJN

The diagrams showing the filter bandwidth example look like it was lost in the translation from monospaced font. I’d guess if you copy and paste it into courier new or something, it might look better.

First! Thanks for the new info on the update! I am planning on either this or the x6100 as my new hf rig.
The X6100 is a "better" radio, but lower power and will require more skill/patience/cunning. The G90 is a "good" radio and the 20w is great!
@@temporarilyoffline I don't mind a challenge but the waterfall is tempting. My first hf rig was a TenTec Triton IV so a challenge can be fun. I've gotta decide if the 6100 waterfall is $200 more tempting.
@@jtandchelvlogs3709 The waterfall on the 6100 is just a wider version of the waterfall on the G90. If you're a linux tinkerer, the X6100 is a linux computer with a radio attached and that's where the appeal is for the X6100.

In firmware 1.79, the selectivity in Amplitude Modulation was messed up. Try to listen, you will be surprised

@@temporarilyoffline As for AM, it was very good. Now at 1.79, AM is broken. There is an error in the firmware.

For what its worth, I think you missed that the table showed the DEFAULT settings of the filters, meaning before you changed the filter profiles to your liking. That said, I do think that Xiegu should spend more money on proper translations. As for the goofy diagram, copy and paste the document into a text editor and replace the font with a monospaced one and I'd be willing to wager a few donuts that it lines up the way it was intended.
Thanks for the update. I agree the filter information is presented...oddly, and I think the old method either the dedicated buttons made more sense. I feel like I have 2 buttons on my radio that don't work anymore and they don't match the manual.

This is the most amazing G90 firmware to date. If you do not have great results it is because you did not update both units simultaneously.

Exactly! Its a good radio for a starting point. Makes you appreciate the value of better radios when you get them. My first radio was an FT-891 and I thought it was junk... until I used something like the G90 and realized where it lined up in the world. And even now that I've been doing this for a while, I can appreciate 20w on the G90. "The AK-47 of Ham Radio"
