  • Sophie Engelsman was born in 1926 in Rotterdam, Holland. In 1943, the population of the hospital she worked in as a nurse was evacuated to Westerbork Transit Camp. Working as a slave laborer, she survived serious illness in Sobibor, Lublin, Trawniki, Katowice, Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Raguhn. Liberated from Theresienstadt on the brink of death with typhus, Sophie was reunited with surviving family members, and emigrated to Israel in 1949, where she became a midwife. As a midwife, Sophie has delivered all of her 21 grandchildren.

Kudos! I'm so glad you mentioned that film. It was by far one of the most poignant films I have ever seen. I also could not stop crying. Really amazing :)

I second the comment below- this woman is a true diamond. We- people who were born after the WWII, can only learn from these people. Im Dutch, just like this lady- and somehow this little 2 minute film has really got me.
I just want to hug this lady and tell her Thank You for your Story.

I think she was happy to be alive, it just impacted her that she tried so hard to stay alive only to find out that everything that ever meant anything to her was gone. I think it can put some crazy thoughts through your head when something like that happens to you.

omgg you all are so ridiculous! Do you not see the purpose of this video? A holocaust survivor is telling her story and all you guys are doing is sitting here and arguing when you really should just listen and make sure to remember and never forget.

We must all remember the Shoah. Not for some ideological reasons or for Israel, or for some number plays with David Irving and Verbeek and Zündel, but for the memory of those that were murdered by racist hysteria of the Nazis and by pure evil from humans.

The video is a human experience. Palestinians fight because they have no other choice for hope/small millitary power/lack of support from outside world. Their land/olive groves raised to the ground by Israeli's.Read books written by author's who have properly represented how this conflict exists, then you are able to make proper arguments [not newspapers/TV] The Israeli's have have victim psyche, but they are the persecutor's at this moment in time. It is not safe to entrench one's views.
